8 hours to remove the bottle? One would think the hospital would have a drill of some kind to put a hole in it.

jylcat: Bizarre. How the hell did she do that?

Girl pushed her tongue into the opening just to see how far she could push it. Blood circulation cut off, end of tongue swelled, couldn't pull it out. (Or she was practicing her ATM skills.)

Punching holes in the can to equalize air pressure would do no good at all.

One would think you'd read the article before making a judgment on a situation you have not yet fully grasped.

FTA - Jayla's mom has a warning for parents everywhere who might have bought the same bottles for their kids. "I would tell parents if they have them, discard them," Small said. "Don't let your young children drink from them if they don't know how to use them."

Darwin would suggest having those same children sterilized.

Small says the water bottle was metal with a small opening, but the specific brand of the bottle is not know.

Remember, discard any water bottles that are not known not to be this brand of water bottle.

Oh dear, that poor girl. This could really be a big problem for her. Reperfusion injury is a very serious concern. Honestly, this could be life altering for her. Sadly for me, though, after seeing the photo and reading the subtle innuendoes in the article, I couldn't help but snicker. I am a bad person.

Actually, I wonder how many of the people here don't know that most people can roll their tongue into a tube. Makes it easier to get into this situation.

I must have more tools on the floor of my pickup than all of "maintenance" and the doctors combined.

Let's see, hammer, screwdrivers, sidecutters, tin snips, hacksaw.

Yep. Pretty sure I could have had that off in about 10 minutes...

Now back to AW pics...

No, but finding some way to pressurize the bottle immediately (before all that swelling kicked in) would have done a fine job.

It looks like the only reason it had to get to the point of surgery was because there were so many ham-handed attempts at removal prior.

The tin snips might have worked, but you probably would have caused some major tissue damage and pain. Unless they were very very tiny tin snips.

And, to threaten online is to invite karma into your home, willy-nilly.

mrwknd: 8 hours to remove the bottle? One would think the hospital would have a drill of some kind to put a hole in it.

They did. It didn't work.

FTA...Once she got there, Small said doctors were left baffled. They tried to work on her, punching holes in the can and even calling in maintenance to cut the bottom of the bottle off. But by that time, her tongue had become very swollen inside the container, and the bottle had drifted so far back in her mouth that it was almost at her wisdom teeth. She was let gagging. That's when they took her into surgery.

AHEM!

CSB:

Growing up I went through the braces phase. It didn't last too long, but it wasn't fun, and my mouth seemed to be a pro at finding all the little pokey bits of metal (and there were quite a few). Most of these were annoying but harmless. However there was one god-awful day when my braces managed to pierce the webby stuff that connects my tongue to the bottom of my mouth. My tongue was stuck. I couldn't get it off. And my sister, biatch that she was, decided to do everything she could to make me laugh.

/everything is funnier with pain-induced hysteria
//tongue unstuck itself after about 3-5 minutes.
