He would be better served publishing pamphlets that people can hand out to homeless people exhorting them to bootstrap themselves to success.

No, he had a stroke about 15 years ago, but he recovered (mostly) and trundles on. I believe his wife (Michael's mom) is still alive as well.

CSB - met him ~20 years ago when i worked in a bookstore and he was on tour for one of his books. Very very sweet man. Also, if he'd played a hobbit, Peter Jackson wouldn't have had to do much camera trickery to make him seem small.

/took my copy of criterion collection Spartacus laserdisc for him to sign. His handlers biatched me out cuz "he was just there to sign his book". He took me aside and we talked about the movie for 10 minutes. Still have that signed LD

I watch Saturn 3 more often than Spartacus. Spartacus is a much better film. But honestly, would you rather be a slave gladiator fighting a hopeless revolt in a brutal world of dirt and blood, or living on your own private moon base with robots to do all the work while you pop synthetic drugs with a young Farrah Fawcett who thinks you're the only man the world because you are?

I didn't know that. Also, I was incorrect: Anne Douglas is the mother of his younger sons but not of Michael. They married in 1954, which means they're coming up on their 60th anniversary.

I'm really sick of seeing sexist old men being hailed as heroes for maintaining their antiquated sexist beliefs.

I thought women wanted equality? What is equal about earmarking funds specifically for homeless women? Because they are weaker, more frail, more needy than homeless men....obviously. Women are weak and need help.

That's what this guy and this charity are all about. The opposite of equality. Even with the best of intentions this stuff, these beliefs, are what made the sexism we see in our past (and even today) possible. Any stereotypical man from the 1950s would tell you that women can't do job X because they are too weak. They need a man to help them. They need more help than men. They are weak and need men to support them.

If you want to help the HOMELESS - go for it....but there is no need to put down an entire gender by selective supporting the poor, weak women.

Yes - it's far easier to dismiss someone as a troll than to address the points they raise.

Promoting charities/donating to charities that prioritize one gender over another violates the notion of gender equality. If we're going to pay lipservice to the idea that women are just as capable as men; we need to stop prioritizing women in need over men in need. It can't go both ways.

This is not a troll, this is basic logical reasoning.

If Kirk Douglas went on record saying, 'Women are weaker than men, so I think us guys should help them out' he'd be branded a sexist pig. His 10 million dollars is saying exactly that...he's support an organization that exists to help WOMEN because WOMEN need help. And because people are stupid - they see this as a heroic thing, while at the same time, condemning the concepts his money and actions are supporting.

You seriously can't think of any unique issues that homeless women face?

I'ma go out on a limb and say homeless women get raped more often than homeless men.

I'm going to make an even more disputable claim and say they get pregnant at a higher rate than homeless men.

Women have a greater likelihood of being abused/beaten by their husbands/partners, who also hold the deeds/leases on their home and are the sole breadwinner.

So when the man gets tired of them and throws them out into the street, or they work up the courage to run away, they have no place to go. If they have small children, then they stand no chance of finding full-time work.

None of this is "sexism"; it's statistics.

It's why organizations like People's Emergency Center here in Philly were founded.

Read this document: The Health of Homeless Women

Homeless women are more likely to suffer assaults and sexually transmitted diseases. Also 90% of homeless families have a female head.

Women are different and do need services specific to them. Do I think that means we need to go back into the kitchen and make you a sandwich? No.

He donated money ($3 Million+) for the restoration of a playground and improvements to school buildings to a public school in LA. The school where a couple of his kids had attended.

I know because the construction work was completely shortly before my son began attending the school. The list of things he has donated money for is a long and varied one, from what I understand.
