it's about hope in the face of impossible odds, of finding the inner source to continue on in spite of being overwhelmed. It's more personal and human than the generic pastoral banality of the first stanza of America the Beautiful, and it's less religious and 'We are the Chosen!' than God Bless America.

Yay! It's there!

We don't.

Also, it's still better than "O' Canada".

The tune is a drinking song, only now it's sung at venues where alcohol is sold to increase consumption solely because of how it's sung.

Hey, they may have burned our capital to the ground for our invasion of Canada built upon the flimsiest of premises, but we didn't let them burn a second city down!

But that doesn't sound as patriotic, does it?

/I also want to slap people who can't keep it in 3/4 time

Just replace it with "America the Beautiful" already. Though maybe not the whole song, it's a little too long.

Here's what's making Frances spin: The reason Barack Obama, a Kenyan who hates America, HAD to be president (and I've always wondered that, and just figured it out last night), is because only a foreigner who hates the United States would stand down while we are attacked.

This country is about to be attacked by Russia/China/whomever. This has been in the works for an extremely long time. It's part of a grand design to remake our country and the world into something more to the liking of the individuals in the Carlyle Group, the Trilateral Commission, the Rothchilds, and everyone else who was involved in carrying out, among other things, the 911 attacks.

Some cities which may be hit by ICBMs: San Diego, Seattle, New York City, Orlando, and Dallas, and probably others.

Please pray to God to have mercy on us, to forgive us for our past transgressions. Make sure you're living a clean life. Pray for yourself and for your family, friends, and neighbors. This is a time of reckoning. While you're at it, pray for Obama and his family. He and the other people involved in this know not what they do.

And only the first stanza is sung in public. The third stanza is horrible, calling most of the US population "hirelings and slaves."

I find it annoying as hell when someone does a shoo-bee-doo-whaaa version of our country's national anthem. Look, you're not singing "Never gonna give you up" and nobody is impressed by your vocal range and improvisational style. This is the national anthem and it's sung in a predictable, boring way. So show some farking respect and do it right or don't do it at all.

I hate that damn song. Figures though, that we'd have a national anthem that is highly symbolic, but brings no one together. As long as we can get that flag-waving shiat in there, who cares if everyone trying to sing it is standing there frowning, just waiting for it to end?

And "early light" is a secondary dominant leading to a dominant, not a subdominant leading to a dominant. How the hell do professional, music-reading, chord-progression-knowing singers get that wrong so often?

ExperianScaresCthulhu: and it's less religious and 'We are the Chosen!' than God Bless America.

The first verse, maybe...

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Never make not of how someone isn't butchering the song until they walk away from the mic.

Queen Latifa actually had a decent version on the NFL opener, right up until the very end when it went to Rosanne level terrible.

It was a matter of it not being replaced with a white one or a British one, not the fact that the flagpole was intact.

Let me look that up.... ah, the Solid Gold/Cry Freedom version ... how did she fk up the ending though? that was just a church/broadway ending, it wasn't even a very bombastic version of church/broadway. she knew all the words in that pre-recorded version.

I say all this, knowing damned well if she'd done it in reggaeton I would have thrown my headphones across the room.

I love it when some American Idol fourteenth-place finisher really tries to make it his/her own. They change the tempo, shriek on the high notes and drag out the last verse for over 30 seconds. Because it's not the country's song, for the next five minutes it's gonna be YOUR song, dammit!

Did I say "love"? I meant "hate".

ya know, i've put up with reading a lot of shiat from you assclowns on Fark for years but the anti-american sentiment in threads like this piss me the fark off. I learned a while ago to ignore the politics tab but recently I've learned to just ignore this site all together. Peace out farkers

also, I like the last verse the best:

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

The first stanza is a question.

There's no other country in the world with a national anthem, the words to which are in the interrogative form.

I've always thought about that.

The reason why its song like that is because you let them do it. Its your fault.

If you want it sung properly sing it yourself. If they are enough of you it will drown out the vacuous warble.

It's also an unsingable melody (regardless of the words). Even professional singers routinely fark it up. We need a National Anthem that doesn't require 20 years of voice training to sing.

You've got a point. At the next Super Bowl, the crowd should sing it as it's meant to be sung. Of course, this would totally mess up the solo singer's lip-synching.

Could this be a thing?

It's a great anthem. It is not unsingable for a singer (an octave and a half), Is uplifting and noble, moves along smartly when sung correctly, and is about the thrill of knowing your flag has not been captured and replaced - not about about hitting the flagpole, ffs. It is more celebratory than O Canada, which I love; the latter being more akin to a United Church hymn - pleasant, reverent, well-behaved and not too hard to sing.
