Community Colleges. It's like high school but nobody has to hide the fact that they smoke.

I think this hinges on whether the pledge really was required, or whether this prof was just promoting her candidate. Don't get me wrong, it's wrong either way, but hardly an outrage if she just said, "By the way, before you leave, take a look at this pledge and some of the candidates running for office. Don't forget to vote!"

Based on what I could find using Google, she's a math professor and had students sign a form she downloaded from gottavote.org. Browsing that site, I can't find any pledge on there about Obama... or any candidate for that matter. I didn't look through the entire site, though, so I could have missed it, but it just appears to be a site for registering to vote more than anything else.

I find that the more a story will probably piss people off, the more likely some important piece of information is missing. It's a good rule of thumb.

Doesn't look like the kids were forced to do anything, but the math instructor was "using class time to urge students to vote for President Barack Obama and for distributing campaign material that says 'I pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.'"

Yea, there are two things that annoy me about this story. The first is that a math professor would use her class time to do anything but teach math. That she may have been using class time to stump for any candidate is illegal, a breach of conduct at a public college or university, and a waste of time. A sentence or two at the end of class like "Remember to vote, your voice is important" is one thing, but anything else is really a waste of time unless you have specifically designed the material to be a teaching instrument (and it being a math class, unless she was talking about polling statistics or something, I'm having a difficult time thinking of a reason to bring it up). Second is that, by all reports I've read, it was a student's parent who complained. Goddammit folks, you're adults now. Quit running to mommy and daddy to take care of you during college.

Why? It's her classroom. If she's tenured, short of violating a student she should be able to conduct the class as she likes. If she's not tenured, she can just not be renewed.
