Are we divorcing our military from its civilian leadership now?

Doesn't Israel's head of defense love Obama? It's just Bibi that is rattling sabers.

One more time you partisan asshats.

A bad relationship with Bibi and Likud is not a bad relationship with Israel.

"Granted, he has a bad relationship with my good friend Netanyahu"

I'm ok with this. The US president shouldn't have more than a cordial relationship with the Likud leadership.

Bibi has really isolated himself here. He really thought he could punk out Obama like a chump.

His "red line" ploy was completely DOA.

That's correct. Bibi made an ass out of himself.

I always laugh when I hear him referred to as Bibi. It's Swahili for "grandmother".

The right wingers in Israel are as bad for their country and the world as our own right wingers here at home. Our President should treat them like any other hostile leaders whose interests conflict with our own...diplomatic ties, but not friendship.

Came here to say this. I thought the Israeli military in general thinks Bibi is a yellow-bellied chickenhawk whose opinion they generally don't entirely respect.

It's almost as if some people are trying anything they can to get the US involved in another war. I don't understand why.

Follow the money. Does Bibi now own any stock in Halliburton? If so, if Romney wins, Iran loses.

Because invading Iran will give us the chance to do what we were trying to do in Iraq but failed at: building a bulwark of democracy in the region which will spread "Freedom" across the Arab world.

The current party in power in Israel is directly descended from the Irgun. An organization that blew up the King David Hotel which was at the time the largest terror attack ever committed (you might want to talk to the Mongols about that record though). They also assassinated the UN representative trying to solve the Middle East problems. They also threatened to wage a terror war in the UK. The British left the Middle East shortly after they were attacked at the King David Hotel.

The Irgun was rejected by most Jewish organizations for its reliance on terror and preemptive strikes against civilians.

Interestingly, the current government gives ribbons to former members of the Irgun and their families.

I could care less what Bibi Netanyahu and his religious zealots want. Whatever it is, it isn't worth thousands of American lives and trillions of American dollars. Bibi can hate all he wants, he just has to put his dick in his hand and wave it around. Not our dick. Not anymore.

Not agreeing with every whim of a foreign, independent country is a "bad relationship"? It sounds more like the U.S. is simply moving to a policy of treating Israel closer the same way it treats any other country. Not sure why that's "bad".

The Right Wing's* on going circle jerk over who loves Israel the most is another issue that is going to become painful to them as demographics change.

Who really focuses on Israel, and that the unconditional support of Israel should be the cornerstone of US foreign policy, some Jews, and premillenial Christians. Religion is the only reason why people support Israel, now they may claim it is because Israel is an ally of America but really can you point me to anyone who isn't Jewish or a fundie Christian who supports Israel?

As America becomes more and more secular the population is going to be looking at the middle East and saying, "why do we always side with Israel?" and "Why don't we just stay the hell out of there"
But the base of the Republican Party, premillenial Christians will still be obssessed with Israel and support of Israel will then be even more important for the purity test. Another feedback loop.

*Pat Buchanan and his ilk excluded.

That belief by neocons - That we need to aggressively depose leaders we dislike and instill our own brand of democracy - is a product of their own peculiar philosophy and simple ragelust:

1. We're divinely the best, everyone who isn't us sucks, and should strive to be more like us. We were chosen to be the best because we deserve it, because the world is completely fair and those that deserve things get them.

2. We're totally secure in that outlook, but just to be sure we should show how totally secure we are in that outlook by farking someone's shiat up and forcing them to become like us, because they totally want to anyways, because we're the best, and totally secure in that fact.

3. Somewhere, some people in a country are going unpunished for their sins. This is a slap in our face, an affront to the idea that divine cosmic law rules our world and upholds our bestness. They MUST BE PUNISHED

4. The best punishment is a harsh deadly physical one, to the utmost of your ability. Anything less implies the world isn't black and white.

Believe it or not, that's actually a lie. It's an intentional lie, one that true neocons know to be false. But they repeat it because it's a Noble Lie; one which is told to rally the populace around a single binding idea. A guy named Leo Strauss came up with it, lifting the concept from Plato's Republic.

I didn't know it at the time, but I spent a couple years at the school (St John's College) where Strauss taught for the last years of his life and did his "best" work.

The GOP's attitude doesn't even win them the support of the majority of US Jews. The GOP's Christian RIght scares most Jews off. They hear phrases like, 'this is a Christian Nation' and they know they're not welcome.

I often wonder how much the Israeli government sweats over the idea of Israel losing its status as the only functional democracy in the region, and thereby losing a good portion of the realpolitik reasons behind the U.S. giving them so much support...

Yeah. One Person, One Vote is so passe. They should get on board with the stratified-sample-of-a-stratified-sample-based-on-gerrymandered-distri cts like in the perfect representational democratic republic we have on this side of the Atlantic.

I liked Bibi fine until he put in an above-ground pool. And had the filter placed away from his house, directly toward mine. Now I listen to a metallic hum 14 hours a day. This is what Bibi thinks it means to be a good neighbor. I asked him, why don't you put an enclosure around that, to stop the noise. And he says to me, noise? What noise? Maybe you should see an ear doctor, I'm concerned that are you are hearing things that aren't there. It might be a brain tumor. And he gives me that half-smile of his.

But let me mow my lawn at 9 AM on a Saturday and there he is, charging across my lawn in a purple dressing gown festooned with yellow frogs, waving his arms and shouting, What, is it today that is Wake the Dead Day? Have I forgotten to mark that on my calendar? Today then is definitely National Wake the Dead Day? Yes? No?

And he gives me that half-smile of his.
