Not to threadjack, but if I had my choice of cars, I'd pick the custom built Lincoln Continental Mark III modified for the movie "The Car" from 1977. I'd drive around in that with heavy-tinted windows and scare the shiat out of people.

Still, that Packard is nice, I suppose.

Gotta give her credit, she looks better at 102 than Lohan does entering her 30s. And you might hit that because really if you can get that fortune, it might be worth the few years of sacrifice.

Based on the front end...none. Those kind of headlights aren't easy to replace.

My great aunt died a millionaire at age 100. Probably just saved every penny her whole life, and cashing in on gov cheques until the end of time.

She got her licence at 12?

2012-09-16 05:03:04 PM
Obviously the problem here is that her taxes aren't high enough. She's depriving a younger generation of gainful employment by refusing to purchase a new car, or to take her car to a mechanic. Plus, she's poisoning the environment with her vehicle's emissions, which certainly exceed air quality standards.

Dunning never married. She enrolled at the University of Michigan, but dropped out during the Depression to help at her mom's real estate company.

Later, she was a success in banking and retail.

After her mother died in 1957, Dunning built a library for the town in her honor. She also has given more than $1 million to the Plymouth Historical Museum.

She's the 1%.

She looks pretty good for 102, and was a success in banking... not coincidentally, never married. Think about it: no guy to interrupt her beauty sleep, insist they needed a new car and new video games every year, or while that she should make sandwiches while she was pursuing a career.

;-)

Google Ms. Dunning, boys and girls. Nice as the article is, it doesn't cover even a fraction of her life. She represents a style, elegance, grace, and class that is not much in evidence in younger generations - my own included, unfortunately. Back in her day, there were many like her, including many of very modest means.  She is the epitome of the grand lady.

Heh... right on. :)

As to the lady in the article... she redefines and clarifies the definition of 'awesome'. Like Garf said: "she is the 1%. The 1% that the other 99% of 1%ers should aspire to become." And that's exactly right.

Yes - the circumstances are explained in the article. Short version is that her dad died, Mom didn't drive, so the family used their political connections to get the 12-year old daughter a license.

FWIW... I took my driving test at age 13 with a DPS officer, then had to wait 2 weeks until I turned 14 before they filed the paperwork for my license because my signature wasn't 'valid' until I was 14.

Scored a 87 out of 100, with 10 points being deducted the second I shifted into gear for not wearing a seat belt. My vehicle didn't have seat belts from the factory and seat belts were no where near required by law at the time, but the officer said that seat belts were mandatory during his driving tests. I didn't have the stones to ask why he wasn't wearing one, either.

I'd say boy toy. And in this case I'd actually be young enough to qualify.... but
102 and never married, you and me may be swinging from the wrong side of the plate if you know what I mean.

There are mentions somewhere that her mother was politically connected. However, back when she got her license, there were no age restrictions on it, only the ability to drive. You must also remember that there were a lot fewer vehicles on the road, there were no freeways, there was no rush hour - driving was a lot easier.

I grew up in a very remote area and got my license at 14 - by which time I had been driving for a few years out on the backroads, driving trucks, tractors, pickups, combines and such. The traffic congestion was such that the cop administering my driving test had me stop in the middle of the street in town while he got out, went into the barbershop and had a couple fellows move their cars so that I could demonstrate my proficiency at parallel parking. It was not to move them apart, but to actually have them close enough that I couldn't just coast in to the parking space. During harvest, I could drive from field to farm all day - sometimes several miles - and never see another vehicle. Even hauling stuff into town 20 miles away, I might see 2 or 3 vehicles on the highway. States were a lot more lenient about who got a license under those conditions. I'd bet that's how she was able to get hers at 12 back in the early 1920s.

I have an old car myself and have toured several times with Ms. Dunning and her Packard. Wonderful lady, beautiful car. On the last one she was riding and her son or grandson or some other younger dude was driving the car, but she was great to talk to, very enthusiastic, and a lot of fun. Her passion for the old car is genuine, and it really is a very nice specimen of a very desirable Packard 740 Custom roadster. Not over-restored or a trailer queen, but she's quite fussy about keeping it tidy and it looks fantastic. In fact, I just saw it today at the Glenmoor Gathering in Canton (an awesome show, by the way).

So there's that.

Didn't read the article but, quite possibly. Laws governing drivers licenses were greatly varied in the early 1900s. Places like South Dakota didn't enact laws until like the 1950s
