Yes, but that's going to stay on their big three credit reports for seven years.

'Soviet era debt', like from the 80s and early 90's?

Might as well write it off, they are not going to get it paid back now...

It's good to hear the Soviet government can write this loss off their income taxes to the Soviet government.

I wonder what they get in exchange. Fresh slaves?

A. Q. Khan will have China co-sign any further nuclear purchases.

Probably, yes

If the end-goal is to have North Korea return to some form of modern normalcy, international forgiveness is a necessary prerequisite.

Regime change is more necessary. They could have more money than anyone and it still isn't going to get anyone fed unless they're on Kim's good side.

Considering the slave labor Russia gets, this is a "well, duh" story.

It's not like Best Korea is ever going to have the ability to pay.

Smart move by Russia. They weren't getting that money anyways and in return they get to build an oil/gas pipeline to South Korea.

Or with the way things are going lately, more like from the 2010's.

Because it's Putin, wild animals were involved.

Shortly after that, they were shot and eaten by the North Koreans.

Too far gone. I cannot imagine the size of the capitol investment needed just to bring them up to hellhole 3rd world standards. The debt forgiveness is about the same as me forgiving the 50 I once loaned to my buddy a few years ago before I knew about his massive meth addiction.

Never happen as long as those in power stay there.

It may not be the only thing to do, but it was still the right thing to do from a humanitarian viewpoint.

Also, I would like to see the USA emulate this behavior by forgiving the debt of some of the worlds' poorest nations like Burundi.

Yeah, but you'd make a ton of money eventually. They'd just have to abandon the whole Juche thing.

Nah, if they would kiss and make up with worst Korea and become one country, they'd recover pretty quickly.

Uh...no. It'd just turn SoKo into a more developed shiat hole as people flooded across the DMZ. Hence why, even if the South wanted to curb stomp the Norks massive archaic military, they never would. SoKo can't handle the sudden influx of drain on their resources and social safety nets.
