Saborlas: Why don't the offended Muslims just make a video mocking Jesus and call it even?

I think every industrialized country should produce an offensive video about every religion and non-religion every week coupled with burning of every religious book including something from the Oprah book club for good measure.

In a few weeks no one will give a fark anymore and it would never be the source of outbursts of outrage again.

Usually when you flip flop, you don't flip to the "wrong" position you just accused your opponent of taking the day before.

I think he's trying to lose.

Such as "It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's Weeners was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks."?

I can't figure out what the hell Romney is doing either. I mean...he's gotta have a plan, right? some sort of coherent ideology that guides his actions anyways. hell if I can figure out what that ideology is or how it fits into his overall plan though.

Saborlas: Why don't the offended Muslims just make a video mocking Jesus and call it even?

I've had Muslim friends my whole life and they all seemed like perfectly normal people. And, from what I can tell, most of the Muslims in the Middle East are also perfectly normal people. But, Islam has a problem with its crazy people. Many Imams encourage their crazy people, I suspect, in pursuit of power...kinda like how the Republican party encourages its crazy people in pursuit of winning elections.

Anyhoo, I think this excerpt from Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job provides an pretty good analogue to what might happen if radical Muslims began trying to abuse Christianity:
In a way, Charlie started to enjoy the notoriety of being the guy with the cute little girl and the two giant dogs. When you have to maintain a secret identity, you can't help but relish a little public attention. And Charlie did, until the day he and Sophie were stopped on a side street on Russian Hill by a bearded man in a long cotton caftan and a woven hat. Sophie was old enough by then to do a lot of her own walking, although Charlie kept a piggyback kid sling with him so he could carry her when she got tired (but more often he would just balance her while she rode on the back of Alvin or Mohammed).

The bearded man passed a little too closely to Sophie and Mohammed growled and imposed himself between the man and the child.

"Mohammed, get back here," Charlie said. It turned out the hellhounds could be trained, especially if you only told them to do things they were going to do anyway. ("Eat, Alvin. Good boy. Poop now. Excellent.")

"Why do you call this dog Mohammed?" asked the bearded man.

"Because that's his name."

"You should not have called this dog Mohammed."

"I didn't call the dog Mohammed," Charlie said. "His name was Mohammed when I got him. It was on his collar."

"It is blasphemy to call a dog Mohammed."

"I tried calling him something else, but he doesn't listen. Watch. Steve, bite this man's leg? See, nothing. Spot, bite off this man's leg. Nothing. I might as well be speaking Farsi. You see where I'm going with this?"

"Well, I have named my dog Jesus. How do you feel about that?"

"Well, then I'm sorry, I didn't realize you'd lost your dog."

"I have not lost my dog."

"Really? I saw these flyers all over town with 'Have You Found Jesus?' on them. It must be another dog named Jesus. Was there a reward? A reward helps, you know." Charlie noted that more and more lately, he had a hard time resisting the urge to fark with people, especially when they insisted upon behaving like idiots.

"I do not have a dog named Jesus and that doesn't bother you because you are a godless infidel."

"No, really, you can not name your dog anything you want and it won't bother me. But, yes, I am a godless infidel. At least that's how I voted in the last election." Charlie grinned at him.

"Death to the infidel! Death to the infidel!" said the bearded man in response to Charlie's irresistible charm. He danced around shaking his fist in the Death Merchant's face, which scared Sophie so that she covered her eyes and started to cry.

"Stop that, you're scaring my daughter."

"Death to the infidel! Death to the infidel!"

Mohammed and Alvin quickly got bored watching the dance and sat down to wait for someone to tell them to eat the guy in the nightshirt.

"I mean it," Charlie said. "You need to stop." He looked around, feeling embarrassed, but there was no one else on the street.

"Death to the infidel. Death to the infidel," chanted the beard.

"Have you seen the size of these dogs, Mohammed?"

"Death to - hey, how did you know my name was Mohammed? Doesn't matter. Never mind. Death to the infidel. Death to the - "

"Wow, you certainly are brave," Charlie said, "but she's a little girl and you're scaring her and you really need to stop that now."

"Death to the infidel! Death to the infidel!"

"Kitty!" Sophie said, uncovering her eyes and pointing at the man.

"Oh, honey," Charlie said. "I thought we weren't going to do that."

Charlie slung Sophie up on his shoulders and walked on, leading the hellhounds away from the bearded dead man who lay in a peaceful heap on the sidewalk. He had stuffed the man's little woven hat in his pocket. It was glowing a dull red. Strangely, the bearded man's name wouldn't appear in Charlie's date book until the next day.

"See, a sense of humor is important," Charlie said, making a goofy face over his shoulder at his daughter.

Most of the protesters interviewed have never seen the video, or know exactly what's in it.

They just know they're angry, and they're told to be angry. Sound familiar?

This is the telling quote in the article:

She added that in America, "we do not stop individual citizens from expressing their views no matter how distasteful they may be."

This is an excellent op-ed on CNN on why that fact is important: Arab Spring nations don't yet grasp freedom of dissent...... as American's, we much of the time cannot grasp the concept that people in these other countries don't even really "get" that, just because this film was made, that doesn't mean "America" endorses it.... because in their countries, if someone is able to do something, it has to be implicitly endorsed by their leadership.

"I think the whole film is a terrible idea," he said. "I think him making it, promoting it showing it is disrespectful to people of other faiths. I don't think that should happen. I think people should have the common courtesy and judgment -- the good judgment - not to be - not to offend other peoples' faiths. It's a very bad thing, I think, this guy's doing."

Just out of curiosity, while we're on the topic of religious freedom, how would you feel about building a mosque near Ground Zero?

Don't you see that it is more important to beat your chest and harumpf during a crisis that to try to diffuse the conflict. Diffusion makes us weak. Chest beating makes us strong.

Romney's comments denouncing the film while simultaneously standing up for freedom of speech were nearly identical to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's statements in the wake of the deadly attacks on Libya and Egypt (although it is not yet clear in Libya how much the film contributed towards the crisis).

Identical? In only the most superficial sense. In her full comments you can see that she's trying to explain to these nutjobs that the US doesn't work the way their governments do. Ours has independent press. Ours allows free speech. It's a reality that people from the countries where these riots are occurring don't understand. Therefore, they don't get that we look at people like the maker of this film or Terry Jones and say, "We wish they'd knock it off, but it's not the role of the government to silence them."

Maybe if these countries HAD such freedom of expression they'd be less prone to farking riot and cause violence whenever they got their noses out of joint.

That is an important detail that Romney either doesn't understand or doesn't care to. All he's saying is "Film. Violence. Bad." Too little, too late. Especially given that he rushed to celebrate the violence because it potentially helps him.
