Romney is more Tony Stark than Musk. Still, an interesting read and if anyone is proof that the American Dream is still very much alive its him. Only it isn't just hard work, its luck and smart decision making along with hard work that gets you places. Especially as we have become a nation where a college degree is pretty much necessary to get you a paycheck you can live on.

FTA:

Musk took his winnings and plowed them into another startup called X.com. This was basically an online bank and would later become PayPal.

Except that's not what happened at all. PayPal existed before Musk and X.com ever entered the picture.

"The current incarnation of PayPal is the result of a March 2000 merger between Confinity and X.com.[11] Confinity was founded in December 1998 by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek, and Ken Howery, initially as a Palm Pilot payments and cryptography company.[12] X.com was founded by Elon Musk in March 1999, initially as an Internet financial services company. Both Confinity and X.com launched their websites in late 1999.[13] Both companies were located on University Avenue in Palo Alto. Confinity's website was initially focused on reconciling beamed payments from Palm Pilots[14] and X.com's website initially featured financial services. Both services offered email payments as a feature."

"Boeing just took $20 billion and 10 years to improve the efficiency of their planes by 10 percent. That's pretty lame."

This guy is awesome.

the car industry is littered with corpses of companies that tried to go from niche to mass market on their own. Most recently: Spyker, with its stupidly timed buyout of Saab.

most of the other niche manufacturers are owned by a bigger player: Lotus (owned by Proton, a Malaysian car company), Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, etc.

Tesla's battery technology is very good, and will have a future under Toyota ownership.

And a crap ton of money from the government so he could build a real factory and not put out cars that look like a grade schooler built them.

/welcomes the electric car revolution
//wishing it would move faster.
