If it stops the atrocity that is Czech absinthe, it will be worth it.

You know where else you can find drinks spiked with methanol? In the moonshine and blackmarket booze your new laws will force in. Congrats.

Came to point this out.
'19 die from counterfeit booze, so let's ban the real stuff' is not as good an idea as they think it is.

Czech, please.

This is not going to end well. Although some Al Czapones are gonna get rich, everyone else is going to suffer.

It would be a great time to invest in a travel firm that organizes tours of neighboring countries, and if I lived in Germany, Slovakia, Poland or Austria, I would be opening bars right up to the border.

I see a loophole in their cunning plan. They've banned hard alcohol, while clearly what was being sold was hard alocohol.

Their women are already hot, no need for the booze.

No I need the booze to get the hotties drunk enough to get with a guy like me. Ugly guys chances in Czech just dropped significantly.

Did you miss the part about the methanol? Drink enough of that and you die. You'd be as well off drinking methyl ethyl ketone.

/ they banned the sale till they could get rid of the bottles containing methanol

The announcement comes after at least 19 deaths linked to people who drank vodka or rum drinks spiked with methanol...

Wut.

Let's ban cigarettes because both cigarettes and cars produce smoke, and the smoke from cars kills you much more quickly.

Do you mean a return of hard liquor sales? Or do you mean as normal as things get on a planet inhabited by slightly hairy psychotic apes?

/ I imagine the answer to both is; after November

2012-09-15 02:13:12 PM
Relax all you drunks. What the stories don't say is that this is just a temporary ban until they are able to figure out some way of keeping methanol out of the supply chain.

But as the article says "It is estimated that up to 20 percent of all the liquor in restaurants across the country is likely made on the black market". It may take a good deal of effort to shut down black manufacturing.

i work as a chef here in a pub. I've been waiting for this story to finally reach Fark,.alot of good cocktail bars are realy gonna suffer if this goes on very long, which it looks like it will. A 3 million crown($161559) fine is a pretty big deterrent to selling hard booze, at least we still have the best beer in the world.

It doesn't actually say that in the article, that I saw.

At least it's an emergency health thing, and not full blown derpaderpa.

It's not permanent. They are just trying to temporarily halt the sale of chemically tainted vodka that has killed a bunch of people. It's like banning e-coli tainted cantalope temporarily.

I felt that it was implied; but I could be wrong. It does make sense if you think about it; take a couple of months to track down all the bottles and the producers cutting hooch with methanol; then get back to selling.

It's not a full prohibition; only on products that are over 20% alcohol. And it is a legitimate health thing; not a hooch is bad thing.

/ methanol does not mix well with the central nervous system

Yeah, but this only encourages people to try to make their own stronger booze, and then we can count on lots of people drinking pure ethelene glycol right off the radiator, like in the early days of moonshining.

Poorly written article. Read like a Fox News report on Obama's birth certificate. Temporarily halt to try to see if they can't do a better job controlling the sources and perhaps inspect the stock. I imagine it goes something like 40% of the bottles say Smirnov and the other 60 say Smirinov and they can perhaps at least weed out some of the obvious poisoned bottles.

Lemme post the full part of that from the same article: "Heger said the ban could possibly take weeks. It is estimated that up to 20 percent of all the liquor in restaurants across the country is likely made on the black market."

So they're not talking about a permanent ban. They're talking about a ban that lasts long enough to try and get the counterfeit, methanol-laced booze off the common market. Honestly that seems reasonable, given that you supposedly have a 1-in-5 chance of drinking some methanol-laced death if you order something alcoholic from a restaurant there.

The time on the ban itself may do as much good as any investigation they're going to perform, too. While I'm sure a number of these operations are run and financed by various mafias, I'd bet that most of them are a sort of fly-by-night kind of deal. A few weeks of being unable to sell anything and the smaller operations will probably have to close up shop and move on to something else. Of course the same may be true of various small liquor stores. Sadface.

So, not the end of the world, just a stern reaction to a farked up situation.

If it was as simple as a few brands/moonshine being the culprit; I imagine the ban would be narrower. I'm betting that nefarious individuals are buying crates of vodka; cutting the vodka with methonal; that one bottle of vodka is now 2 or 3 bottles. So the individual turns around and sells the 2 or 3 bottles of vodka at a reduced price to stores. The market does the rest.

/ they still have beer; the problem has to be systematic in nature or they wouldn't have gone with a ban of all hard liquor.
