Just a microcosm of America right there. A bunch of school children made to go sing a schmaltzy, jingoistic song pleading with a deity to be kind to the country on the anniversary of one of the most horrifying tragedies in its existence. And not at a monument to the memories of the fallen or a landmark of any kind, but in the parking lot of a consumer wonderland. Only to be turned away because in the end, the multinational corporation who's made its billions by undercutting small businesses and exploiting workers both foreign and domestic doesn't give a shiat.

It is inevitable, absolutely inevitable and probably no more than a few years away, that the first "9-11 Sale Event" is announced. Then stores will begin to compete with one another for earlier bargains, so we'll have Pre 9-11 Day Sales to deal with as well. 9-11 carolers represent merely one more step in that direction.

well yeah - we have to honor our corporate overlords somehow. why not sing them songs? it's the New America after all.

that aside, it doesn't surprise me that a company forgot about 9/11. corporations don't concern themselves with emotional attachments or the like. if something isn't part of the approved advertising campaign that month then it's not gonna happen on THEIR property. to a company, 9/11 is just another day like any other. they've got physical inventory to complete and final sales numbers to crunch before month end/end of quarter/end of fiscal year. singing? c'mon - that's just a distraction.

Time to RTFA. The miscommunication was not that Walmart had forgotten about "9/11". It was that the "manager" that had been contacted about the kids coming to sing had failed to let anyone else at that particular Walmart know. And he wasn't there on Tuesday. AND he is now fired.

I like the fact that walmart called the cops on the memorial service. that highlights the corporate response perfectly right there. people don't matter, WE don't matter. don't disrupt commerce, don't get in the way of the company....just STFU, buy things and go home.

I started giggling like a maniac.

Thanks for that image.

Then I thought of the kids standing their ground, then rioting, setting cars on fire and whatnot.

Basically, 1968 Chicago, complete with the kids running back into WalMart with cops in pursuit, firing teargas at will.

These kids today, with their Kidz Bop and their Dora and all that nonsense.
