poonesfarm: You know what to do, subby. Shoulder roll in there and take care of business. And by that I mean masturbate furiously. The "terrorist" will be so confused the cops'll be able to take him out with no problems.

No no no.. that's all wrong! He needs to walk in, arms akimbo, junk hanging out, and shout, "terrorize this, asshole!".

Fond memories of the KC Federal building. Dad used to take my sister and I to work on the 17th floor when he'd work graveyards. Basically had the whole building to ourselves. Running up and down hallways, stairwells, riding the Otis, playing with punchcards and tape and dumb terminals. ...sigh...it was a different time...

atomicmask: timujin: atomicmask: SO when stuff like this happens, someone is a terrorist...its not this you think of

Yes, because only one of those pictures was actually taken in this country. When I think of terrorists in the Middle East or North Africa, I think of the people in those other pictures.

Mmm alright, so people stating they have intent to harm is not reason to believe they are responsible when harm is done...what about statistics?

Number of deaths resulting from islamic terrorism in the united states alone.. 3,094

Number of deaths resulting from tea party terrorist acts in the united states... 1...maybe..if you reach.

so again, how are you so quick to assume its a republican or right wing conservative when the numbers do not even agree with you?

There's 168 people in Oklahoma City that would disagree with your numbers.

blockhouse: If that's the case, then the distinction between the terms "terrorist," "revolutionary," "patriot," and "freedom fighter" start to erode very quickly. All popular uprisings and insurrections would fall under the definition of "terrorism," no matter how legitimate the grievance. You would quickly come to the conclusion that Jefferson advocated terrorism for his claim in the Declaration of Independence (about the right and duty of the people to throw off an oppressive government).

I think of McVeigh as a lone militant. Of course, if it was his intent to kill those kids in the federal building daycare, that would be different. But as it is, they were collateral damage in his quixotic one-man fight against an oppressive state

All this talk about the civilian, political, or military nature of the target is missing the point. What makes somebody a terrorist is, quite simply the means they achieve to use their goal, i.e. terror.

Here's a simple example for you, hopefully historical enough that we can take modern politics out of it. When French Resistance fighters shot German soldiers because they wanted to get rid of German soldiers, that's war. When German soldiers shot back at French resistance fighters, that's also war. When German soldiers shot French civilians to scare Resistance fighters away from fighting, that's terrorism.

If Israel were to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities to stop them making a bomb, that would be an act of war. If Israeli agents assassinate Iranian politicians to scare them away from making a bomb, that's terrorism.

If Taliban fighters attack US soldiers in Afghanistan because they don't want US soldiers in Afghanistan, that's war. If Taliban fighters try to light their socks on fire on a transatlantic flight, that's terrorism.

indylaw: AndreMA: The dogs are excessively sensitive.

Those dogs get a lot of false positives, and there is some research suggesting that the dogs may be primed to pick up on subtle cues by their handlers. So, if the handlers think that there's a bomb in the vehicle, the dogs may be more likely to react because dogs have evolved to anticipate their human alpha's feelings.

Correct, except for your reasoning as to why that happens. Cues are picked up by associative learning...Clever Hans is a good example we use in intro BA or psych classes. Nothing evolved in order to anticipate human feelings, it's just that a slight tug (as an example) could be paired with a true positive with high reward a few times (sometimes accidentally), then the dog will alert to those tugs on the leash in anticipation of the reward.

fluffy2097: modesto: I suspect you are right. What I actually had in mind is this-

I live like 2 blocks from Tahrir square. As is typical during clashes, the violence is extremely confined, and for the vast majority of Egyptians, life is normal. This country has 90,000,000 people. Of them, there are maybe 300 walking around tahrir waving islamiist flags and burning ours. Then you have the unemployed angry kids who will fight with the police at any opportunity. The VAST MAJORITY of egyptian muslims could not care less about this, and many are ashamed.

In the international media, that is all passed over, because the MOSLEM THREAT!!!! is much easier to spend 12 hours of studio time on that the complex economic and political reality. And I have to explain to worried relatives that they are being fooled. And it's annoying.

Probably the wrong thread for this. Long, frustrating day.

Serious question here.

Are the Egyptian people who are disgusted by this behavior willing to rat out the people who are willing to scale embassy walls and murder people?

/does not give two shiats about flag burning and yelling. Just real violence.

Couple things-

- The people who scaled the walls were actually the "Ultras," football fans/hooligans (depending on who you ask). For them it was all about beating the riot cops- long standing grievances from before and during the revolution, most notably the soccer riot in Feb that killed 74 of their members and is widely believed to have been in part a government set-up. Once they "won," they took down the flag, replaced it, danced on the wall a bit....and that was it. They had no intention of murdering anyone. They didn't even enter the compound.

- I think you are assuming a level of law and order here that does not exist. There is nothing like a neutral police force. Their is the highly politicized and decades old Central Security Force, 300k strong, and Mubarak's army for internal control. When they catch one of the "protestors" that are currently throwing rocks (the police throw them back...something i will never get used to seeing), they beat the crap out of them and maybe make them disappear. But yes, there have been sincere efforts by some Religious and Political leaders to stop the violence, sometimes in the media and sometimes by trying to physically interject themselves in the fight.

I don't speak arabic so can't get a great sense, but in general it is clear that people here realize how idiotic this is and how ridiculous it makes them look to the world. Sort of like our lunatic right. There is a real symbiosis there.

shower_in_my_socks: No terrorist tells the police where the bomb is so they can evacuate the area and defuse it. That defeats the purpose of making a farking bomb.

Unless they are targeting first responders. The best way to get every cop, fireman, and paramedic to a scene is call in a bomb threat and then it would be like fish in a barrel.

2012-09-14 03:57:22 PM

blockhouse: evaned: blockhouse: I'm not sure what qualifies this guy as a terrorist. Terrorists by definition attack civilian, non-governmental targets.

Disagree; if anything, I'd say terrorists attack civilian, non-military targets, but I'm not even sure you can to exclude that in all instances. For instance, I'd say McVeigh was most decidedly a terrorist, but his target was a government building.

If that's the case, then the distinction between the terms "terrorist," "revolutionary," "patriot," and "freedom fighter" start to erode very quickly. All popular uprisings and insurrections would fall under the definition of "terrorism," no matter how legitimate the grievance. Well, to be honest, the American Revolution was started by a bunch of dandies who didn't cotton to higher taxes on their luxury goods. It wasn't like the American colonies were being run like Iran, Iraq, or Libya.

From the standpoint of the monarchy, the revolutionaries were a bunch of terrorists who destroyed property and murdered British citizens and soldiers.
