First rule:

Never let a pit-bull off a leash. They will kill other animals. That is what they are bred to do. This woman is what is giving pits their bad reputation.

As a dog owner, I have to say that people who let their dogs off the leash just piss me off. If you really feel the need to let your dog run around unfettered, buy a house and fence in the yard or find a good no-leash dog park.

Even in my neighborhood people walk their dogs off-leash and if it wasn't so aggrivating it'd be funny watching people eventually have to pull their dogs off people or other pets. Taking your dog off leash in a public area is just asking to be sued.

Doesn't matter what kind of dog it is, they can all bite.

Pit Bulls however have a serious problem with stuff like this.

Stupid lady deserved to get kicked in the face. I'd charger her with letting the dog lose, and bill her for all of the officers medical bills, and all of the vet bills for the horse.

My thoughts:

1. The police named the horse AAA Andy so it would be first in the yellow pages; and

2. Who in the hell says, "That buggering dog is coming back!" Buggering???! I call shenanigans.

I was listening to this story last night. Very amusing. I'd like to know why anyone with any brain cells would bring their pitbull to a public area without a leash. Asking for trouble.

2003-11-24 12:33:23 PM
I'd paid a dollar to see that.

2003-11-24 12:33:23 PM
Good thing the cop ended it before the horse got pissed off. Most horses will try to run away if they're being attacked, but if it doesn't work, the hooves start flyin'. That damn dog woulda had a lot more than a bullet wound to worry about...

I actually learned about sex from watching neighbohood dogs...which is good because animals are very instinctual, and the most important thing I learned was...

...never let go of the girl's leg, no matter how hard she tries to shake you off.

Nighthawk_NS:

Part of it is the training and discipline, but with pits, the breeding and genes control their desire to chase, hunt down and kill other things. Some can't help this, so owners must control them.

2003-11-24 12:36:21 PM
The problem with pitbulls is not the bite, its the fact that they won't let go.

2003-11-24 12:39:01 PM
Pitbulls need to put down. They're just destructive animals.

ranch111, "First rule:
Never let a pit-bull off a leash."
First thing I saw this morning when I walked outside for work was....a pit bull OFF the leash next to it's owner. Not good for a neighborhood full of dog people. Glad my dog wasn't with me. He's big but would have been torn to shreds. I hate ignorant people.

Nighthawk_NS, "ranch111 It's all about the upbringing, not the breed."
That of course is ignoring the last 300-400 years of selctive breeding for this breed. Again, I hate ignorant people.

2003-11-24 12:41:44 PM
I have family and friends who readily claim their pitbulls and rots are fine family dogs - good with kids. I've heard the same claim about Chows. It may be unfounded and unfair, but when the time comes for us to get a new family dog, it will not have any of these aformentioned breeds in it. I'm not trying to be a snob or reactionary - but when it comes to the safety of my kids, I simply will not take ANY chances.

NOTE: Again, I realize most any breed dog can go apesheet given the circumstances... I just cannot shake the negative imagery/bias.

I'll guess Colonel Mustard, in the Conservatory, with a black pit bull.

Also, if the whole event took 45 seconds and covered the space of 1/2 a mile, then the pit bull ran at least 40 miles an hour. scary

Pit Bulls are about the most loyal and wonderful dogs you can get. They are smart and strong. Every documented case of a Pitbull attack is not without pre-existing conditions such as abuse or mal-nutrition. You will never find a Pit with a good owner having problems unless provoked.

That seems like one smart horse, dealing immediate justice to the owner of the dog, then hauling-ass.

I can't believe they have to decide whether to charge this woman. She broke the law. And the consequences included injury to a police officer. Hello??

What IS it with SF dog owners? This reminds me of that Canary mastiff case. Same stupidity: own an aggressive animal, and don't worry if you can't control it. Maybe her pit bull wouldn't attack a kid -- but dogs are carnivores, hard-wired to chase things, and it still would attack a police horse.

"You will never find a Pit with a good owner having problems unless provoked."

Excuse the pun, but... bull. The lousy beast that attacked my innocent pet was not abused in anyway. Sure, other dogs attack cats too, but come on- it's obvious. Pit bulls suck. Rottweilers too.
