Excellent call. Pharaoh deserves it.

Pharoah joined the show in 2010, and has since stood out for his impressions of Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy and Will Smith.

I dunno. To me, his impressions of Denzel, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith and Obama all sound the same. They sound like Pharoah.

Oh well, can't be any worse than Armisen. And at least Sudekis will still be around.

Originally, the writers seemed to try to shake things up and find humor from unpredictable angles. It was hilarious that Chevy Chase's impression of President Ford made absolutely no attempt to either look like nor sound like the President.

But during the Tina Fey years, their approach became so weak and formulaic that I challenged somebody to find a single show during the W Bush years that did not contain at least one joke that could be boiled down to 'Bush is dumb'. I lost the challenge, because there was exactly ONE show that fit. It was the first show back after 9/11. Other than that single episode, every Fey show had one lame Bush is dumb joke and a large number of them revolved around a series of the same joke.

I get it, Fey thinks bush is bumb.

Bring back the surreal. Kaufman on stage singing one line of the Mighty Mouse theme! James Brown in a Hot Tub! Wayne's World, Guido Sarducci

The first I'll grant you, the second is pretty absurdist, but Wayne's World and Guido Sarducci aren't really surreal. Though I do wish SNL took a lot more chances.

Yes, Will Ferrell's impression of Bush was truly the low point of SNL.

Are you on crack?

Thats their problem. Too p.c. and afraid to piss anybody off. There is SOO much they could do/go after but don't. It also seems like the cast doesn't improvise or only reads off of que cards. I remember the 1990 cast as the best ever and those guys were constantly trying to mess with each other, which made them even better.

Fun fact: SNL is the highest-rated scripted show on NBC. Not just in late-night, on the entire network. By the end of last season, only The Voice and Sunday Night Football had better ratings than SNL.

I don't know, man. I still think SNL has its moments. I can watch an episode and still get a handful of laughs. I think people get nostalgic about certain eras of the show, and expect it to be as funny as it was when they were younger. My dad swears by the original cast (which was great), but my favorite era was the Farley/Sandler/Spade stuff. People younger than me love the Ferrell/Fallon lineup. It's generational, I suppose.

Jimmy Fallon is so much of whats wrong with America

wantedbadass: Bottom line is that SNL has always been terribly hit and miss. If you watched full episodes of the 70s-90s, you'd realize that you only remember the very best stuff and forget all the trash that was in between.

Yep. I got the first few seasons on DVD a while ago, and while there are a lot of great classic skits, there are a lot of misses as well.

Given that the most popular character currently on the show (Bill Hader's Stefon) is a bit based entirely on him "ruin[ing] the punchline by laughing," yeah, I can see that.

Though I did find Fallon's inability to keep it together to be annoying.

Yeah, I'm sure somebody does, and I can't say I wouldn't have thought he was funny if I was 12 when he was on. On a side note, I tend to find myself watching his late night show every now and then. I've realized that I REALLY like his show, but not him. The Roots make it fun.

Yup. Every episode, since day 1, has been 1-2 good skits surrounded by 70 minutes of filler. Watching an episode is always like panning for gold -- you're sifting through tons of sludge just to find the occasional nugget.

All those classic skits from the first 2-3 years of the show? You can think of 15-20 of them, right? Yeah, that's across like 50 episodes. Same thing for the Carvey/Hartman years, and so on.

As time passes, you tend to keep remembering the good skits and forget the filler -- 10 years down the road, you can't remember an unfunny skit off the top of your head. Consequently, the older shows seem better and better as the years go on.

Doubt that is a concern. The suits at NBC were forced into the Conan farking debacle by how much money and power they had given Leno in that primetime show deal and they are still paying for it. no way do they want to give him more now.

They can't get rid of him but they don't want any more of him.

Music is like that too. There was lots of crap music in the 60s-70s-80s and 90's too, those aren't the ones you remember. You remember the good stuff. 20 years from now the kids of today will remember the 1out10 good songs released today and wonder how the kids of 2032 can listen to the crap they do
