I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I would fake cancer to have the make a wish thingy let me spend a day with that. After it was revealed that I didn't have cancer, I wouldn't care, no regrets. I got to play with that thing and it was worth it.

We're going to need a better plan for these endangered species, with such small populations and no serious chance of habitat rehabilitation (in most cases) a lot of these programs are expensive hanging on to something that'll never happen.

Over the past decade I've gotten to play with five or six tiger kittens, three leopard cubs, two panthers, and a lion. It is at least 100% as cool as everyone imagines. If the opportunity ever presents itself, you should go through whatever it takes to do it.
There is a small trade-off sometimes, however, in that when they're really small, they're incredibly cute -- and not really interactive. When they get up to 15-20 lbs, they are a ton of fun, but you have to realize that you ARE going to get bitten. A bit. I've posted quite a few pictures in Caturday threads of my family playing with cats over the years, and most of the pictures are of the wife, daughter, or son being pounced.

One important note: if you're allergic to cats, you may be dangerously allergic to tigers. Mrs. love zombie always has to load up on Benadryl before we go play. One time she had to go to the Acute Care place for a shot and a breathing treatment, she got so wheezy. The doc asked her why she would put herself in that amount of danger. She said, "um, wouldn't YOU?" He thought for a second and agreed that yes, he would.

You do realize a lot of those places kill or dump the babies once they're over a certain age/weight, right?

Treat a dog badly and it'll still run up to you with its tail wagging. Happy to see you.

Treat a cat badly and they will never forget it.

aawww that pic totally is. CSB indeed. Yeah, I think when they're big enough to run with you, or perhaps swoop your leg out so you trip and it pounces on you, and you just roll with it. When you say 'before we go play', do you know someone with all these big cats? I don't know how I'd be able to arrange any kind of meeting with a big cat that would be legal.

This one is more the "rescuer" than the "dumper". At least half of the ones I've played with were found in horrible conditions at roadside stands, or being kept by people without any clue (or the legal ability) to keep them. My friend has taken them in, or found other license holders who could appropriately care for them. She's not a breeder.

In my state (Florida), if you have a Class 1 license you can keep big cats, and other people are able to interact with them (with the licenseholder present) up until the cat reaches 40 pounds, at which point they're no-touch from then on.

Most states don't allow private homes to keep big cats. Florida is an exception. However, to own a Class 1 animal license, the first thing you have to do is work/intern for 1000 hours with a place that already keeps them. After your thousand hours of training, THEN you can work on the tens of thousands of dollars it takes to create the enclosure that will pass inspection. Personally, I wouldn't even consider it. My friend literally has not had a vacation in eleven years, because you can't just ask the neighbors to take care of the 500 lb. tiger in the backyard. I'm incredibly fortunate that they do it and that they sometimes have babies that I can crawl around with. Speaking of which, I haven't had a kitty fix in about a year. Gotta email her and see how she's doing.

Back in the 90s I worked on a syndicated show. One day they brought in 2 tiger cubs. Due to the zoo's policy only the official handlers could be seen holding and interacting with them on set. But behind the stage they set up a baby playpen and we could go pet and play as well. As I remember they were just as soft as a regular house cat.

i, for one, am glad he didn't use it.

I have nothing against memes, per se, or even that one specifically, I just think we rely on them a bit too often. Creativity should still be encouraged on some level, right? No? Fark it, nevermind.

/Very cute tiger, by the way.

Am I the only one who noticed the article mentioned a contest to name the little ball of fur?
Might I suggest that we use the power of Fark to railroad those zoo keepers into naming the little kitty either "Drew," "Curtis," or "Fark?"

Not a problem. They can just lay on my chest and snore for hours, I don't care. Just want to hug them FOREVER.

FTA: The cub was born Aug. 22, and the zoo is inviting the public to help choose a name online.

This text is now purple: It's weird how little cats differ despite marked size differences.

Evidently the feline form factor has been optimized for predation and carnivory, so when they scale up or down all that needs to change are cube-square differences in heat retention and physical mass.
