The second one. Bullets - fake or not - hurt if someone throws them at you.

I would ask that the student leave that pen at home and let be the end of it. No need to dish out punishments over a misunderstanding.

Somebody might throw it in the furnace during shop class.

Or try using it to replace an auto fuse.

The pen insert goes in the shell casing. It's supposed to look like a .338 lapua. They are on amazon for $25. I already bought 5.

It's a promotional item Rockstar Games gave as a preorder bonus for Max Payne 3. I have a few of them. It's pretty realistic, but perfectly safe, really.

2012-09-14 06:52:31 AM
According to Amazon.com, this pen is 3.75" in length when closed, whereas the maximum CIP length for the .338 Lapua round is 3.6811". Any idiot should have noticed the difference and known that this wasn't a real round :)

Unless one pulled on the bullet portion to try and separate it form the casing, there is nothing to show that this is not a live round."

Except that there are no maufacturer's marks, or that it isn't the same weight, or that the 'bullet' is just as long as the cartridge, other than that, then no. Nothing.

I want to see what would happen if someone tried to chamber it. I bet that would show that it isn't a live round.

And if some student had shot up the school, the Fark brigade would be screaming about how stupid the teachers and administrators were for not doing anything when somebody found one of his bullets before the shooting.

So what? You know what would happen? The cartridge would eventualy rupture, tossing a few casing fragments about and launching the bullet all off three feet. Without a chamber to hold in the pressure against he cartridge and a barrel to force the gasses to push the bullet, that bullet ain't going anywhere.

Well, when a pen is designed, using spent casings, to look exactly like a bullet, I think it is understandable that people would assume that it was a bullet.

Usually when schools punish a student for bringing a weapon to school that isn't a weapon -- a fork, nail clippers, their own hand with index finger extended -- I take the side of the student. Too many schools overreact these days. But this is one time when I really hope the kid gets punished. This pen is designed to look like a bullet. He shouldn't be bringing that shiat to school. Suspend the idiot. (I do think police should be aware of what products are out there that look like weapons, and should be smart enough to check things out thoroughly before locking down a school.)

In other news, a school was shut down in Texas because someone brought in a bullet casing that looked like a pen.

Agreed. This is a deliberate simulation of a weapon, not merely something approximating a weapon. You shouldn't be taking it places you can't take a real bullet.
