"Larry spends his days greeting guests to the house, inspecting security defences and testing antique furniture for napping quality. His day to day responsibilities also include contemplating a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house," says the website of the PM's official residence.

It sounds like the cat already had a busy schedule. Just because he did't KILL the mice does not mean that he did not try to accomplish a peaceful solution. I give a big "Fark you in the ass" to whoever fired the cat!!

One of mine brought me a still-buzzing locust the other day.

"says the daily mail"

So is this the 8th greenlight on the main page alone from the daily fail?

So weird how the place gets flooded with his tabloid bs every single weekend. Someone's making a ton of money from planted stories..

They must be feeding him too well. Starved cats kill mice.

Uh, Mr. Prime Minister? Cats work on their own schedule. Just because you want them to do something doesn't mean they will.

In fact, the more you want them to do something, the more they won't do it, just to be spiteful.

Is he getting rid of the cat or just getting an additional one?

Meanwhile, the Loyal Opposition is congratulating the PM on his new-found commitment to government downsizing.

But why does it use chopsticks to catch mice with?

This guy's semi-retired now, but I'll bet he can hack it.

Yes, but you see, the British government are very bureaucratically-minded, and that sort of cat attitude ("cattitude", if you will) is inconsistent with both the Home Civil Service by whom Larry was employed and the elected government whom Larry served.

No retirement CB or CBE for you, Larry. Not yours. No can haz.

Wondering the same thing. It sounds like the kitty is very accustomed to his environment. I'd hate to think they'd get rid of it and force it to find a new family, just because there are no more mousies to catch.

Wrong, actually.

A well-fed cat is more patient, and therefore a more effective hunter.

A cat who is actually hungry is more likely to raid neighborhood trash cans.

My unit had a mouser when I was in the U.S. Army. One day, she wandered into our nearly fifty-year-old "temporary" warehouse building that had been long renovated into offices (poorly) and promptly took care of our rodent & pigeon infestation. We got her set up as a military working animal so as to get her shots. She was very heavily pregnant when I saw her chase down and kill a rabbit. She would make bird calls to attract the pigeons.

"Potting"? - must always be hungry, then.

Waiting by the cellar door.
Window-box town crier;
Birth and death registrar.
With claws that rake a furrow red ---
Licensed to multilate.
From warm milk on a lazy day
To dawn patrol on hungry hate.
...No, the mouse police never sleeps ---
