Methinks the author just ran through IMBD and found the first 15 names he could find. Not saying all the names on there are awful, but a little more thought could have yielded a much more credible list.

(Affleck is, by far, someone who is far better as a director than I ever thought I'd believe until I'd seen his work. Gone Baby Gone and The Town are terrific. I still can't reconcile that the guy who was in Gigli and the guy who directs some amazing work are the same dood!)

Angelina Jolie is probably not the type of person one pictures when the term "director" gets thrown around, and yet the Oscar-winning actress and internationally-renowned beauty became exactly that with her helming debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey," a romantic drama set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War. Though reviews were far from unanimously positive, several critics praised Jolie for realistically portraying the horrors of the conflict and provoking compelling performances from her cast. The only problem? Not many people actually saw it.

So an actress who has directed one poorly-reviewed, little-seen film is suddenly in a league with Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Kenneth Branagh, Jon Favreau, et al., while Mel Gibson and Rob Reiner didn't make it? Drew Barrymore... WTF? And Denzel might be a great actor, but he doesn't really belong here either.

/Would also add Christopher Guest along with Stallone, Penn, Costner and Robbins.

It works the other way around, too. Not all actors should be behind the camera. Gary Sinise is a perfect example--great actor, HORRIBLE director (just try to sit through Of Mice and Men).

That film was more an ensemble and it helped but according to interviews this was all Emilio's doing, they were trying to cast someone else in Martin's role.

I consider Woody Allen more of a director who occasionally acts, mostly in his own films, akin to Mel Brooks.

I love Woody Allen and Mel Brooks as writers and directors.

put them in front of the camera and I've never seen them as the characters they're supposed to be. I just always see them as Woody Allen and Mel Brooks, and there is a disconnect with the film.
