Why don't we shoot people who invade our embassies?
It is like someone invading your home, you should be able to shoot them before they hurt someone.

Here's the quintessential irony of events like this for me.

Someone makes a film about how Islam has a historical problem with violence.

Religious fundamentalists become incensed at being so disparaged that they haul off and act like violent lunatics.

Funny stuff.

/Not the good kind of funny, no.

Cpl.D: I thought they equipped all US embassies with that active denial system. It really would've been helpful, here.

One of my RSOs was wishing for one a few months ago. He said he wanted to try the "brown note" on some of these people.

Kittypie070: They are fellow human beings, not commodities,

If animals can be commodities, so can humans. In fact, it's better if it's humans (except for food because prions) as you can explain things to humans in a way that they can make the educated choice to undergo whatever it is we need them for.

You can probably dig up some crazy people to take experimental drugs at high doses to asses safety. I don't think you can find mice who can consent to that.

That doesn't mean the person you were replying to wasn't being a full on idiot, but humans are the only animal capable of being a commodity ethically. All the others must be assumed to be doing so against their will.

Because it makes some FARKers cry and write the word *SLAP* in big letters.

/and that's worse than being beaten to death by Libyans who are "carrying you to the hospital"

Here's a modest proposal:

This whole thing comes about because many Muslims don't understand the concept of freedom of speech, and of how little attention most Westerners pay to that speech.

Because so few things are said at all in the Muslim world, anything that's said is considered very significant. In the West, it's completely the opposite: many things are said every day, and nobody pays any attention to them. Who had even heard of this obscure film in the West before the attacks?

Obviously Islam is a special case, so what I propose is that the US government should make a deal with Muslims (maybe organize some referendums in different countries) - and the choice is that either everything is kept as it is, or the US amends the constitution to forbid any criticism of Islam AND ALSO to forbid any positive or neutral mention of Islam in public places. That would be fair.

Or perhaps just block all American internet traffic (such as Youtube) from reaching any Islamic countries, that would also get the job done. If they don't want Western communication (and the values that go with it), they can live without.

rev. dave: It is like someone invading your home, you should be able to shoot them before they hurt someone.

Somewhat this.
It's why I can't take people who decry the black bloc tactic in protest movements/Occupy seriously. "You're excusing a crackdown by the cops", "you're endangering peaceful protesters". 1) No, the cops were gonna crack down to begin with, you don't wait until they start shooting to take action. It's like the idiots who cried about "premature antifacism" at the people beating fascist ass in the streets in the early/mid 30s. 2) The black bloc usually functions as the buffer between peaceful protesters and police beatings.
Not to mention it's somehow okay to label defensive action violent. "Oh man they're throwing tear gas canisters that the police shot back at them so protesters can breathe and aren't hospitalized by chemical weapons and the Oakland PD gets a taste of their own terrorism, what domestic terrorists!."
Granted, shooting into the rioting crowd probably won't tactically end well (just like the BB isn't always a great tactic for the situation) but I agree with you in principle.

TappingTheVein: Wittenberg Dropout: I bet jews did this.

Latest news indicate that it is an Egyptian Copt christian from California. Makes sense because the "film" depicts muslim violence specifically on Christians, at least the scenes I've seen.

As if muslims needed an excuse to murder and burn stuff on 9/11 anniversary. There are indications that the attack on the Benghazi consulate was pre-planned, the movie was a lame excuse.

There are indications? There are also indications that the sun revolves around the earth, but sources say that's not true. It could be true - or not - that there are a series of planned attacks going on, but someone from the U.S. government needs to go on the record, and with a good argument, and end this whisper campaign. The 9-11 timing is the only thing that smells a lot like preplanning.

If you haven't you should read the book "See no Evil" by Robert Baer, who was a CIA agent in that region at that time. It provides some interesting insight into what was going on and what we did or didn't do about it. It should be required reading for anyone with a hand in planning our response.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Why the hell you accept a diplomatic posting in Yemen?!

Good luck guys.

A friend told me once that Yemen was his favorite posting. Another one's teen daughter reminisces fondly over Eritrea. Every year it's a fight to see who gets to go to Baghdad. Why? Danger, excitement, a sense of purpose ("we're the good guys!") and danger pay (though taxes eat most of that).
My old boss is talking about leaving Bangkok for one more tour in Iraq. Why? He loves being able to get stuff done, and places like that give him a license to do that.

BullBearMS: Hmmm... There was an interesting theory being discussed on Slashdot the other day.

whenever the UN's food price index, which measures the monthly change in the price of a basket of food commodities, climbs above 210, the conditions ripen for social unrest around the world.

(Said the researchers behind the study) "on December 13, 2010, we submitted a government report analyzing the repercussions of the global financial crises, and directly identifying the risk of social unrest and political instability due to food prices." Four days later, Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire as an act of protest in Tunisia.

Today, the food price index is hovering around 213, where it has stayed for months-just beyond the tip of the identified threshold.

Wow! I never thought about that, but it makes a LOT of sense. Thanks for that link.

Some retards make an awful video and post it on YouTube. Some other retards react badly to it. It's a circle of stupid. But for anyone convincing themselves that this is all planned by a sinister cabal of bearded men somewhere, get a grip. Time and again we've seen fundamentalist Muslims riot over what some yokel has done. The Muhammad cartoons, the Koran burnings, and now this. You've got a lot of angry, listless young men whose religion and culture forbids any sort of normal stress relief like booze or women. So when someone tells them to be outraged, they're all for it.

Well, I'm sure the bad guys timed this the way they did because they want to help Obama get elected, on account of he's so "soft" on terrorism. They are terrified that a courageous genius like Mitt Romney might get elected, so they timed this to help Obama.
That's the ticket.
