I don't have a team to watch here in Seattle. Some Canucks games here and there, but I don't like the Canucks. I like the Blackhawks but only see the nationally televised rarities. If we had a team to watch on a regular basis I'd be following for sure.

We've got pro soccer finally on the national scale, and although highly successful it bores the ever loving shiat outta me. I've tried and tried, even with EPL and the other big leagues. That sport will never do anything for me. But, good for the scarf wearing weenies who finally get a sport of their own to get drunk for.

Football is king for me, but I really like NHL. I think we'll get a team as the new stadium deal is progressing again. The whole thing, though, is about getting NBA back to Seattle first and foremost. I don't give a shiat about NBA. I'd rather watch a rugby match where I don't fully understand the rules than a basketball game.

This sucks. Two years ago I moved from a hockey desert (Topeka Roadrunners and that's it, no NHL team on local TV), to a place where I can see 4 NHL teams regularly (Sabres/Rangers/Islanders/Devils), and I've been loving it. I truly hope they can get this worked out quickly.

If not, go Syracuse Crunch!

Damn It! Hockey was just starting to recover from the damage done during the last strike and gain popularity again. It seems like Bettman is on a mission to kill the sport, not help it. Pay the players and try to get some better TV contracts.

Enough already. As a fan, I am sick of this. You guys do remember us fans, right? We are the ones paying for $20 parking and $12 beers?

Just wanted to remind the owners that without fans, all they own is the rights to some nice logos and a lease to an arena somewhere. I guess you guys could have bead shows-or maybe RV/Camper Expos.

And players- without fans you are just a bunch of overpriced figure skaters wearing the same color shirts.

Just a minor point, George Gilliette sold the Habs a few years ago. But other than that I agree with you.

Fark Bell and Rogers for buying MSLE, you farkers deserve what you got yourself into, a failed MLS team, a dismal basketball team and no leafs on tv for a long time. May your revenues drop like the Leafs playoff chances in March.

And $60+ monthly cable/satellite bills to watch our local team on whatever network they have and national games on NHL & NBCS, which are only available on the higher tier services.

Eh. If this leads to any loss of regular season games, there will be trouble for the NHL. If this leads to another lost season, might as well stick a fork in the league, as I'm not sure that Canadians will be coming back next winter in the kind of numbers that the league needs to survive.

Ironically, I'm betting that the second tier US franchises (Columbus, Nashville, Tampa, Florida, Phoenix, etc.) will be affected the least in terms of fan support. They've got fanbases that are fairly modest and casual, so it's possible that they might not take much notice of the lockout. "Let's go to a hockey game!" "We haven't done that in a few years, good idea! Why haven't we gone in two years?" "I don't remember seeing any family deals for seats last year, but the (insert other pro team in the area) had a bunch."

/Isn't put out by this, even though is a big Senators fan
//Owners are going to have to get their shiat together before they have any credibility. Even if the player asks for a 14yr/101 million dollar contract, front loaded, doesn't mean that the owners have to agree to it. Even worse when they're the ones making the offers...
///No sympathy for the owners at all. In any way. No sympathy whatsoever. They're bringing this upon themselves.

2012-09-16 09:47:58 AM
Bettman needs to get his head out of his arse. The owners were / are still signing contracts and extensions. So are these all now null & void? If the owners are so bothered about the huge contracts they are signing then don't sign them.

I have a proposal for them: 45% revenues to each side the left over 10% goes to the weaker market teams as part of the revenue sharing.

Leave the FA alone.

2012-09-16 10:33:58 AM
Surprised how much people are putting this squarely on the owners, when the players refused to start negotiations until the end of the season and took pretty much an entire month to offer their first proposal.

Bettman has never wavered from the stance of Sept 15 is the deal deadline.

Not to mention the fact that they hired Fehr, and all he's done is stall and try to play the same "we'll play without a contract in place card" that killed a baseball season mid season.

The players are just as in the wrong in this one as the rich team owners are.

2012-09-16 10:34:15 AM
The players should float a proposal for a rival major hockey league. Scrap the current owners, let them cry with their burned fields they set afire themselves.

Cap it off by saying that Bettman is the major cause of it all and no further discussions will be held as long as he is a part of the NHL in any capacity.

It's time for the players to play hardball with that idiot.

Incorrect. The strike happened in April 1992, when John Ziegler was NHL President.

Bettman wasn't hired as Commissioner until late in 1992, and didn't start until February 1993.

Three work stoppages is bad enough. No need to attribute to him ones that belonged to the previous regime.

The last NHL lockout wasn't a mistake. Where MLB saw their business decline significantly for a couple of years, the NHL came back to increased fan enthusiasm and increased revenues. So, a lost season was good for business.

That, however, was then. Whereas most fans saw that lockout as a necessary evil, nowadays I can't find anyone who has any sympathy for either side. The attitude I'm coming across from hardcore fans is that people will just go to WHL games for their hockey fix. Hockey fans that I'm talking to just don't care this time.

When the NHL resumes I don't think they'll experience an MLB-like decline, but I don't think they'll get the bump or the near-universal forgiveness both sides are expecting. No one in hockey cares about the fans and I think many fans are finding it tough to care about the NHL.

Indeed, there's not a whole lot of ice here in KY in the deepest winter let alone hockey in it's natural state. IF it's below 20 degrees F for 2 weeks (3 preferably) the tiny (30' diameter) pond in my backyard freezes hard enough that we can go out on it & play our annual game of broomball/hockey. This condition tends to last at most about 3-4 days so the most has to be made of it. However it is "hockey" at home & it is wonderful. Around here you have to make the best of whatever you've got.

More on point, the closest NHL team (CBJ) is 2+ hours away & even if it were possible to easily break away to get to a game, there's nobody around here to go with. There is a couple of high school teams north of town but that's still an hour away. There is a halfway decent ECHL level team somewhat closer but their & my schedules rarely seem to mesh. It's a hockey wasteland here, Fark & other online places to chat combined with streamed games are my salvation. Well, I've got the WHL (go Royals!) where I can actually afford to go to the games, and I can usually pick up the NLL lacrosse games on the net. Should keep me entertained for the winter.

As much as I love the sport, I really wouldn't mind watching this league simply implode. Owners need to grasp the idea that they are not what puts asses in seats. And they need to learn that if they're going to cry poverty and hope to be taken even remotely seriously, then turning around and offering absurdly long, absurdly expensive contracts to players isn't helping their case. (see Weber, Parise, Suter)

So really, fark you. There are other leagues to watch.

2012-09-16 02:26:51 PM
I don't know why I'm here right now, but I'll post one anyway. I am disgusted with the idea of players going to Europe/Russia to play and take jobs away from players that make their living over there. It's not like the bottom tiered guys over there are making huge dollars. They're making a living, the best way they know how. It's hypocritical for these players to go over there and do that. Every time, I see an NHL player do that, it tells me that they're nothing more then mercenaries. They'll go anywhere, for a few dollars and to hell with the little guy that needs to eat.

So this isn't just the Owners. The players claim they 'just want to play'. No, they just want to make money. And F*ck over other people who are doing their jobs - playing hockey in Europe and Russia.

Sad state of affairs. The NHLPA officially screwed themselves by choosing Fehr. Dude's a cockmuncher of epic proportions. Bettman is just a wonkpiece for the owners as it is, so I don't understand the hate.

I don't think they are, from what I read the tickets will be the same price as they were at the Civic Centre, and parking will be 30% less than for the Sens games.

Will be nice to have a more affordable option for hockey regardless out here.

A Fark Handle: how much is mls paying the nhl to commit suicide?

I'm a huge Red Wings fan (growing up in the Detroit area, had season tix etc.) and I've followed them pretty religiously after I moved away for work years ago. But now I'm in Portland, no NHL and a MLS team that is so much fun to watch. Sure the Timbers are in the basement in standings but I predict MLS will eclipse NHL in size and popularity in the next 10 years. This lockout means I won't buy center ice, won't follow except for causal status from now on. They've ruined it for me. Good jorb!

Agreed. MLS screwed themselves out of ever becoming a world class soccer league when they decided to try and adapt a North American sports league franchise model/salary cap. Even with the exemption, world class players in their primes aren't going to be lining up to play in a league that plays in a football vacuum and is almost certain career suicide.

The best thing the fans can do is take a season off. Don't buy tickets, don't buy merchandise. Remind the millionnaires and billionnaires that we're what make the league financially viable, and that they're our biatches and not to forget that!

I completely disagree.

MLS was never going to be able to compete with the European leagues for world class players. In the grand scheme of the soccer world, MLS is and is always going to be a minor league, like the Brazilian league or the Mexican league.

By having a North American sports league franchise model/salary cap, MLS has parity between the teams, which means fans of small market teams don't have to temper their expectations before the first game of the season is played. This has allowed MLS to expand their fanbase all over North America, and is growing the league from the ground up.

If you going to biatch and whine about money being the main issue canceling the season
in a lockout is about the stupidest thing they could do. You no put butts in seats you no get dollars.
So it's not about the money it's about rich owners smacking down the players and trying to put those lowly athletes
in their place.

If this cancels more than one month of the season I will put all my Red Wings shirts, hats and other paraphernalia (save for my Stevie Y game jersey)
into the trash. I'll be done with hockey and they can blow me. Without fans they are nothing.

I was a very big fan before the last lockout, which in turn made me a casual fan. If they cancel this season I might be totally done with hockey (though as a sports fan I'll probably put it in the same category as baseball, a sport I don't really care about but I'll at least pay attention to what's going on, aka only the late stages of the playoffs).

Same here. The last lockout dropped hockey off of my radar for awhile. The last couple of years the NYR had sucked me back in a bit, and I had been planning to buy the Center Ice package this season to follow more closely, since I'm out of market. I guess the silver lining is more silver lining my pocket!

Given the major issue between the two sides is money, I have no sympathy for either party. It's rich, millionaire players vs. richer millionaire/billionaire owners. Wah.

As a Leafs fan I was kinda 'meh' about the upcimong season anyways. The last strike killed a lot of my enthusiasm for the league and this one won't help either.

I am in a fortunate geographical location as Windsor, London, and Sarnia are all within an hour's drive so I'll have no problem getting my hockey fix from the OHL.

I'm getting my son a passport soon so we can go to some OHL games. I'll gladly drive 3 1/2 hours to Windsor: I was planning on the 7 hour drive to STL at least twice for Blues games anyway.

Other teams I'll be rooting for and going to see this year:
Kalamazoo K-Wings, Grand Rapids Griffins, Western Michigan and Michigan State, as well as my kids' teams.

Honestly, I'm most pissed about a lack of Fark NHL game threads this year.
