I heard something about this on NPR a few days ago. Putin wanted to train the cranes to fly in their migratory path, but he wanted to start flying from a specific location. The endangered birds had to be shipped there in crates, and three of them died. Very dangerous thing to do for an endangered species.

Likewise, when he put a collar on the polar bear, they had to keep the bear on tranquilizers for three days before he arrived. Extremely dangerous thing to do to a wild animal. All so Putin could put the tracking color on it instead of one of the scientists already there.

Or this: "He also once shot a Siberian tigress with a tranquilizer gun so he could place a tracking collar around her neck. He patted the sleeping tiger's cheek affectionately as if she were a pet. A Russian environmentalist claimed later that the tigress died because Putin's security insisted on increasing the dose of the tranquilizer." Link
