(Major League Baseball)   It has been said that the Orioles have been doing it with smoke and mirrors all year. Well, here's a little magic trick that Manny Machado conjured up for Rich Thompson   (mlb.mlb.com) divider line 85

That's how they keep winning all their one-run games.

Incredibly intelligent play by a 20 year-old rookie playing his 33rd professional game at third base, all of them this season (and 31 just since being called up).

And then of course he singles to lead off the bottom of the ninth & ends up scoring the winning run.

farkin'-A, Rays, you couldn't do your neighbors a solid and win this one?

I have this nagging sensation in the back of my mind that the whole AL East situation this year is karmic retribution for the hijinks of the last day of the season last year.

As long as the Yankees lose out, I'm fine with the Rays or Orioles, good for both of them. Competing against the largest payroll in MLB history and damn near might pull it off.

Yeah, they don't have the largest payroll in MLB history.

One question...were there two outs? Was the batter a fast or slow guy? If there were fewer than two outs or the batter was fast, then this was probably a good play. But if there was a chance to get the batter at first, why fake the throw and take the chance on the runner rounding third?

whatever they are doing good for them.
hope they dont knock my yanks out tho.

Ohhh - it all makes sense now. This whole season has actually been a movie. That's the only way that this sort of thing works

that was pretty much my thought....I guess it does depend on how fast the batter/runner is, as the ball was hit slowly and Machado was going to have to make an off-balance throw...good play though.

/have seen it many times in fast-pitch softball, but don't recall ever seeing the fake throw/tag the runner at third in baseball though

There were 2 outs but Machado had little to no chance to throw out the guy at first. He was playing back and it was a slowly hit ball. In his post-game comments he even said that he was actually initially trying to make the throw but realized he had no shot.

Machado is amazing. I'm really excited about the O's and Baltimore as a whole. The Orioles are doing a great job--- and they are really young team. I hope that this is just the start to the way it's gonna be.

What an awesome game. I farking love fall baseball.

Since my Indians are a forgone conclusion, I shall cheer for the Orioles.

Watch the video again. Around the 55 second mark the video is from a different angle that shows Longoria is maybe 4-5 steps from first by the time Machado bare-hands the ball. They were playing back (can't see Machado but Hardy was just inside the outfield grass), the hit was a slow chopper & if memory serves Longoria is reasonably fast on the base path. I was also impressed with the execution on the pickle. It's something that every MLB team should do well but that doesn't always happen; I thought this one was near perfect.

Machado is impressive; I'm expecting big things from him in the future.

// Go O's hon!

Wow. You have to appreciate that. Plus the Rays are smart players that always seem to pull through in those situations. Its nice to see someone turn their aggressive style against them, and even better that it was a rookie.

The Rays, to their credit, actually spoke very positively of Machado's awareness on that play during their post-game comments.

it was really his only play. equally smart play by Hardy to get over there.

imagine if the playoffs are:

O's
White Sox
Rangers
A's
Rays

Nats
Reds
Giants
Phillies
Brewers

yes, that does assume a huge Braves collapse. stranger things have already happened this season.

I hate the Rays. They always beat my team despite the facts that they have a lesser payroll, great players who don't talk trash or play dirty, a great manager (I don't care that he whines), and they never give up in a game. I can't not respect the team on the field or front office. I hate them because their fans farking blow. That team deserves better.

2012 Yank's payroll 197 M

No, but he only played 2 games at 3B in the minors. He is a shortstop. Read it again.

I'm just happy the O's don't end the season in Fenway. They end it in Tampa. Possibly with division and/or wild card on the line.

The best part is during the second run-through in the Rays' broadcast (Sun Sports), where you can clearly see the third base coach yelling "get back!" just before the throw to Hardy. :)

The O's can clinch their first non-losing season since 1997 with a win today. :)

There were two heads-up plays there. P. A. system presciently played "Sad Trombone" for the befuddled and bamboozled Rays.

For reals? I cursed that thing so often on CTVOlympics.ca last month...

Also, I couldn't get the MLB video to play in Safari (no prob on Chrome), whereas the Olympics vids would crash Chrome, but play passably on Safari.

Imagine Fox Sports Executives having to be talked down from the ledge at the very thought of a Rays vs Reds World Series.

Reds/Rays would actually be a v. interesting Series.

They're 6 outs from being swept. The Yankees laid down for them last year, and this is how they repay them.

Jennings walks to lead off the 8th for the Rays. Upton-Zobrist-Longoria due up.

2012-09-13 03:21:04 PM
Jennings moves to 2nd on a passed ball, then steals 3rd. Tying run on 3rd for the Rays with 1 out in the 8th

2012-09-13 03:23:54 PM
And Zobrist ties it with a single!

/I still can't believe that I have to pull for the Orioles to lose

2-2 bottom of the 8th with the top of the order coming up for the O's. Damn I hate watching statistics on a website, but the radio gets no reception where I'm sitting.

MLB Gameday isn't bad for times like this. It's gotten me through many, many day games while I sit at work

Yeah, I'm a fan of Gameday. A lot of times, I'll even have it up on my computer while I watch the games on TV. It's a nice quick boxscore to look at, and it lets you glance at both team's benches/bullpens. And when I can't watch the game, I can still get the pitch speed, break, and location. It's pretty nice

I just found out that they have a widget that has the box score (R/H/E) for my droid. makes it easy to keep up with the O's without always being accused of "always being on my phone"
