You know what sucks n a personal level about this? I have always wanted to go to Russia. I wanted to see the Red Square, see what's left of the palace in St. Petersburg, and just generally see the history of what I always fond to be a fascinating land. I was planning a trip for early next year with a couple friends for Moscow and a few other places.

But with the Republicans trying to ignite the cold war and Putin going all KGB on us, I don't think it's a great idea right now. Freaking politicians have to ruin everything.

/oh, yeah, and the whole "possible nuclear war" thing sucks too.

Do these people in the press ACTUALLY believe that an apologetic statement doesn't count unless it literally contains the word "apology"??

I live in Russia. And in the real world, not the republican derp world, visas now have less requirements and are for a longer period of time, which shows some level of recent co-operation and good relations between the countries. Russians actually know that Mitt Romney is a 'tard, and I've never had a problem being American, beyond the random drunken asshole or two. But that is rare

SkinnyHead: mrshowrules: This. Why did Obama approve the Iranian nuclear program? Surely a nuclear Iran is a bad idea.

Why did the Obama Administration underestimate the threat posed by Iran? That's the better question. They scrapped the missile defense plan because they thought that Iran did not pose a threat. And also to appease the Russians. Now we learn that Iran may be only 3 years away from developing an ICBM that can even hit America. But never mind that, Liz Cheney said Czechoslovakia.

Iran has been TOTALLY JUST ABOUT TO GET A SUPERWEAPON THAT CAN BLOW UP ALL THE THINGS, GUYS for decades. And we just got out of an idiotic war in the Middle East based on Conservatives claiming that the leader had nonexistent WMDs, so forgive us if we're not buying the propaganda this time.

Bibi 1995: "The best estimates at this time place Iran between three and fve years away from possessing the prerequisites required for the independent production of nuclear weapons. After this time, the Iranian Islamic republic will have the ability to construct atomic weapons without the importation of materials or technology from abroad."

St. Petersburg and Moscow are wonderful cities to visit, really some of the best ones in the world. But don't go without someone who knows what they're doing, or a tour company.
I used to go to both regularly, but the Putin regime is like the bad old days. Sometimes it's not you, it's them.

Because they ran into you?

I'm just saying, I've visited Prague and felt more welcome there than any other part of Europe. I can't speak for the rest of Central Europe except Sophia Bulgaria, But even central Europe were some how pissed about the US not putting missiles in their country, which they're not, they still wouldn't take it out on US tourists.

It seems that a number of policy makers either think it's still 1988, or wish it was 1988, because they totally figured out how to win the Cold War after playing Risk for a few years.

Solution: have a separate office called President of the Totally 80s, and let people run for that. They can talk all they want about the Soviets and mutually assured destruction and Twisted Sister using the H-word. No elections, no advertising: the office goes to whoever can solve a Rubik's cube first.

The POT80S can spend his term visiting countries like Czechoslovakia and East Germany, and take little kids to see E.T.

Maybe, but I seem to recall that the anti-missile systems have always had a pretty low accuracy when tested. They might be somewhat better at defending against drones, but as the drones get smarter, I imagine they'll be able to counter any static defenses in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Granted, with today's technology you won't see e.g. a coordinated squadron of drones where a few dive-bomb any ground-based defenses, others engage and shoot down any enemy aircraft that show up, and the rest deliver bombs and/or missiles to the desired target(s), but you can be sure that the military is working on that sort of thing right now.

The bigger problem with anti-missile defense systems, especially for ICBMs, is that they're on the losing end of the arms race equation - it's cheaper and easier to develop a countermeasure to a given missile defense than it is to develop the missile defense itself, and there's no indication that would ever change.

Because it's a billion dollar handout to defense contractors.

The missile gap was a myth created by those same defense contractors to get America to build up its military to unGodly proportions. And to this day the buildup continues, and any real talk of cutting back on spending and numbers is met with calls of treason.

That would make sense if the system being installed was meant to stop Russian nukes. It wasn't, nor would it be terribly useful in such a scenario. The Russians even know this.

And, no offense to you, seriously, but why the hell should the U.S.A. be building missile defense systems in other countries to begin with? Even if 100% of the Czech people wanted the system, if the purpose is to protect the Czech's from some nebulous threat they feel from their neighbors, let them build their own damn missile defense system, if it's so damn important to them. If they can't live without one, I'm sure they'd find a way to get one.

You have to understand how missile defense works. Don't think of it as Missile Command where you're hitting them as they descend. You have to intercept them way, way earlier, and to do that, you have to be close enough. If you have a boost-phase interceptor, you can't put them in the US.

That's more what I'm worried about. Even here in the "Melting Pot of the World," people sometimes get beat down for looking different in times of national stress. And, since national stress is something politicians love to stir up to get everyone riled to their cause...

I mean, I know that the governments themselves won't do much and risk an international incident. Random person on the street who has heard all their lives how evil I am? Well, I've learned to not underestimate the stupidity of anyone of any nation.
