Had a feeling that was going to happen.

All I know is he did a rifftrax I never watched.

2012-09-15 09:14:20 AM
Something something Anime Abandon and Spoony Experiment (see Ultima 1-9 retrospective) still pretty awesome, although your mileage may vary.

I havn't watched his stuff for a while, but i thought his Jack and Mr Magoo seemed a little 'forced'.

2012-09-15 09:34:21 AM
But he never reviewed G.I. Joe: The Movie... T_T

\ Glad to know he's got new projects in the works, though.

2012-09-15 10:18:52 AM
That's a good way to be. We totally look forward to inviting him back for next year.

2012-09-15 10:29:46 AM
As great as he was, better him to go out now than to be accused of "jumping the shark". The kid's got a damn good comedic future ahead of him.

You scared the hell out of me, Subby. I'd thought he died.

2012-09-15 11:02:44 AM
What the heck did I just watch. You mean people sit around actually watching stuff other than car crashes on youtube?

2012-09-15 11:02:45 AM
Can't wait to see his next project!

2012-09-15 11:07:17 AM
Who does this guy think he is, Carson?

For cryin' out loud....

No crap. Same here!

I don't know what a nostalgia critic is, but mad props for "We don't feel that just because something is popular we should keep it going." Jenna Marbles could take note.

Also, where has Mike Stoklasa (aka Harry Plinkett) been at?

TGWTG has gone seriously downhill in quality in the last year or so. I used to love that site. But now it seems like anyone with a webcam can think they can sit in front of a webcam and make witty comments about bad movies. The truth is that commentary like that is an art. Just because you are a nerd and make nerdy comments about bad movies doesn't automatically mean you are going to be funny.

But my biggest problem is that most of their reviews are disingenuous. They aren't interested in really reviewing something or making good commentary. They just go for laughs and pander to the audience. Film Brain is a perfect example of this. He gave Transformers 2 when it came out a positive review in written format. I didn't think it was a good movie, but whatever. He liked it, OK. But then he makes a Bad Movie Beatdown... about Transformers 2. His rebuttal to his initial review? "I was wrong,"

No, FB, you weren't. You liked it, and that's fine. Now you're just pandering to the audience. Which is what most of the other reviewers on there do as well. I can't take anything he does there seriously anymore.

Nostalgia Critic no longer reviews stuff that is really nostalgic. I mean, The Cell? Really? Spoony was awesome at one time but now he's just gone crazy. Bennett The Sage is an annoying personality. I could go on, but whatever.

For what it's worth, I think Todd In The Shadows is alright. That Sci-Fi Guy is OK, but I'm biased because I know Leo in real life. Pretty much everyone else on there is boring. They all think they can be James Rolfe, but they can't. James Rolfe is consistently at the top of the game because he puts his heart and soul into everything he does. He works HARD to make things funny, and does his research. Most of the personalities on TGWTG are lazy and go for cheap laughs.

If TGWTG were to go away tomorrow, I really wouldn't be too heartbroken.

Well that's a bummer. The All Good Things gag in the Scooby Doo video and the hype for their latest anniversary "movie" thingy had me thinking this for a few weeks. And that's a bummer that the Critic is gone.

I can dig on not letting something's popularity determine if it continues or not, but let's be honest. What are the view numbers for the Critic compared to everything else on the site? As someone who's watched these goofy little videos for years..the rest of the site is cute yes, but what's the big draw? It's the Critic and always has been. I think dude's making a mistake personally, but that's his to make.

I can't speak for everyone else other than me and my tiny group of friends, but the rest of TGWTG is just so meh. The only other reviewer I can kinda watch is Linkara, and that's only sometimes because his bit gets old. Their little "movies" and other projects are unwatchable. I'm glad they're doing what they like (and making some money off it apparently), but it's just so bad. Like, I'm embarrassed watching it. I'm embarrassed for them. It's worse than watching LARPing. And to give up the biggest draw-in show to do more of that? Ugh. :(

First the AVGN semi-retires, now they've ended the Critic, geez. I guess it's a younger man's Internet these days, and that makes me sad.

So yeah, thanks for the years of enjoyable entertainment with the Critic. I'm very sad to see it go and that it couldn't be continued while working on other projects. I really hope this isn't an ego thing, Doug. You're a talented guy for sure, I just hate to see one of the most enjoyable things to come along get ended because you buy too much of your own hype and get far far too pretentious. Best of luck.

NC was good, but most of the other people on his site were terribly unfunny/tried too hard/etc.

Todd in the Shadows was probably the best thing on the site.

And also this pretty much sums it all up.

I started to regularly watch the Critic when he did his review of the odd numbered Star Trek films. Since them I've been watching his other reviews. I tell people that since I watched him review a certain movie that means I don't have to actually watch it now (Superman 4, for example). I feared that his 'All Good Things...' episode was a hint that he was going to do this, and not just a clever way to intro 'To Boldly Flee...'. I haven't seen part 8 yet, loved part 4.

As for the others, I saw one episode of 'Spooning with Spoony' and I watch the Nostalgia Chick, not just because I want to see her make out with her two female friends who regularly appear, but also because she does make good arguments for her view points in her movie reviews instead of going for that cheap laugh.

Been a fan of his for a few years now, so this is bad news. Except for the part about a new project, that's good news.

This is NEUTRAL NEWS!

Looks like Spoony got out at the right time.

NC stopped being enjoyable for me around when Suburban Knights came out (partly due to Phelous, god it made me so happy he "died" in To Boldly Flee, too bad it didn't stick)

The last NC that I enjoyed was the Moulin Rouge review. Don't watch anything on TGWTG since Spoony left, I just go to his site instead.

It's a comedy site. It's not meant fir real honest reviews.

Why would you even go to a site for real unbiased reviews of mostly late 80s/early 90s movies??

So.

75% decrease of website traffic predicted.

Yup. Beyond the occasional bright spot, everything just felt like it was a kid with an IPhone who forgot that excessive swearing didn't automatically mean that it was funny, and "reviewing" The Room (or ripping on Star Wars I) for the 14th time wasn't necessary.

...and "The Character" was him. Him doing a bit of course, but it was him.

2012-09-15 03:20:40 PM
A real good general rule for that site seems to be, "If they can make more than just reviews, they're likely to be better talent." That and the ones who have consistently higher performances don't have a set schedule on when their episodes come out. That's due to obvious reasons though.

At least with it ending now it'll have been a show that had its high and low points, but was overall fun for me. Bonus points for being distributed better than most 'real' shows have been treated to over the internet.

2012-09-15 03:49:11 PM
I'd kind of wondered about that since his last review had a plotline that parodied the final episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", and I remember finishing that review and wondering if that meant it was the last one. That was a month ago, and I guess it really was.

I really had nothing against TGWTG, myself, but you've hit it on the head here. These days, there are so many douches in front of video cameras, ragging on so many little corners of pop culture, giving negative reviews of so many different things, that there's this big "I hate everything" circle-jerk going on online. Between the gifted delivery of critics like Yahtzee Croshaw and the remarkable ease with which it is possible to write negative criticism - bad reviews are fun to write - everybody and his brother is a professional hater now.

DSP

The quality varies but he's certainly prolific.

their riff of Batman was worth the money. It messed me up because it was the first non-main crew riff I watched so I tried some other ones.

JonPace: Why would you even go to a site for real unbiased reviews of mostly late 80s/early 90s movies??

Why wouldn't I? Is a movie not able to be properly reviewed if it's over a certain age?

My issue isn't necessary with Doug Walker. The guy can be funny at times. He just hasn't been all that much lately. It's obvious he's run out of material, and he recognized that. I'm glad he knew when to stop. My issue is more with most of the other personalities on Channel Awesome. If they aren't really "reviewing" anything and it's strictly for entertainment purposes, they are doing a pretty bad job at it.

It was nice on AVGN when he would give credit to a bad game, or explain why some weren't as bad as people think. IIRC he refused to do Zelda II because it wasn't a legitimately bad game. Yahtzee has some great quotes regarding many gamer pet peeves, many of them generalizable to games other than the one he is reviewing.

He did review it. He pretty much says he doesn't think it's a bad game per se, just a frustrating one at times and not what people were expecting after the first game.

He did the same sort of review with Street Fighter 2010. He said it was frustrating, but if it had some flaws ironed it the game would be considered a classic.

James Rolfe is great because he has such a likable personality. I don't know how well AVGN will translate to a full movie, but I guess we'll see. I'm interested in seeing it.

Rolfe, despite being caustic, genuinely enjoys old-school video games and it comes through clearly when he tells stories of enjoyable moments playing really hard games, relatable to anyone that played games as a kid in that era. He has an amazing scowl when something horrible happens to him when playing and he doesn't seem prone to "I stink at this game therefore it's terrible" that some caustic reviews seem to take. Granted, most of the games he reviews are so genuinely bad it's easy to tee off on them. I also have no idea how a movie will work, but I'll give it a shot. Hopefully it's not 90 minutes of him punching Bugs Bunny.

I've seen a little of Nostalgia Critic. I liked him, he was genuinely funny, and it felt like he was rather candid and honest about the serious problems that the movies had.

I honestly thought he'd actually die of an aneurysm. Not like this.

Somebody on Fark posted a link to one of his reviews, and that's how I started watching. Loved the "Thomas the Tank Engine" review (sparkle sparkle sparkle!). Love the Cinema Snob as well, but I generally avoid the types of films he reviews. His review of "Maniac" was great.

2012-09-15 08:36:10 PM
Good for Doug to say fark it, all good things must come to a end.

I watched old PSAs when I got bored which lead me to both Doug and James which lead to people like Todd and Brad. Sure, there are a few misses and eh episodes but it makes the hits even more better.

His last 10 or so reviews have been weak. Glad to see he moves on when he gets bored. Hope he does something interesting, and hell, if he gets an itch, I doubt that coat will be far off.

I used to think so as well. But then I downloaded Dirty Fancing with Janet Varney (who also does the voice of Korra on Avatar) and Cole Stratton (no idea who he is). It was pretty damn good, and made my top 5 favorite RiffTrax.

My branching went from AVGN to Nostalgia Critic to the rest of TGWTG including Cinema Snob, Spoony, Benzaie, Nostalgia Chick, and Phelous.

Spoony and Brad have the best "personality" when it comes to making a video as far as the Team goes... they know how to tell a story. I watch several others on TGWTG but they seem to be the best overall balance between criticism and engagement. Nostalgia Chick and OanCitizen have some real chops when it comes to plot narrative and deconstruction. I want to like ThatSciFiGuy but I just can't connect with his style. Phelous and Lupa seem to go for a lot of movies I like so I watch all their stuff too. BMB seems to recap bad movies which I'm okay with. MikeJ has a very good British style that I like. I never watched too much of Linkara but I liked what I did see. Paw and Todd were always awesome whenever they did a crossover with someone but I'm not much into their core reviews.

Oh, and you can't forget JesuOtaku for how she is so intense in her detailed reviews.

Now, if they riffed the Avatar live-action movie with the cartoon voice-actor cast? That would be a rainbow of win!

How bout the NES Punk?

I am a big fan of game theory.....

Some of those topics are very well researched.
