Since my expectation right now is that the debate will end with Mitt either crying, using the n-word, or taking a swing at the President, OK, I suppose I'll lower them a bit.

2012-09-18 09:21:07 AM
LOL. yeah run with that, tardmitter. i seem to remember a couple of years ago when obama debated an entire group of republican lawmakers - without a teleprompter - and he handed them their collective asses.

the trouble for romney/ryan is, when you've been living inside the fox echo chamber for so long, when you finally do venture into the outside world of a debate moderated by jim lehrer, for instance, you're going to find that your lies and bullshiat won't fly.

Every candidate tries to lower expectations prior to a debate. That's how it's supposed to be done. It's hedging against a bad night and it makes your guy look better if he does really well.

2012-09-18 09:22:05 AM
So, the skull f*cking of R'moneys corpse is out? Obama will just have to settle for leaving Mittens a bloody, bruised mess whimpering on the stage.

2012-09-18 09:26:56 AM
Remember how awful he did in the 2008 debates? You know, when people were trying to explain away McCain's silly statements and do anything to call them a draw?

I'm sure Mr. "Let's make a 10,000 bet" will do spectacularly.

Came here to say this. And to be specific, he stood in front of a significant chuck of the entire GOP caucus at *their* retreat, open mic, unscripted, and took any and all questions for an hour and a half. My guess would be that he wouldn't be worried about an unscripted debate with Romney.

What? You're dictating my rebuttal?
Look - I experimented sexually in the frat house at college but I don't swing that way any- NO, I won't STFU!!

THIS. Merely the psychological aspect of campaigning.

Or setting up so that when Obama trounces Romney it'll play as "Obama's unexpected trouncing" rather then "Romney's inevitable defeat".

Obama is simply the best orator in politics.

Since my expectation is one of those three happening or Mitt wetting and/or browning himself, should I lower mine as well?

I would really like to see any of those things happening. Call it a morbid fantasy, but it would make for a spectacular, enthralling crash and burn.

Is this thread going to automatically link to the inevitable NRO/Townhall link where Obama is destroyed for failing to use his charisma and oratory skills to soundly destroy Romney?

I like how a headline about how the Obama campaign is trying to lower expectations heading into the debates contains a joke that lowers the expectations for Obama's ability to debate.

2012-09-18 09:50:53 AM
If it's the President, in his last campaign, his last debate, for the last job he'll ever have... if the President shows up, I think it'll be a sight to see, I mean a sight to see.

God Is My Co-Pirate: If it's the President, in his last campaign, his last debate, for the last job he'll ever have... if the President shows up, I think it'll be a sight to see, I mean a sight to see.

At this point I feel like if and only if Romney accidentally lights his podium on fire does the President have a fighting chance

If I had to debate Mitt Rmoney, I'd lower my expectations too.

2012-09-18 10:08:16 AM
If Romney finishes the debate with his $3,500 pants unshat or without screaming "YOU FARKING PEASANT SCUM! I AM YOUR BETTER! YOU WILL BOW DOWN TO ME AS YOUR LORD AND MASTER!" then the Fark Independents will call it a "total victory that has November 6th in the bag."

Bonus - Paul Ryan asks him about the budget and doesn't like his answer. :)

You are ALWAYS supposed to try to lower debate expectations. The fact that your candidate is too stupid to know this and would rather brag about how much he's preparing for it doesn't actually make it more likely for things to end well for him, Tardmitter.

And if I remember correctly, Fox News cut away from it during the middle of the debate because he was making the Republicans look so bad.

With all of Romney's out of touch actions and statements he has put himself in the Palin lane, where winning a debate against him is seen as a given but if he performs even OK it will be considered a victory.

FOX News will declare it a draw if Romney just barely avoids browning himself onstage and only says the N-word once.

Obama should pick a moment to bet Mitt 10K. Preferably the bet should be over some fact that he mangles at the debate and whether it is accurate. Just paint him into a corner into doubling down on a wrong fact and having it fact checked as inaccurate or backpedaling right there at the debate. (It may also get him to double down on the concept of not believing in fact checking). Also the 10K should be donated to a charity of the winner's choice. I think Obama should pick planned parenthood.

If "a few off the cuff remarks" means a blatant lie, insult to American citizens or foreign leaders or just plain scary example of incompetence daily between either Romney or Ryan then subby is correct. But hey, "57 states", amiright?.

2012-09-18 11:20:59 AM
Of course he wants to do that, he doesn't need anyone thinking he's gonna destroy Romney and end up giving Romney the Dubya W for not shiatting his pants.

Obama will wipe the floor with Mitt.  And if he doesn't, Mitt is automatically president and Barack has to try out for Cats on Broadway.

Even if Romney debates to a draw, or (gasp) out-performs Obama... would that even be enough to move the polls?

The polls have been stubbornly stable, and always in Obama's favor.

This is officially Romney's uphill battle. He's looking less like Atlas and more like Sisyphus.

2012-09-18 11:48:19 AM
I just want Obama to make an empty chair joke. I ask for very little, Mr. President.

2012-09-18 11:48:35 AM
Meh, you always lower expectations, especially when you think you can get a big win. If everyone thinks you can get a big win, you HAVE to do it because that's the media story. If you can lower expectations into a fair match, a win becomes worthwhile.

I posted that video on a conservative heavy forum in response to "LOL, Obama needs teleprompter."

Someone responded to my post with: "that video is from Huffington post LOL!" As if that makes the video false. As if that's even an argument. That's how well-trained Republicans are at disregarding any and all information unless it comes from an approved source.

So then I linked to C-SPAN's video - thread died.

What's the over/under on Mitt cancelling the second and third debates after he gets smacked down in the first one?

I think that maybe he's getting a little too confident having his own advisors and staff coddle him as "journalists" on FOX News.

Pretty much. The Baltimore GOP 'summit" (read: Obama handing them their ass on a sliver platter) seems to be a lesson that Republicans can't/don't wish to learn.

I still can't believe anybody is so stupid as to actually believe this teleprompter meme. Isn't it like, the jokey obvious lie that's a joke because it's so obvious? The submitter's trolling, right?

2012-09-18 12:05:00 PM
That's right, subby. Obama's so outclassed Romney might as well just phone it in. His campaign can surely afford to take the debates lightly because teleprompter.
