"Hypothetically, we can certainly have lengthy discussions and even simulate a battle between T-90 and M1A1 "Abrams"."

We don't even use A1's anymore; switched to A1 deltas about 12 years ago, then went with A2 Seps. Seriously doubt Russia is bringing FBCB2 technology to the battlefield. In Persian Gulf 1 the biggest killer of US tanks was other US tanks. That wasn't a big problem in the second go-around.

It very clearly shows that almost all of the local conflicts with the weapons created in the USSR and in the West, from the military point of view, ended in a draw. This means that neither side had significant superiority.

The Syrians in their T-55's and T-62's who faced off with Israelis in British Centurions or WW2 surplus M4 Shermans in the Yom Kippur war might not agree wholly with this statement.

That could be as much of a matter with training and organization as anything. Didn't the Israelis also use captured T-55's and T-62's? How did those units do against their Egyptian / Syrian counterparts?

That's the real key. If Russian T-90s and US M1A2s ever face off, the world has a much bigger problem. In non-world-ending scenarios, the combined arms of the Russian or American forces roll all over whatever unfortunate export market tanks that Chechnya/Iraq/whereever puts on the field. Neither tank does particularly well in urban combat, which seems to be the trend nowadays.

My brother was a tank commander in the guard and swears nothing can touch the M1A1 which I tend to disagree. I like to argue with him that I'd rather be in an A-10 or an Apache than a tin can on the ground just to really piss him off.

When you can take out a tank with a projectile smaller than your little finger, it doesn't matter which tank is better.

One of two Abrams tanks lost in combat was lost this way.

Outlawtsar: I'd have to go with the BatChat 25t...maybe the E-50M in a pinch...depending on how much artillery was on the other team.

My GWP mocks your E-50M. The Bat Chat however scares the poop out of me.

You know, a friend once told me there are no more good cyberpunk/sci-fi novels these days, because we honestly live already in a cyberpunk world.

Why? This is why: We now have oppressive governments controlled by omnipresent corporations. Most of what we eat is no longer grown, we have robots in the battlefield, the internet, world news are available to us as it happens (or minutes/hours after it happens), we have highly-advanced prosthetic limbs, we have technologies that connect us anywhere in the world, and our personal information is in a server room somewhere in the world, owned by either the government, a company, or both.

The only thing we need now, however, is the sex robots.

E50 M is just too big, no camo. Bat is better. Over 2400 efficiency in the 50 M, but it is typical nerfed German garbage. WG made me take a break with the JPE tragedy and the useless 8.0 patch. 263 is beastly.

Tanks are the new fixed fortifications. They used to rule the battlefield with impunity. But now they are too slow, too costly logistically, and not nearly as effective.

2012-09-18 01:47:06 PM
I'd go with the Leopard 2 due to it's all round versatility. That being said MBTs are basically obsolete.

carnifex2005: Aren't tanks irrelevant these days?

Not really, depending on the terrain. The M1 was definitely an intimidating presence in Iraq. Useless in Afghanistan though, as I understand.

That said, I wonder if there's any record on the success (or at least survivability) of the M1 in Iraq vs the T-90's in Chechnya.

canyoneer: Meanwhile...

The Taliban attack against Camp Bastion/ Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan that killed two U.S. Marines and wounded several others was conducted with military like precision. According to the Wall Street Journal, "The coordinated Taliban attack destroyed six Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier jump-jets and "significantly" damaged two others, as well as some hangars, the coalition said. The Taliban also destroyed three refueling stations. Harrier jets cost about $30 million to $40 million dollars apiece - for a total in of anywhere between $180- $240 million dollars in damage..."the single largest biggest single-day loss of U.S. combat aircraft since the Vietnam War."

And you know what we did when the Viet Cong and the NVA attacked our undefended airbases in South Vietnam? We started sending in ground troops to protect our airbases. Maybe we should send ground troops into Afghanistan. That might help.
