I was a DC reader as a kid and as we were swapping comics one lazy afternoon I told a friend, a Marvel fan, I was surprised to see a major villain like Doctor Doom die in Fantastic Four 144.

He laughed.

I'm just hoping the make the sequel to X-men First class so we can learn what trauma cause professor X- to go from having an upper-class English countryside accent and a full head of hair to a bald Scotsman

Nevermind that. How did he go from being in a wheelchair with a full head of hair to being bald and walking in the flashback where he and Magneto meet Jean for the first time, to being in a wheelchair again?

Probably a result of the first time he died.

I'm glad I stopped reading comics when I was 13. Not that I think I'm mature or anything, it's just that they tend to, well do stuff like this. Repeatedly.

I rip them occasionally and sometimes don't even finish the arcs. I've been a comic fan for over two decades and still consider myself a comic book fan... I just don't like comic books. I don't know how to explain it.

Does anyone really fall for this any more? Even kids have instant access to the entire volume of comics now, which we didn't.

Surely no one sees 'x dies!' and thinks it'll last a week?

as one of my old teachers said, even though he was talking about Soap Operas, it's impossible to write a story that lasts 40 years without repeating yourself.

I know what you're saying. I like the concept of comic books and I go to comic cons and I love girls who are into comics and I appreciate the art and everything but it's not something that I can really follow on a steady basis.

The occasional graphic novel is cool though. Looking forward to the Dark Knight Returns DVD coming soon.

But yes, death in Comics is only temporary. he'll get better. Even if he doesn't get better soon, it's only one X-men series, and there are generally like 6 of them being published concurrently.

Mar-Vell was brought back for a bit in AvX.

Not only will he be able to walk, but have god-like powers. Maybe he even consumes the Phoenix and turns it into a pet.

Personally I think Patrick Stew... err.. Professor X deserve world-crushing powers.

Jean Grey: alive/dead
Wolverine: Has memory/amnesia

Didn't that stuff happen already with the Onslaught crap? X as uber-powerful and deadly? I missed most of the 90s-00s.

Different continuity. I was quite pleased by first class. X-men united was terrible; Scott died and it barely registered as an event. Thank God they went for a do over.

I don't care about this. What I do care about is that Elektra may finally be on a team book. Sure, it might be the Thunderbolts, and it may have Red Hulk leading it, but I don't care. Elektra will stab people multiple times.

That's odd, an anatomically impossible chick in thong, tons of pouches, ridiculous musculature, swords held wrong, and nary a foot to be seen, and yet Rob Liefeld's name is nowhere to be found on the cover. Please god, don't tell me he has imitators

How is she anatomically impossible OR holding the swords wrong? She's clearly getting ready to slice someone in the face with the katana.

Maybe you're looking for that catwoman thread.

As for the pouches....eh, I don't care.

That would be because it's Flash Thompson with the Venom symbiote.

I just got that from the press release, I don't really follow the venom 'character'

Imperious Rex!: How is she anatomically impossible OR holding the swords wrong? She's clearly getting ready to slice someone in the face with the katana.

Her anatomy is actually pretty good and not Liefeldian at all. The physics-defying ribbons on her costume are silly, but they look good on a cover. Or at least, they would, if not for the fact that they mostly end up blending into Red Hulk. At least they make compositional sense and do actually break up some negative space. That's stylistic. One has to wonder about the tactical sense of a skin-tight, ass-crack-flossing costume that has gigantic farking ribbons floating off of it, but whatever- it's a comic book.

The katana, on the other hand- that's bad. It's just floating out there in space. That's not a swinging motion, and you wouldn't swing a sword from that position. At best, you could say she's just keeping it out of the way so she can jab someone with the sai, but the way she's holding the sai means that she'd mostly end up driving the pommel into her own face, even as she stabs someone. Unlike the ribbons, there's no compositional reason for her to be attacking like that. If, on the other hand, she were holding only one weapon- the sword- in a stabbing position, and braced with two hands, it would not only look more dynamic, but better compliment the way the ribbons are breaking up the negative space.

On a vaguely related note, Castle's limp-wristed grip on the elephant gun is actually probably more annoying to my eye. It's lazy, sloppy, and doesn't convey a line-of-action in the same way that Deadpool's approach does.

I'm not even going to bother with the gun-wielding-not-Spiderman guy.

I hate temporary comic book deaths. If you're going to do ressurection make it have some sort of special meaning and be contained within the current story arc(like how the jesus myth has triumpth over death)

^ Really? That's....bizarre. Then again, there is a lot of weird shiat that goes down in comics.

All I really need to be satisfied is gratuitous violence meted out by a lady ninja. Nothing too complicated in that.

2012-09-13 09:55:40 PM
Okay, it's official: he's been killed/resurrected more times than Jean/Phoenix herself. More times than a character characterized by death and resurrection.
