I really enjoy IGN's game reviews, but their top X lists do tend to be "games that came out in the last year and everyone loved, and then one super obscure game just for giggles".

That being said, the RPG's I've found the most enjoyment in tend to be the most universally hated games. Remember "Alpha Protocol"? I love that damn game. And "Nostalgia" on the DS. Mediocre reviews, tons of fun, and definitely on my top 10 of all time list.

ModernLuddite: Alpha Protocol

That game was fun but it was not really error tested very well. That coked out guy was either the easiest boss of all time or the hardest depending on whether you used the pistol or not.

Also where were Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force?

Alpha Protocol is the greatest game simply for the scene with the terrorist. "Now YOU'RE the airplane!" I laughed heartily.

Coming out of nowhere, FF8 is a decent playable game. Coming off of FF6 and FF7 with Dragon Quests 1-6, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, and several other decent games as competition? FF8 was like a handful of change at the bottom of a shiatty rest area toilet. Sure... there's some good there. But it's not worth reaching into the shiat to pull it out.

Glad to see Chrono Trigger near the top. Definitely one of my all time favorite games. Played that for days on an emulator in college one time. Finally stopped when I was able to beat Lavos the first time you meet him.

Skyrim is insanely awesome and one of my favorite games, but I would put it in the 10-20 range. I just didn't care for my role in the main story, which should be able to draw you in, and that was also a problem in Oblivion. The side quests are farking great, but for the main story (and two in Skryim) I just didn't care all that much. I wanted to see the utter destruction of the Thalmor, but instead I'm relegated to killing patrols and waiting for the embassy to refill with them every now and then.

Mass Effect series (barring the ending) was one of the few to make me care about my decisions. I love that series. Plus it got my girlfriend into video games (she loves being a renegade Shep for some reason), so I will always have a reason to like it.

Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games (also barring the first stupid ending). I loved everything about it, even the glitches. While New Vegas was great, I still think there are more memorable moments in Fallout 3. Now Fallout 2 (with the restoration mod) should've been up there. THAT was a great RPG, because it really let you do pretty much anything. I never killed a kid, but I liked knowing I had the option if one pissed me off.

Played Diablo II for days, to the point where I had to uninstall it and give it away to have a chance of being a productive member of society.

Never got into WoW, but its success speaks for itself. I won't disparage it, mainly because my addiction to D2 was on par to other's addiction to WoW.

Baldur's Gate II is freaking amazing. Nuff said

Yes and no.

5 didn't kill the franchise. 5 was a pupae that gave us Dead Rising.

Honestly, with 3 there... I'm willing to say sayonara to it if it gives us more real Zombie Apocalypse games like Dead Rising 2

I'd like to get my hands on 2 for a modern platform to test your theory. But I don't see how anything could beat 3.

Disagree with Chrono Cross being on the list. It was a mediocre sequel that tried to do far too much (150 CHARACTERS!) and instead basically created no characterization for almost all of them (unless CHA count a language filter for eaCHA CHAracter, whiCHA would simply alter their lines very slightly.)

Furthermore, Suikoden proved you CAN do lots and lots of characters and still give each some characterization and uniqueness... so no excuse.

Also glad to see BoF 3 getting some love.

Shame capcom abandoned that series, along with Megaman...

...Bard's Tale 3, Baldur's Gate 1, Neuromancer (sci-fi can be RPG too right? it didn't say "fantasy RPG"), Wasteland (sci-fi RPG) not in top 10. list sucks. etc.

2012-09-15 07:37:34 PM
They didn't even have stuff like the first Dungeon Siege, Alundra, Legend of Legaia, Dragon Age: Origins, or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Not adding Arc the Lad 2 to a top 100 list just makes them lose whatever little credibility they had left. Pretty much a joke list.

Also, Chrono Cross was better than Chrono Trigger in EVERY possible way. In fact, CT might just be the most overrated rpg in history. It really didn't do anything new, most of the story was pretty bad, it had really goofy characters, etc.

Also, Baldur's Gate 2 not in first is ridiculous.

I'll just leave this here, because it's a perfectly appropriate time to peddle my bullshiat.

If you actually think that Fallout 3, Mass Effect, World of Warcraft, Skyrim, Diablo II, Final Fantasy IV, Pokemon, Baldur's Gate 2, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VII are the best role-playing games ever made, then I pity you anyway, because there's the remote chance you will have kids someday, and that you will pollute the gene pool even further.

Stop giving your attention to these lists in the first place. They're a complete waste of time, written by people who hardly know anything about the medium, designed for the purpose of pissing off readers and generating ad revenue. The only people who are authoritative enough to comment on the topic are compiling exhaustive, well-written reviews, and indirectly ranking games with those reviews. They don't waste their time writing crappy lists. The end. Have a nice day.

It wasn't abandoned, it was murdered and the body hidden.

The series went downhill with BoF 4 (it wasn't horrible, but it seemed kinda phoned in on the developers part. It played kinda like a B-story to BoF 3 than a true sequel).

Now, I appreciate that Capcom wanted to do something different with BoF 5, but seriously, they would've had more success if they started a whole new franchise entirely with it instead of shoehorning BoF in it. Instead, you ended up with a game that didn't really fit the jrpg dynamic all that well and alienated fans of the series. When it didn't sell well, Capcom pretty much went "well, that series is dead".

As doglover mentioned, that team ended up working on Dead Rising (which incorporated several concepts from BoF 5), which really, is what they should've done in the first place and kept to a more 'traditional' tact with Breath of Fire 5 (even if that meant delaying it a year or two). If they had, We could be on Breath of Fire 7 or 8 by now.

This list being devoid of Asheron's Call is a complete crime, and EQ should be a bit higher in the list. Just sayin. Also, as much as I adore Skyrim, it's probably rated a bit too high.

And wtf are Mario and Pokemon games doing on this?

Rent Party: I don't get the love for Mass Effect. I've only played the demos and thought the game play was "meh" at best.

You can not really enjoy ME with just a short one mission demo. I love Mass Effect because of the story and interaction with the characters. Throughout each game you learn so much about them to the point of caring about what happens to them and the choices you make. That takes an entire game. That will then hook you into the other games to keep that interaction going.

The combat in ME is pretty straight forward although definitely different from your basic first person shooter which was nice.

Either way, play through an entire game if you want to find out why people love it.

2012-09-15 07:57:14 PM
Anyway, my top ten (as if anyone cares):

01. Planescape: Torment (as much a visual novel as an RPG, but oh so satisfying and replayable)
02. Fallout (awesome setting, interesting characters, decent tactical combat)
03. Baldur's Gate II (probably the deepest, most interesting and replayable fantasy RPG ever, and with great usability ugrades over the original)
04. Deus Ex (cool setting, tons of options for progression and character development, decent story)
05. Morrowind (fantastic setting, big world to explore, tons of freedom, epic story, but some clunky mechanics)
06. Knights of the Old Republic (solid story, memorable characters, well-realized setting, and it's fun to be evil)
07. Diablo 2 (loot and more loot, endless replayability, but not much roleplaying)
08. Fallout: New Vegas (great variety in character builds, decent gunplay, solid writing, great flavor/atmosphere)
09. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (solid setting, great cutscenes, fun main character, fancy graphics)
10. Dark Souls (equal parts punishing and rewarding, fantastic exploration, great variety of areas and character builds, epic boss battles, quirky setting)

I'll bite.

Chrono Cross was a rushed video game that pretty much took a crap on Chrono Trigger. If you pretty much remove the 90% of the story that they jammed in the end to make it look like it was sequel to Chrono Trigger, you would pretty much have a generic RPG with WAY too many useless characters. It wasn't a bad RPG, but to say that it was really a sequel to Chrono Trigger, despite how many times the developmental team for Cross says it is, is flawed. One a side note, I hate the revisionist updating on Chrono Trigger to shoehorn it with Chrono Cross.

As far as the list goes, I am content with it.

Aye, I remember Dragon Quarter, which was.... yeaaaah.

And yeah, 4 felt a bit phoned it. Which is a shame, because it was fascinating. (I still think of it as a prequel to all the games, even though I think it's technically not?)

Just like Diablo isn't a RPG like the others, just like Mass Effect isn't a RPG like the others. Sorry, your wrong opinion about what constitutes a RPG is wrong. WoW definitely belongs.

The worst infraction is crossing out FF4 from the top 10. Yes, let's remove the game that modernized RPG storytelling for yet another generic Breath game.

Wait, no, leaving Pokemon Blue/Red at #4 is.

Good lord. You have absolutely no taste in games.

If you're going to put a Bethesda game in the top 10, it has to be Morrowind. Has to be. Fallout 3 would follow it.

And Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines has to be higher too.

Can someone tell me how I can play Dragon Force again? I miss that game so much, and Sega Saturns aren't exactly commonplace. I remember reading a while back that it might get ported over to xbox live arcade. Anyone know?

It's not really worth ranking RPGs. There are a lot of excellent ones and each have slightly different gameplay, but some of my personal favorites;

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Super Mario RPG
3. Tactics Ogre
4. Breathe of Fire 3
5. Shining Force 2 (whatever one had ashe the phoenix)
6. FF3 (or if you want to call it 6, whatever)
7. FF7
8. Skyrim
9. Fallout 3 or New Vegas (pretty much the same game)
10. Pokemon (just lump it all together)

Honorable mention - Ogre Battle, Fire Emblem, Kingdom Hearts, and of course, Dragon Force
