Things like this start from things that make sense (at the time), and eventually that reason gets lost. If pork is undercooked, people get sick - so, ban pork. (Islam has the same ban, probably for the same original reason).

Some people are allergic to shellfish, so ban shellfish.

Survival ages ago depended on having a bigger army than your enemy, so anything that promoted a growing population was encouraged, anything that took away from making more babies was discouraged (see Onan).

Now that we understand what makes people sick, how to keep clean and practice good personal hygiene, and we don't need lots of soldiers to survive, we don't need those laws anymore, because we have science and common sense. Tradition causes people to ignore both.

Amazing how those of us who don't drink the religion Kool-Aid are often told when we express disgust and this kind of shiat two things: a.) most people in religion don't believe in X--so don't be judgmental when crazy religious person does offensive/creepy/deadly thing, and b.) we need to have respect for other peoples' beliefs.

I'm all about respecting peoples' beliefs when their beliefs don't directly affect other people. Crazy Buddhist monks who set themselves on fire? That's fine so far as it doesn't affect others. It's an argument that I think started with Sam Harris. You could google moderate religion and Sam Harris and find something more in depth.

In the most basic sense, it's the idea that faith, believing something is true without evidence, is the core problem with extremists yet moderates share that trait. Moderates and extremists have the some core principles and only differ in the extent of their belief. If you validate the faith of the moderate then you validate the faith of the extremist. How can you separate the faith that prayer works or Jesus was the son of God from the faith that gays are an abomination? The moderate and the extremist are both using faith and the Bible to justify their claims.

I'm not a Torah scholar but I have my doubts that this practice is in there.
This is just plain wrong.
Hopefully no one signs the consent form.

Probably, yeah. A consent form is nothing more than a legal document that states you're knowingly allowing this to happen. All it does is prevent you from claiming later through a lawsuit that it was done without your permission.
