halfof33: There is a great AUTHENTICIrish pub bar in Chicago called Fado.

Their house drink is called an "Irish Car Bomb" and they have the coldest Bud Light in the City.

Lol, I live across the street from the one in Philly. They held auditions for a new Real World there last year. The year before, Sting hung out, had a few pints and watched soccer.

Beerguy: Also, Eulogy Belgian Tavern in Philly is pretty good.

While I feel Monk's has a better beer selection, Eulogy has the best fries in the city. Problem is, I can easily stumble home drunk off me arse from Monk's. For Eulogy, I have to take a bus or cab back.

Been there.

Tit.Or Mr.Wrench, what bar is you're favorite dive bar in San Diego?

Monk's simply points at you and laughs.

There are so many good bars in Philly, I can't even list them. If you live here, you know them and you've drunk in most of them. You also know enough to send tourists to Finnegan's Wake.

Pandora's Litterbox: Dirty Frank's.

Yes, used to live around the corner from there. Stayed the hell out of it to protect my liver.

You beat me to Monk's but Abbaye is my favorite Belgian bar in the city.

The Ould Sod is my home away from home. I also like Live Wire, The Red Fox Room and Bar Pink. If I chose to venture out of the neighborhood I enjoy Churchill's in North County, The Golden Tee in Carlsbad, McPs in Coronado, the Plank in IB. I could name a hundred more.

jackiepaper: I never go to Vegas without getting afternoon drunk at the Double Down. such a great joint. Unpretentious, somewhat dirty bars are the best places to drink.

see also, Lucky 13 and the 540 Club in SF, Johnny's in Huntington Beach, the Volstead in Austin and the Hi-Fi on the Lower East Side.

Love the Lucky 13! But for the true dive action, nothing beats Mr. Bing's. Hemlock is nice too; usually crowded and loud at night, but there's enough room there that the crowds aren't a problem.

downstairs: Dahnkster: 1. Pat O'briens (New Orleans) Great bar. Lot's of room to drink. Great prices. A piano bar that can play or fake any song EVER written. Used to patrons that puke or can't hold their whiskey. A trough for the guys to pee in and a powder room for the ladies. Their specialty drink "The Hurricane' contains 3 shots of rum and liqueur. You WILL get 3 times as farked-up as the March of Dimes.

Please say you're saying this so the tourity types don't visit your local bar.

Would agree with this. Can't stand the endless procession of (really bad/obnoxious) tourists in Pat O's. And, FWIW, there used to be a bar in NO, Port Orleans, that had a "Port Storm Hurricane" - made with 151 rum and Everclear. I made the mistake of ordering two one time. Not sure if it's still there - kind of scared to check.

Thinking about it for just a few minutes, my list, in no particular order:

Flora-Bama - already mentioned multiple times, but my goodness what a great place. You'll never know true silliness until you drunkenly throw a mullet (fish not hair) across a state line while being cheered by a mindless mob.

Buddy's Place, Richmond, VA - as someone who used to live in Richmond's Fan District, there was nothing better than a "snow day" when all the businesses were closed. Locals knew that you had better reserve your booth at Buddy's by 10am or you weren't sitting down the rest of the day.

Bar Raya, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Laguna Nigel, CA - the view of the Pacific is just to die for.

Proud Larry's, Oxford, MS - can probably be exchanged for any traditional college town bar, but this is the one where I got into a martini-drinking challenge with PJ O'Rourke while Mose Allison played live, so it holds a special place in my heart.

The Boom Boom Room, Bannister's Wharf, Newport, RI - I lived through 14 months of hell on a project in Providence, and the Boom Boom Room was a welcome relief every day (yeah, I commuted from Newport to Providence - it was only 40 minutes each way). If he hasn't died by now, I'm guessing old Linc is still holding court at the bar right now and, if so, I doff my cap at thee, good sir.

Honorable Mention:

Piggy's Attache & The ODC (Old Dominion Club?), Richmond, VA - basically the late night spots in Richmond where all the strippers went after work. Piggy's (now out of business) had the added bonus of having a fat, old guy in a barber chair decide whether he'd let you in or not.

Yep.... Cheers..... I remember we had a fart machine. There was a bench out front.
We would take turns sitting on the bench as people walked by and lift our legs

All my favorite bars are in Minneapolis. (I'm not a native, nor have I ever lived or gone to school there.)

The old standby is Nye's Polonaise Room, which is actually two rooms -- one with a piano player who lets you do the singing, and one hosting "The World's Most Dangerous Polka Band."

There are a number of real-deal Irish bars in Minneapolis, the best of which is The Local. Kieran's and Keegan's also get it done.

Right down the street from The Local is Brit's Pub, which is probably my favorite of them all. There's always footie on the TV, lawn bowling on the balcony, and Boddington's on tap.

And I almost forgot the big-ass tiki bar called Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge and Donny Dirk's Zombie Den...

If I go to a bar at all, it's Willy's at St. Pete Beach. It's got all the good parts of a beach bar without being tourist-trap hell or ridiculously expensive. I used to live in the neighborhood, and it's the kind of place where you can walk by, and as soon as the place opens at 8am you'll see the same four or five old farts who have been there every day for just shy of forever sitting at the bar, each nursing a beer and a plate of bacon and eggs. The beer's cheap, the food will stop your heart just looking at it but is cheap and pretty good, and the obnoxious tourists all go to the "real" beach bars and leave Willy's more or less alone for the locals.

Erik_Emune: SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Beerguy: Naja's Place, Redondo Beach, Cali

There's a place for bars like that, but too often they are sort of gimmicky, are out of whatever your first and second choices were, and have terribly kitschy atmosphere..

Naja's should definitely count as a dive - the music is too loud, the furniture is dented and sticky, and the food is made by a very busy guy running a griddle in full view of everybody. The list of beers on tap is kept on a whiteboard over the bar. They just happen to have some insanely delicious beer - and also Bud Lite, if that's what the occasion calls for. They wouldn't know a gimmick if it bit them.

/Lives within walking distance.
//Has had difficulty walking back.

Naja's is lovely and in a marina. Great place to try a new beer or two in the afternoon or at sunset before it gets jammed packed. My second favorite beer spot after The Trappist in Oakland.

Probably my most frequented bar is JJ Bittings in Woodbridge NJ. It's in the old train station and they make their own beer which ranges from pretty good to fantastic. A lot of families eat there but the bar area is great. See a lot of buds from our high school years. They're actually hosting the Woodbridge NJ beerfest this Saturday. Missed the last 3 years - not this year, daggummit!

Right down the road is the Main Tavern, which is truly a dive. I've only been a few times but my friend has been drinking there since he was like 15 (the bartender wasn't too happy when he went in on his 21st). But, man, he has some ridiculous stories from his days there. Must go more often. Cheap.

Another friend lives near this other dive in North Arlington, the Coppermine. They always have a great rotating cast of beers (I just missed the 120 minute on tap), friendly owner and you can yap on for days about good beer. They have brewery tasting days and home-brew nights, too.

The Zeppelin beer garden in Jersey City is pretty fun. The Ginger Man in NYC is a little pricey and usually crowded but has one of the best beer menus in town.
