They created another person with Gallifrean genetics. As I understand it, it takes training to be a Time Lord.. or something like that. Not that she couldn't then be trained...

For that matter, you know that pocket watch that the Doctor and the Master used to become human to hide from those looking for Time Lords? Why couldn't they just use one to turn Donna biologically Gallifrean, to match the Time Lord mind she gained? Start rebuilding the Time Lords and all that.

Tricky. I sort of got the impression that all Gallifeans were 'Time Lord' material, some just better than others. I guess it was the whole 'look into the time vortex and see if you survive and stay sane' bit.

I am just annoyed because the end of that episode made it very clear that she at least had the basic materials to be a Time Lord (she REGENERATES for cripes sake!). Though -- admitedly -- the ... um... repopulation issue would be an awkward discussion....

Part of me still unrealistically hopes that Donna does become a Time Lord someday.

Donna, Rory and Amy, Martha, Rose, Amy. I don't think Jack and River really fit the companion category in the episodes. Their back stories clearly indicate they were more, but I'm just counting what's been shown.

My scale: they knowingly put themselves in harms way to help people / the Dr. Amy and early Rose seemed to stumble into trouble and need rescue or stumble into being useful.

I'm thinking, who says a Time Lord needs to mate with another Time Lord to make new Time Lords? Hybrid theory and all - a viable cross breeding can result in fitter, hardier off-spring. That's why, in dogs, mutts tend to have fewer health problems than purebreds. Just saying...

Captain Jack is truly one of the most interesting characters Dr. Who has ever had. Not even the Doctor is 'immortal' (though we wil have to see how they handle the 12th regeneration issue...).

One of the most important episodes in Dr. Who was (IMO) the David Tennant one where we see WHY the Doctor NEEDS to have companions. Without the moral grounding of a 'little person' (non Time Lord), the Doctor would truly be the greatest threat to all known existence. He would literally have no bounds on his ambitions as he has all of time and space to play with.

River isn't living backwards, they are meeting each other at opposite ends of their relationship. The first time the Doctor met her, in the library, was the last time for her, because she died in that episode. But yeah, it's a bit convoluted and hard to wrap your head around and it's hard to say if the writer's can be consistent with it.

And that astronaut thing didn't make a whole lot of sense either. I thought it was a cheap cop-out the way he fooled them.

I also had the impression, from early River episodes, that the first time she met the Doctor was going to be the last time the Doctor met her, but we've seen that to be false already - they first met technically on Demon's Run, but for the first time after that was in the Nixon episode. Well, unless they add one more, but she was supposedly under the thumb of that one-eyed woman the entire time in between. Next meeting after that (as both timelines go, for once) was the Let's Kill Hitler episode.

Yes, and she played a really good Time Lord for the short time that she was one... but to then make her forget all her travels, all her (mis)adventures with the Doctor. To erase all her knowledge of how important she was. That's just heartbreakingly cruel.

I don't think there is any cosmic force governing their meetings. It could have been a generalization on her part. She made a specific comment once about when he kissed her and it was his first and she said that it would be her last from him.

The first time the Doctor encountered River was her last though. But the second to last for her was obviously not his second. She said in the library that the Doctor came to her just before she went there and gave her the sonic screwdriver. That means her second to last encounter was far enough into their relationship for him to both know what was coming and be willing to hand over the sonic screwdriver.

I've been rewatching the series lately, starting with the 2005 series. I'm coming up on the Pandorica episodes. I've been trying to keep an eye on recurring themes to see if I can pick out more stuff. I've also been watching the most recent ones, it's interesting to note that there is a large gap for the Doctor between this season and last.
