At NY Giants -7 Tampa Bay 44

Long layoff for the Giants (as will happen to everybody this year with the full slate of Thursday games, which also means a lot of short weeks for teams, very interesting)....Tampa didn't score a lot last week (16) against a bad Jax team.....But the Giants didn't set the world on fire FOUR WEEKS AGO when they last played (what's with these crazy layoffs?) I'll say a sneaky cover here.

Under feels good too.

At New England -13.5 Arizona 48.5
*sigh* that is an awful lot of points but justifiably so.....Arizona playing breakfast football (10AM to their body clocks) and we never play well in the early slot on East Coast. That said, our defense is pertty good and that's a huuuuuuuuuuge number......perhaps irrational confidence, but I say Arizona covers that. I don't think we're that bad and I don't know if the Pats are that good. But there are the extrinsic factors to the game that make this line what it is.

Minnesota -3 At Indianapolis 45.5
Minnesota. Indy is really bad and not that the Vikes are anything great but they're more than 3 great.

New Orleans -2.5 At Carolina 51.5
Huh. Carolina only scored 10 last week and NO looked surprisingly......uhh....they didn't look great either. Someone goes to 0-2. I'll say NO gets right today by at least a TD.

At Buffalo -3 Kansas City 44.5
Rough Buff baby.....I don't know why they are favored because they looked rough last week but....I'll say Rough Buff mainly because I like saying Rough Buff.

At Philadelphia -2.5 Baltimore 46.5
I don't understand how Philly is favored. Balt is I think better than they looked last week and I think this will be an early statement game for the 'Vens. And with the 'Vens D, I wonder if this is the game Vick gets KTFO and our kid Nic Foles gets some action.

Oakland -2 At Miami 39
Oakland making one of the longest commutes in the NFL (Tampa/MIA to Seattle, San Dog / Oak to Patriots) and....hmmm.....I forget if Miami was winless at home lat year or winless OTR but I'll say Raiders. And nice under; 39 points? you nnnnnnnnnnnnnever see that. it will happen (17-10) but it's just rare. also I liked i think netweavr on carson palmer: "carson palmer did that to you because he is a professional troll."

At Cincinnati -7 Cleveland 39
Cincinnati got ragdolled last week by the 'Vens 44-13.....that's a weird number, 7. Cleveland lost by only one to the Eagles....I'll say Cleveland covers. That number is just goofy adn I don't trust it.

Houston -7 At Jacksonville 41
Should be more IMO. Houston outright.

Dallas -3 At Seattle 42
Hmmmm.......hmmm.......Seattle (insert '4 timeouts' joke) really, really should have......no, i can't say that. but shiat, 5 plays in the red zone and the Cards held (thanks in part to Braylon "Cast Iron Frying Pan Hands" Edwards dropping a sure TD pass)......I'll say Qwest Field or whatever they call it will be the key factor and the Seahawks win outrigth. Straight moneyline, baby. Nothing against Dallas but that is a difficult place to play and what's more, Seattle appears to be a decent team.

Washington -3.5 At St. Louis 43
Washington. RGIII's speed on the carpet will be a factor. And while STL is building a defense, they aren't there yet. Worth noting however, Rams did drop a respectable 23 (or was it 24?) last week on a Detroit team that is defense-minded. So they can score and Washington gave up I tink 15 in the 4th quarter last week......I say Washington outright but not with a great deal of confidence. single digits and I would not be shocked if the Rams won. But I am picking Wash.

At Pittsburgh -5.5 NY Jets 42.5
Very interesting.....big number for these teams and I'll say Jets cover. If it was 3 or 4 I'd have no compunction at all about picking Yinzer Nation but....5.5 is a number I don't like for this matchup. Yinzer Nation only scored 19 in a loss last week and the Jets went for what, 44? This number is bad. I mean aside from cover, I don't know why the Steelers are even necessarily favored.

At San Diego -6.5 Tennessee 43
San Dog outright.

At San Francisco -7 Detroit 46
awesome......the o/u is suspect. SF's first home game. I don't like the number. Bad number this early. Uh oh....I feel.....Casey.....Kasem.......coming on.....These numbers this early in the season, man, I tell you. I keep tellin' these farkin' people, you come outta a godamn uptempo Week 1, and its impossilbe to make those transitions. Get Don on the phone. They do this to me all the time. I want a godamn concerted effort to not have a godamn uptempo godammn number every time i gotta make a godamn Week 2 prediction. I want someone to use their farkin' brain.

*shakes head*

sorry. SF is a very sexy pick and they certainly controlled the game last week. But I don't like the number and I'll say Detroit covers it. Like I said above, if the number was 4, 3.5, I'd not think twice about SF but 7 is a lot and we're not at the sample size in teh 2012 season (week 4) where we know who's who.

Monday Night Football Line

At Atlanta -3 Denver 51.5
What on O/U! I'll say ATL even though I'm not sold on Matt Ryan.

Not sure about this one. My theory is that whichever QB is on the field for Arizona, they won't spend enough time there to rest the defense. It'll either be 3-and-outs or three minute drives with a bomb to Fitzgerald. Either way, that D is going to get gassed and Brady will score at will once that happens.

I kind of see a replay of the Colts game from last year for the Patriots, so you may be right. But I'm so not convinced.

2012-09-16 11:23:22 AM
After a sterling 10-5 finish last weekend, it's time to notch things up and go for the elusive 16-0 showing here in the Week 2. Some very interesting games this time around, featuring allegedly strong teams looking to rebound after poor week 1 showings and last week's surprises trying to prove they're for real. Also, the Raiders play the Dolphins. As always, winners are in bold:

Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers:
So do I listen to Jay Cutler's warnings about his unstoppable offense or look at the two teams' track records? Obviously I look at past performance while reminding myself that Cutler gets pummelled by 300-pound men for a living. Green Bay is a much better team than they looked like in losing to an elite 49'ers squad, while Chicago is not as good as the Colts made them look last Sunday. I'll even go out on a limb here and predict a 38-21 final for the Packers.

Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills:
So which team can rebound from their embarrassing defeats last weekend? Again, going with past performance I have to think it's the Chiefs...it's one thing to get destroyed by a fully healthy Atlanta Falcons offense, but giving up 48 to the Jets is just humiliating. At least the Buffalo fans can rest easy in the knowledge that this year's team won't tease you like they did in 2011.

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers:
Maybe I'm clinging to last year a bit too much but I find it difficult to believe that the Saints have sunk this far, even missing a couple star players and most of their coaching staff. And speaking of taking a dive off the quality cliff, what happened in Carolina?

Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals:
There's nothing quite like a game against the Browns to re-focus a team after a crushing defeat to a division rival. Brandon Weeden won't play as poorly as he did last week, but few people could.

Minnesota Vikings at Indianapolis Colts:
The Vikings got all they could handle from a pesky Jaguars team last week while Indy's lack of defense was on display against the Bears. Even a part-time Adrian Peterson should be enough to carve up the Colts en route to a more routine win.

Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars:
It makes me nervous to pick so many road teams in a single week, but week 1's performances combined with the overall talent levels on the respective teams make it hard to go against the Texans here. Jacksonville may keep it closer than the Dolphins did, but Houston is too good not to go to 2-0.

Oakland Raiders at Miami Dolphins:
Assuming the Raiders can find a long snapper before game time (maybe two), their one-dimensional offense should be enough to take care of Miami's one-dimensional offense. It's going to be another long season in Miami...except, perhaps, for GM Jeff Ireland.

Arizona Cardinals at New England Patriots:
New England is good, in case you hadn't heard.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New York Giants:
The Bucs stop here. Or at least, their winning streak does...Eli and the Giants have something to prove after that painful opening-night loss to division rival Dallas, and it looks like the surprising Buccaneers (it says something when a team can already be labeled "surprising" after one game) will have to bear the brunt of it.

Baltimore Ravens at Philadelphia Eagles:
Despite their respective performances last week, this is absolutely a challenge for Baltimore. Not just in terms of player talent, but in getting over the Ravens' propensity last season for letting up after notching a big win. The odds-makers obviously agree, with Philadelphia penciled in as the early favorite nearly across the board.

Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks:
Despite what it did to me last week in Kansas City, I'm going to give my gut another shot here. It's telling me that Evil Romo shows up in Seattle and allows the Seahawks to rebound after a poor first showing.

Washington Redskins at St. Louis Rams:
The Redskins are not as good as they looked in outscoring New Orleans last week, but neither are the Rams as good as they looked in coming one clock error away from upsetting Detroit. Might as well start working on that RG3 bust for Canton right now.

New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers:
While he doesn't get a lot of the press, Ryan Clark is an incredibly important piece of the Steelers' defense. Getting him back for a low-altitude game will make a world of difference for PIttsburgh, let alone if James Harrison can go. Although it would be absolutely delicious for this Baltimoron to see Tim Tebow come into the game and lead another late-game victory.

Tennessee Titans at San Diego Chargers:
Despite what I've read from some (presumably San Diego) supporters, the Chargers looked dreadful on offense last Monday night and only managed to put it into the end zone once despite being handed a short field time and again by Oakland's special teams. In Nashville I think I go with the Titans, but here I think home field advantage is just enough to carry San Diego to 2-0.

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers:
While the media locks in on the post-game handshake, I'll focus instead on San Francisco's dismantling of the vaunted Green Bay offense relative to Detroit's underwhelming performance against the Rams. There won't be a stadium clock operator around to bail out the Lions this time, and it probably won't be a close enough game for that anyway.

Denver Broncos at Atlanta Falcons:
After some of the moaning over the Monday night games last week, we get a true marquee matchup here. Peyton looked completely at home with his new team last week, while the Falcons were firing on all cylinders while annihilating the Chiefs. I have to give the slight edge here to the home team, though, particularly given the number (and talent level) of weapons at Matt Ryan's disposal.

bigtime. the lines fluctuate (well, that's the point, here, the line never moved) based upon the betting patterns. Given A vs. B, A by 5 points, if there's a ton of action bet on A, the line will be adjusted to give bettors a reason to bet B. He's saying it is shady how despite a ton of action on the Ravens, the line wasn't adjusted accordingly. he's implying there's someone "they" know that we don't.

you know. Some South Philly guido got to Mike Vick: "yo, Mikey, can I talk to you 'bout a little business proposition. A friend of mine knows a guy who could make things very, very easy for you if, you know, you make the right decision. Capisce? Hey, fuggeddabowwww AAAAAOOOHHHHHHH!"

I don't know. The Pats finished last year with one of hte worst defenses in the NFL, so while Arizona certainly aren't offnesive juggernauts, I don't buy that today will be a series of 3-0s with, you know, the Pats controlling the ball for 38 minutes.

scary thought: Kolb starting, Skelton either inactive (NFL.com) or "questionable"....which means if Kolb does get KTFO, Ryan Lindley, who I believe wasn't even drafted (street FA) could see action. yeeeeeesh.

I'm not saying it will be. I really think we're going to be repeating the Colts game from last year, where all of a sudden they get three or four scoring drives of 3 minutes or so inbetween the Patriots scoring on at least two of them while up 21 to start said streak. I guess the more I think about it, the more I realize it'll be close.

2012-09-16 11:58:07 AM
My best bets for the day are:
Bucs +9. The Giants looked like ass last week in the premiere, and I think they'll win but only by a single score.
Vikings -2. We're about to see just how unlucky the Colts can get.
Ravens +2. Yeah, everyone's already said it. But seriously, fark the Eagles.

FriarReb98: I guess the more I think about it, the more I realize it'll be close.

does Belichick wash the opponents' balls as much he did Fitzgerald and to an extent, the Cardinals in general this week? he was chirping up Fitzy so much you'd think the Pats just acquired him. And Brady was lavishing praise on Adrian WIlson and P2. I can't recall seeing that. total lovefest.

and i just read teh injury report and P2 is questinoable with a hamstring. not good.

Yeah, I was making a joke about the "red flag" part of the comment. ;)

I can understand the line, fwiw. I kind of alluded to it in my post above, but Baltimore had a tendency to play like crap on the road after scoring big home wins last season, and the Ravens were only 4-4 on the road overall (4-5 if you count playoffs). Plus there's the whole John Harbaugh/Andy Reid thing, the apprentice returning to challenge the mentor.

Still think the Ravens win, but it's not hardly a foregone conclusion.

kinda reminds me of hearing Ed Hochuli on a local radio show a few years back, when he was asked if he could ever work a Cardinal game. he said regular season no because the NFL has a rule that you can't referee a game in your home state (they may have changed the rule, i don't know) so he said he cuold only do preseason Arizona games.

but then he pithily pointed out how stupid the rule is, as some refs lived in New Jersey but were permitted to work New York Giant games. He made a comment like, "because as we all know, Meadowlands Stadium is in New York, and New Jersey is so very, very far from New York."

Seems like a stupid rule.  If anything, they should use their "TV market" radius (70 miles from the stadium, I think?) to enforce such a rule.  But even then... people move and keep being fans of the teams they grew up with.

I moved from Chicago to New Orleans.  I'm a Saints and Bears fan.  I could ref a Bears game if I were a ref.
