I'll just leave this here, because it's a perfectly appropriate time to peddle my bullshiat.

If you actually think that Fallout 3, Mass Effect, World of Warcraft, Skyrim, Diablo II, Final Fantasy IV, Pokemon, Baldur's Gate 2, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VII are the best role-playing games ever made, then I pity you anyway, because there's the remote chance you will have kids someday, and that you will pollute the gene pool even further.

They didn't even have stuff like the first Dungeon Siege, Alundra, Legend of Legaia, Dragon Age: Origins, or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Not adding Arc the Lad 2 to a top 100 list just makes them lose whatever little credibility they had left. Pretty much a joke list.

Also, Chrono Cross was better than Chrono Trigger in EVERY possible way. In fact, CT might just be the most overrated rpg in history. It really didn't do anything new, most of the story was pretty bad, it had really goofy characters, etc.

Also, Baldur's Gate 2 not in first is ridiculous.

So these are video game RPG's.

No Shadowrun? Pathfinder?

I'm going home and taking my dice with me.

naughtyrev: FFVIII really deserved more love

Coming out of nowhere, FF8 is a decent playable game. Coming off of FF6 and FF7 with Dragon Quests 1-6, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, and several other decent games as competition? FF8 was like a handful of change at the bottom of a shiatty rest area toilet. Sure... there's some good there. But it's not worth reaching into the shiat to pull it out.

FFVIII really deserved more love - that game was a lot more complex than people gave it credit for.

My list from the 80's, not sure what I would rank in the 90's. Some of the Gold box games were crazy fun and then there was Ultima Underworld. I still can't believe System shock 1 isn't there. Plus stuff on the Amiga like Fairy Tale Adventure, Dungeon Master, Black Crypt, Eye of the Beholder and Sword of Aragorn.

1. Ultima 4.
2. Ultima 3.
3. Bards Tale.
4. Alternate Reality Dungeon
5. Legacy of the Ancients.
6. Phantasie III
7. Eternal Dagger
8. Wrath of Denethor
9. Shard of Spring
10. Moebius

Betrayal at Krondor is one of the best games ever made, and it didn't even make the list. For shame.

I would just like to say that Dragon's Dogma is my current favorite RPG. It was so much fun that it really rekindled the love and passion that I had for games when I was a kid. If anyone was looking at this list for games to try please give it a shot.

And Chrono Cross sucked. I played it before Trigger and thought it was terrible (not including the music). I finally played Chrono Trigger, ended up loving it unexpectedly, went back and played Cross. Chrono Cross was even worse the second time around. Kid was really the only good character, the double and triple techs were so limited, there were too many characters that contributed nothing to the story, and the whole Chrono Trigger relationship was just stuffed in there and tacked on. Without the Chrono name it would have just been a forgotten mediocre game. Well maybe not completely forgotten because the soundtrack was amazing and possibly some of the best RPG music ever.

I'm sorry, what was this list about again? Computer games? That's not what I thought of when I read the title...

Regarding Morrowind and Fallout 3... am I the only one who UTTERLY HATES the auto-leveling those games do with the monsters?

There's just so much satisfaction to be had coming back to a bunch of mobs who kicked your ass at one point and hunting them for sport once you've leveled past them.

the problem with lists of RPGs is that the games can be so many different mixes of setting, story, character, and gameplay that there needs to be sub-genres divided for differing preferences

for example, my top RPG of all time is Wizardry 8. The game mechanics were nearly flawless, and the replayability around them was nearly endless. Another favourite was arcanum, which had a remarkable level of flexibility despite the system imbalances

the reason these work for me, though, is that I create the characters in my head, and I want to see the game let me bring them to life. and in both cases, the story has enough range that I can play through it in a variety of ways.

on the other hand i found a game like baldur's gate to be more like reading a really boring book. there was no engagement, minimal decision making (by comparison) and very little opportunity to express my creations in the game.

i'm sure that puts me in the minority, but the fact that wizardy 8 still has an active mod community more than 10 years after release says that there's still a place for games like that.

Mike_LowELL: No, actually, I just understand the topic well enough that I keep my mouth shut when the time comes to rank the gigantic variety of "role-playing games" made in the last thirty-five years, and will keep my mouth shut until I've played one-hundred percent of all relevant games to completion and/or mastery, something that will never ever happen.

In other words, you won't voice your opinion for fear of being laughed at and mocked like you do to everyone else. Got it.
Then you go on to write

Mike_LowELL: Ranking them provokes nothing but a bunch of nerds and/or virgins...

yet you're the expert and know more than all of us and those damned bastards at IGN so who's the nerd? I think what's really going on is you're bitter that you aren't getting the press these shiatty articles are. Newsflash, very few people want to read the angry bitter rantings of someone who doesn't like much and has little good to say about anything on some shiatty blog.

Mike_LowELL: Stop giving your attention to these lists in the first place. They're a complete waste of time, written by people who hardly know anything about the medium, designed for the purpose of pissing off readers and generating ad revenue. The only people who are authoritative enough to comment on the topic are compiling exhaustive, well-written reviews, and indirectly ranking games with those reviews. They don't waste their time writing crappy lists. The end. Have a nice day.

You'll live. Lists like this give people a reason to argue the merits of their particular favorites and generate conversation. And no one wants to read your whiny assed "I hate lists because the people that write them just don't understand the medium as deeply and profoundly as I do." you self important jackass. Get over yourself, your opinions or thoughts are worth the same as everyone else's, exactly jack and shiat.

All the people who hate Chrono Cross are blind Chrono Trigger fanboys who wanted an exact copy of CT with the same characters, story, etc, and instead, they got a completely different game with only a few tie ins and references to CT, so the fanboys biatched about it and still do.

The graphics, music, story, music, main characters, combat, etc were all better in CC. The game was a bit more serious and took a bit of a darker tone to the goofy CT.

It's an unpopular opinion, though an unbiased one.

Anyway, my top ten (as if anyone cares):

01. Planescape: Torment (as much a visual novel as an RPG, but oh so satisfying and replayable)
02. Fallout (awesome setting, interesting characters, decent tactical combat)
03. Baldur's Gate II (probably the deepest, most interesting and replayable fantasy RPG ever, and with great usability ugrades over the original)
04. Deus Ex (cool setting, tons of options for progression and character development, decent story)
05. Morrowind (fantastic setting, big world to explore, tons of freedom, epic story, but some clunky mechanics)
06. Knights of the Old Republic (solid story, memorable characters, well-realized setting, and it's fun to be evil)
07. Diablo 2 (loot and more loot, endless replayability, but not much roleplaying)
08. Fallout: New Vegas (great variety in character builds, decent gunplay, solid writing, great flavor/atmosphere)
09. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (solid setting, great cutscenes, fun main character, fancy graphics)
10. Dark Souls (equal parts punishing and rewarding, fantastic exploration, great variety of areas and character builds, epic boss battles, quirky setting)
