I'm surprised no one's tried to revive the "80s super futuristic intelligent vehicle" genre. Airwolf, Street Hawk, Automan, Knight Rider.... it was a great time to believe in artificial intelligence.

Morrison's run couldn't be done justice in any other medium, but Lemire's absolutely would.

Hmm. This is probably true. Morrison's story can only work on the comic book medium. Put it in moving pictures, remove panels on pages and the whole thing becomes just another superhero show, but with its storytelling fangs removed. Plus it needs Crisis Of Infinite Earths to make complete sense of anyway.

That's the one I was trying to think of. One of the funniest scenes was when the electricity guy found the breaker panel...almost a Bobcat Goldthwait moment.

Handling primates on set is a regulatory pain in the ass. You'd have to make the film someplace overseas and take it the art house route.

If you mock something Hollywood did for long enough, that will be interpreted as "buzz" and they'll do it again.

MANIMAL inspired inexplicable love in a lot of people back in the day.

The thing I remember best about it was the commercial that NBC made that poked fun at DALLAS
(which MANIMAL was programmed up against): they showed a guy in a cowboy hat lounging on a pool
float, talking about how they owned Friday nights, when a sharkfin overturned the raft with a manic
voiceover saying "MANIMAL IS COMING! MANIMAL IS COMING!"

Cutting edge, meta stuff for 1983.

2012-09-18 06:07:26 AM
The thing that I remember, is that "Manimal" carbon-copied some of the plots in "The Wizard", this series about a dwarf toymaker played by David Rappaport.

I especially remember a scene in Manimal, where a kid is traped into a crate that's thrown into the sea. Manimal changes into a shark and burst the crate open. In "The wizard", the dwarf used a toy submarine.

At the risk of posting a threesome, now it's only just a matter of time until we get the silver screen treatment of "The Powers of Matthew Starr".

Or that show with the alien dude with long blond hair who had a magical golden medallion on a chain around his neck , I can't find it on the Googles.

I disagree. Cop Rock is from 1990. It's over 20 years old. They're rebooting movie franchises from 2002. Cop Rock is at the perfect age to be rebooted into something like High School Musical, or Glee.

THIS is actually how you recycle old show ideas. Don't remake a beloved movie that got it right. Take on something that was interesting at its core but executed poorly.

/Also, I thought the guy who played Manimal was hot, and I don't usually go for blonds.

I checked his IMDB and he died fairly young from cancer. Sad.

I loved this show, Voyagers, and Misfits of Science when I was really little. When they were cancelled, I learned to stop watching shows before they make it through 2 seasons.

The Manimal episodes are available for streaming and I'm tempted to watch, but I assume that show truly was crap and I'm better off with the memories.

I was in college when the show was on. It was not great, but the idea was sort of cool. (Plus, eye candy.) My guess is that if you were too look at the shows now, the music would seem really dated, and the special effects would look beyond cheesy. But look at what a reboot of Battlestar Galactica look like.
