If you attend a religious school, you have to deal with goofball religious edicts.

I can't imagine surviving college without coffee.

Jon iz teh kewl: BarkingUnicorn: This is the result the LDS elders clarifying doctrine. It's not caffeine they abhor, but hot drinks.

not all hot drinks. for example Green Tea they drink. But Not Black.

Seriously? Is it really that hard for you guys to Google this?

The "Word of Wisdom" prohibits (as clarified by the church's Prophets) alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and illegal drugs. That's it. The coffee/tea prohibition (as they'll tell you) has to do with tannic acid - not caffeine. Caffeine is actually cool; hot cocoa is a favorite Mormon drink. Herbal teas are okay, too. But green tea is prohibited, as is black tea. Anything with camellia sinensis is a no-no.

That's the RULE of the religion. But caffeine use is pretty rare in the LDS church because a lot of people say it violates the "spirit" of the Word of Wisdom. For most devout Mormons, healthy eating is considered part of the "spirit" of the Word of Wisdom - lots of fresh fruits & veggies, whole grains, etc. So sodas are usually pretty rare though not specifically prohibited. As one of my friends put it: "We only drink caffeine if we're driving on a long road trip; they we have sodas. If you never have any caffeine, a soda on a road trip is a heck of a stimulant."

If it is really about the taste, there are a ton of sodas out there without caffeine. Boylan makes some delicious sodas. (Love the grape.) Why go for the soda that has one of the highest levels of caffeine?

Caffeine makes the world go 'round, but soda is pretty disgusting once you get used to not drinking it. HFCS just tastes WEIRD to me now. I'm screwed if (when) the world's coffee supply constricts.

'ffeine only really works the first few times anyway. After a while all you're doing is staving off withdrawal.

BYU students staging a protest against the no-caffeine policy on campus were asked to leave Brigham Square by police officers.
...
Howard got involved with the "BYU for caffeine" Facebook group after hearing about that BYU dining services saw "no demand" for drinks on campus.

"BYU's reasoning wasn't accurate," Howard said. "We really hope to see a change. It's not about the caffeine, it's about the flavors."

*facepalm*

Oh, no wait. I had them confused with someone else. But who?
