I come back to Tehran in 1979, that if we're not careful here, we're going to see a repetition of that crisis which of course was a major factor contributing to the destruction of the Jimmy Carter administration," Bolton added.

You mean the armed response that had mechanical difficulties and got downed in a sandstorm, or the imaginary lack of response that people keep inventing for Carter? Pleas elaborate...

I and one of my older colleagues disagree on a number of things when it comes to politics and public policy, but one thing we agree on is that if that storm hadn't downed that team, the last 30 years would have been very, very different.

I tried to read a World War III novel that was written in the late 70s. It was sort of a proto-Tom Clancy book. The geopolitics were so vastly different I couldn't relate at all and gave up on it. The author kept referring to events in Carter's second term.

Antimatter: What's the over under on a GOP super PAC being behind the video and it's 9/11 promotion?

well I already thought that this was gonna trace back to Romney somehow (why else would he be smiling?) I'd give it a week before the first debate it comes out that either Romney or a GOP superPAC sent this out

theorellior: Felgraf: I *do* think Obama is gonna make him go stupid, because damn, Romney does not like people contradicting him, but... probably not THAT stupid.

I'm thinking there's a small but definitely non-zero chance that Romney will have a buffer overflow and just go stark raving bugfark.

I'd put the odds of that a lot higher than you'd think. Maybe... 7-1? A 12.5% chance of it happening? I can easily get behind that action. Mitt's not used to people correcting him.

And to pull this back to The West Wing, there's a plot line in the reelection episode where it looks like Bartlet is going to win the election but lose New Hampshire, and he's upset, because those are his people. Romney's most likely not only going to lose the state where he was governor, but also the state where his father was governor. That's got to sting a bit.

FlashHarry: i have a deep and visceral hatred for this man that i've never experienced with any other politician. i do believe that sarah palin is an appalling woman who represents everything wrong with america at the beginning of the 21st century - but romney... romney is just farking evil.

I really am disinclined to call people "evil" like that, but I think I agree with you. I'm honestly chilled by what I saw earlier when he was campaigning and made a brief mention of the crisis in Libya. He was smug and self-satisfied, basking in the glow of people chanting his name.

Most politicians have huge egos and varying motives for running for office, but I honestly think he is running for President simply because he can, and he wants to be President. I don't think he knows why he wants to be President beyond it being something he hasn't done yet. He scares me terribly, particularly because there are people who will actually vote for him.

I was 10 when that happened, but from when I first heard abut it, I've been trying to figure out the 'Carter never responded' crowd. They seem to have morphed into the current Republican Party, where anything is true, merely because a Republican stated it, and facts be damned.

And yeah, I can't even imagine how different things would be, had Reagan not gotten so lucky(And had he not pulled backroom shenanigans with Iran).

And they brought the boyfriends out, and they fought, right there on television. Toby, tell me: these people don't vote, do they?

17 across. Yes, 17 across is wrong... You're spelling his name wrong... What's my name? My name doesn't matter. I am just an ordinary citizen who relies on the Times crossword for stimulation. And I'm telling you that I met the man twice. And I recommended a pre-emptive Exocet missile strike against his air force, so I think I know how...

That line always pissed me off. Exocets are anti-ship missiles.

They're also French, and the US never bought any. Now, one could argue that Leo had recommended that the UK (or another ally) make the strike, but that's about as far as I can explain it. It bothers me, too.

Per wiki: Displaying the sole of one's foot or touching somebody with one's shoe is often considered rude. This includes sitting with one's feet or foot elevated. In some circumstances, shoes should be removed before entering a living room.

Um, no they are not part of the territory of the country using the consulate. Many consulates are rented office space.

Do you believe that if the Russian Consulate in LA desired to station a brigade of special forces there, and for the Consul to be transported in a heavily armed APC that the US would be compelled to allow it?

Keep talking Mitt. Just keep talking.

At this point, it's like watching Persians being drawn out to attack a retreating line of infantry, and suddenly realizing after they get there, that the cavalry has encircled them. He KEEPS running his mouth, instead of actually considering what to say before he gets the podium.

If the man can't even keep discipline in a campaign like this, how in the Hells do we expect him to actually run our government? Don't get me wrong, he has a lot of folks who stay on message, even when faced with idiocy at the podium, but there is a difference in backing your man no matter how stupid he gets, and actually leading. The shills are paid to generate support, but that is different than actually running the government, and having policies that work. There is a point where even a captive press has to look at a candidate and objectively assess their policies.

I'm not an international lawyer but the wiki tells me....

Contrary to popular belief, diplomatic missions do not enjoy full extraterritorial status and are not sovereign territory of the represented state.[5][6] Rather, the premises of diplomatic missions remain under the jurisdiction of the host state while being afforded special privileges (such as immunity from most local laws) by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Diplomats themselves still retain full diplomatic immunity, and (as an adherent to the Vienna Convention) the host country may not enter the premises of the mission without permission of the represented country. The term "extraterritoriality," therefore, is often used in this broader sense when applied to diplomatic missions.

But back on topic....

Bartlet: Apparently, I've arranged for an honor guard for somebody.
Toby: Yes, sir. I'm sorry.
Bartlet: No no. Just tell me, is there anything else I've arranged for? We're still in NATO right?
Toby: Yes, sir.
Bartlet: What's going on?
Toby: A homeless man died last night; a Korean War veteran, who was wearing a coat that I gave to the Goodwill. It had my card in it.
Bartlet: Toby, you're not responsible for ...
Toby: An hour and twenty minutes for the ambulance to get there. A Lance Corporal, United States Marine Corps, Second of the Seventh. The guy got better treatment at Panmunjom.
Bartlet: Toby, if we start pulling strings like this, you don't think every homeless veteran would come out of the woodworks?
Toby: I can only hope, sir.
