My total spend on apps with my Android phone of 18 months is about $10.

This is why a lot of app developers have given up on the Android market place. Too many different handsets / OS versions to support and the actual sales don't make up fo the effort.

Polaroid used to pull the same shiat, every year a "new and improved" model came out that folks just had to have.

I primarily use my phone for internet, which my Windows Phone kicks ass at. But if i could only get a droid phone with a stable browser app (that doesn't force close randomly, or forget what page i was JUST on when i leave the app to check something else) I'd totally switch back. The lack of apps on Windows Phone has been frustrating. Though, they are catching up very very slowly.

Rev.K: Carth: You're a lawyer studying for the bar? That one alone is a few hundred dollars. If you do a lot of statistical research the apps are also very expensive. Using a table or phone for any professional purpose and the cost of applications gets expensive really quick.

Fair enough. I know there are expensive apps out there, but your two example groups there are a pretty small portion of the app market population.

It would be interesting to see what the average spend is. I'm sure Apple has the data.

i was really curious about that a few months ago. The data out there isn't great but iOS users tend to spend more on games but the majority of people don't spend anything on apps. This says the people who do spend money on apps normally spend about 7.50 a month. So while not a lot still about $150 over a two year contract.

NowhereMon: I was actually thinking that if I were to buy a phone today, I'd probably go for the unlocked Nexus right from Google.

Personally I think I will do this as well in future. I love my Galaxy S2 LTE though so it won't be soon. LTE rocks if you can get it ... about a 7.5x speed increase for me. I had the Nexus One and that was a great experience until the power button failed (known issue with that model).

But going for the Nexus line gets around most of the issues that most people complain about: delay in updates, carrier bloatware, and unnecessary interface skins (offer them as an option if you want but don't force them on us (especially when they cause the delay in the upgrade)).

I just bought the Nexus 7 tablet and it is great. Although the down-side of having the first Jelly Bean device is that not all the apps are updated for this version yet.

it's a bigger step up than the 4 to 4S was, and the 4S sold a lot of phones, despite many 3GS users not upgrading to 'em

so my prediction is that 3GS users will upgrade, 4S users will keep their 4S's, people without smartphones will buy entry-level 4S's, and apple's stock will go above $700

That would actually be a big step in the right direction. I hate having to pay for voice minutes I never use. I use text messaging and data far more often. The few times I actually needed to talk to someone skype is fine.

There are actually some problems with the iPhone5 that are getting a little bit of coverage, though generally being drowned out by the hype.

1. No NFC. - Seriously, WTF Apple!
2. No simultaneous voice and data on CDMA carriers. Every LTE Android phone can do it, but Apple chose to reduce the number of antennas to get the device thinner and that eliminated this function. Since Verizon is throwing in free mobile Hotspot in their plans, it is going to suck that the data connection will drop when a phone call comes in.
3. The didn't plan to support the future LTE frequencies - specifically Vodaphones 4G LTE networks in the UK and beyond. They are being deployed right now and will be turned on in 1Q13. If you are a global roamer and use data, the iPhone 5 will be outdated at launch. Android LTE global devices have been ready for this rollout since 2011.

I had an iPhone 3G and then got an HTC EVO 4G. I have around $15 in apps on both. Maybe $20. Not enough to tie me to either platform.

I just switched my wife over to a Samsung Galaxy S3 from her old iPhone 4. Her biggest problem has been the songs she'd bought through iTunes directly on her phone and are now gone. There may be a way to re-download them through iTunes and then strip them of DRM if they have any and then load them on the new phone but.... it's probably as easy or easier just to "pirate" the shiat she already bought and use that. Which is the option I went with.

The new iThing. It makes the one you just bought look like a piece of shiat. Why do you still have that thing you paid $500 for? Give us $500 more so you can feel better about your purchasing prowess.

I've owned Apple products and phones since the second generation iPhone. I'm completely happy with their quality, and don't see a compelling reason to change to something else.

This is true for me but I contend that my hate is completely justified by Apple's choices and their policy of "our way is the only way".

Apple gives you no choice in: phone design (one size, no keyboard, etc.), the interface program you use (iTunes only), the store you use (App store only). Their attempts to control how I use my phone is offensive ... hence the hate.

Justified hate is different from blind hate. That may be difficult to recognize through your blind love.

Itunes songs don't have DRM anymore (if she bought them int he last few years). You can convert them to mp3 within iTunes and then upload them to Amazon, Google or whatever cloud music program you use.

Preorders of my bronzed dog turds sold out immediately.

Confabulat: I honestly don't get the fanboy nonsense. Is there anything the iPhone 5 is doing that my year-old Android can't do? What exactly? I can find more games and apps than I can ever use. And hell, Android, SD card, I can pretty much use anything I want on it which I find that Apple seems to frown on. This would annoy me often.

Because there's thousands (out of hundreds of thousands) of games and applications that are extremely well done and worth paying money for. I don't have a problem paying people for the work they do and don't expect all software to be free. I also don't balk at paying $1.99 for an app I may use for a week and beat it or move on to something else.

I'm meeting a fanboy later so it'll be interesting to see what his plans are in this respect.

As a Mac person, I really don't get the people who buy each new version of the iPhone. Maybe if we knew that there wouldn't be a new iPhone for at least two years I could understand wanting to have the improved functionality for that two year period (especially the LTE), but we do know that within a year there will be a better, faster iPhone.

I'm still using my 3GS that I bought in June 2009. While it's obviously no longer the hot new toy, it has served me well while the 4G and 4GS came out. But I will upgrade to the 5 because the battery is shot and performance has become sluggish.

I am the biggest Apple hater out there but the fact is that they had to get rid of that ancient, giant 30-pin connector. They should have joined the rest of the world at micro USB but that's Apple for you.
