So Apple should have made a phone with shiat for battery life using the power sucking first generation of chips that supported 4G like the other idiots did thereby pissing off their customers?

The lackluster battery life of 4G-capable phones is dragging them down in consumer ratings, according to data collected by J.D. Power and Associates. The company noted dissatisfaction with battery life "greatly impacted" customers' satisfaction with their smartphones. Because of that, owners of first-generation 4G smartphones are some of the least happy customers out there.

By waiting for the new low power version of LTE baseband, Apple was able to create a phone that is smaller, lighter, and gets better battery life than the 3G phone they sold last year.

Customer satisfaction is more important than checking a box in the specs if you want to be successful in the long term.

people like what they like and tend to stick to brands. I get that. Average consumer will go for what their friends suggest.
Personally, I've got a Nexus and am seriously contemplating grabbing a Win 8 phone in October . I'm interested in seeing how far the platform has come and how it stacks up to the heavy weights these days.

But it is a compelling reason to trade up from my 3GS. I think a lot of people go on a 2 or 3 year cycle, not 1 year (obviously, there are exceptions), and with the 3GS being end-of-lifed yesterday I think it's time to make the jump.

This comment from one of the Ars Staff in that article was not unusual: "I used a 4G LG Revolution for a couple weeks last year. In the two weeks it worked (before it forced me into a factory reset and I returned it) the battery life would drain 10% an hour even when I wasn't using it."

All day battery life isn't something you need to apologize for deciding is a requirement.

Between Android 4.1.1 devices, iPhone 5, and Win 8 / Lumia 920, this fall has a lot of great devices. It's a good time for smart phones. I just don't know which one to get, though!

After a couple of months of lacklustre sales the phone companies here started GIVING the thing away with the usual plan options. On the lower end plan options it was dirt cheap. I'd waited and when I saw that, I snapped one up.

I'll only get a 5 if the same thing happens. I like some of the new features.

It seems toys and software have both pretty much hit the wall. MS Word has been the same piece of crap for years now - all they do with new releases is move stuff around in the GUI and add more senseless features. Even great programs like Photoshop have just become an exercise in one or two "wow" new features but not much else.

Now it's all about connectivity among similar devices in the 'family'. Apple hopes you at LEAST have a laptop or an iMac, as well as an iPhone and an iPad ... so much of the new gizmos can all talk to each other and auto-update.

Samsung, Google and MS don't have any direct link to devices to play the connectivity game.

Another "meh" release by Apple. That screen size and ratio looks an awful lot like most Android phones out there. I hope Apple gets their asses sues by the rest of the collective market for infringing on the screen sizes used by everyone else.

Last year's iPhone 4S was rated for six hours of browsing over 3G.

The iPhone 5 is rated for 8 hours of browsing over LTE despite being thinner and lighter.

Meanwhile, the Droid RAZR Maxx with it's enormous extended battery (using the last generation LTE chipset) only tested out at 293 minutes which works out to not quite five hours of web browsing over LTE.

Windows live is an attempt at cross-Xbox/PC/phone/tablet with win8 and winP8

Google has chrome, which crosses multiple devices and even shares bookmarks and active pages. (using I to type this on my iPhone right now).

Samsung is trying to put Facebook in my refrigerator. Which is dumb. But not as dumb as the cars with twitter and facebook. Stop farking posting and watch the farking road!!!

Apple is a brand...that happens to sell technology. They could have pumped out another 3G phone and people would still have lined up to buy it. The people waiting for the iphone5 were never looking to get the galaxy s3...it was never an option. The s3 could have a perpetual motion battery...and the apple people would be like, "yeah...but apple is better. It just works...."

I am in the market right now. My wife has a 4S, I have a Samsung Focus. It is indeed a good time for smartphones. The iPhone 5 looks like a beautiful piece of hardware, and the Nokia 920 is really a nice looking phone. There are a lot of good looking Android phones as well (One X). My biggest gripe about the iPhone isn't even about the iPhone, it is iOS. iOS needs a pretty big refresh. A lock screen with some actual status information would be nice. What I mean is that I press the button to wake up the device and I should see time, next appointment (not just the next alert), messages and maybe weather. Windows phone gives me most of these (no weather), Android can give me all. iOS gives a little. I am also used to the quick glance at live tile tiles. You can do some of this with Android, customizing your home screen. Once again, iOS is lagging here.

On the hardware front, the lack of a dedicated back button hurts. On the iPad, the multi-finger gestures get me this after a fashion, but there is no analog on the iPhone. "Double-tapping" to home to bring up the program list is nice, but on my Focus, i just hold the back button for task switching. On android, it is even better, holding Home gives me a list of open programs that will expand to fit the screen, not just a strip at the bottom.

That being said, the iPhone still is pretty much the best looking hardware of the bunch. But that gap isn't what it used to be back when i had an iPhone 3S and everyone else was an also ran.

Anyways I'm upgrading - I held out on the 4S because of lack of LTE. I love my 4 but could use some more speed.

I buy iPhones for the OS. Granted the phones don't have the latest and greatest - but I like the "it just works" mentality. Because in the end - the most important thing for me is that I can rely on my phone to always work.

My 4g Samsung Galaxy S2's battery last all day. I guess they "copied" that from Apple, though. I have to listen to Pandora and play games to get it to drain. Oh, and I bought it last year... before the iPhone 4 came out... and it was available to the international market for like a year before thats.

And don't be so proud of the iPhone's battery when it has a comparitively under-powered processor, and smaller screen than other phones. You know what I could do if I didn't want to mid-day charge? I could "replace the battery". "Replacing the battery" is an advanced technology... iGeeks probably wouldn't have heard about it.

While a list of open programs rather than a strip would be really nice, I like the double-tap over holding - it's faster. I can double tap in less than a second, but you have to hold the button for two seconds.

I can't disagree on the speed, but for me the "hold" is easier since I can more easily do it while holding the phone with one hand.

I think he's right. There is a company that has incorporated charging technology into products to make it truly wireless. IE just place the phone near your computer and it will begin charging. No need for it to be on or near a mat.(Good stuff around the 9 minute mark). That is the future of wireless charging - imagine not having to ever replace the batteries in your wireless keyboard.

If something like that becomes standardized and is incorporated into bedside lamps etc - it would be a benefit to everyone and more simple to use.

That's my biggest complaint with iOS. Jailbreaking and adding LockInfo makes it pretty damn good, but jailbreaks (especially on new hardware) can take time.

I'll probably update to the new iPhone after they release the unlocked contract free version. No LTE on Straight Talk, but I mostly use wifi anyway.

Your whole argument seems to be iPhone is best because it has great battery life. That's probably about 4th or 5th on importance on most people's lists.
