During the school year, I couldn't stay up late enough to watch it, so I programmed the VCR to tape it every week.

Holy shiat, I do not miss programming a VCR at all.

I stayed up way too late watching that program when I was younger. But it was so worth it.

I miss 120 minutes...and Liquid Television...and Sifl and Olly....

The night before I left for the Army, during the reign of Reagan The Magnificent, I went to a house party where we all watched MTV on cable TV, which was very, very rare at the time. I think there may have only been 7 or 8 video's, and some of those were recut variety show appearances.

2012-09-12 11:16:02 PM
Meh. The best 120 minutes of MTV was all Liquid Television. And they already have that available for streaming. So keep your DVD.

Now I need to go listen to Sugar.

And I'm betting one of them was Herbie Hancock "Rock it"

Can't put 'giddy, pubescent, hiding from parents while up too late on a school night, in lust with peter murphy and bjork' on a DVD.

Don't try.

the other one was Lewis Largent saying circa June 1993 that the Smashing Pumpkins' new album would change rock

and the other was Beck ansswering a shiattty old phone during an interview, throwing it against the wall, and the host saying, "uhhhh.....we are here with Beck!"

and the other that lame GnR video with Axl swimming with dolphins.

That was later, 83 or 84. I recall it was Bowie, The Buggles, Devo(?) and Blondie. Kiss, maybe? This was Reagan v1.0.

holy shiat......

this doesn't show it but i swear at one point Beck picks up one of those horrid beige phones and "takes" a call then throws it against the backdrop.

I forgot Thurston Moore was hosting the interivew but yeah, that happened.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers when they were still good!

Looking forward to this. I've been on a huge 80s/early 90s college rock kick lately.

Shameless, uh, plug. I created a playlist on Spotify based on the first ten years of 120 Minutes (the first year being the final year of Cutting Edge I believe). Link

This. Loved Kevin Seal.

Used to sit and watch it with my thumb on the VCR's record button. Still have hours of tapes in the garage along with a bunch of AMP and Liquid TV stuff. Good times. Kids today don't even remember a time when MTV didn't utterly suck.

2012-09-13 01:10:18 AM
As an angsty teen, I had a friend give me a couple taped episodes of "120 Minutes".

There were so many great videos. I can remember watching it live in the 90's and that's how I discovered new bands.

The last time I ever watched MTV was the when I turned it on to find out 120 had been cancelled.
The list of bands they gave spotlights to is too long to list
They Might be giants, R.E.M, Nirvana and many more

2012-09-13 02:41:59 AM
The article is not about the "Best of 120 Minutes." This is the Best of "The Cutting Edge" series, which started long before 120 Minutes came along.

The alternative music ghetto was awesome when Kevin Seal hosted it. His interview with Johnny Rotten was classic.

There are a lot of good bands on that list but let's be real The Blasters are the best of the bunch.

"the days when bands were good and MTV showed music"... nearly half of the airtime (zit-cream commercials providing the balance) between the hours of midnight and 2:00am every Monday.

Did they actually make a live version of that show or was just a fan pic.

Awesome nonetheless.

Damn straight. The two LOUDEST shows I've ever seen had Mike Watt on bass. firehose opening for the Beastie Boys and MW on bass for J Mascis. I think my ears may have bled both times.

Seeing Watt next month for the second time. So pumped.

He is such a cool guy. Took time to sign my record and have me stand their and stammer.

He's pretty awesome. I saw him with J Mascis and I swear it was better than seeing Dinosaur Jr with the original lineup.

You folks (and failmitter) do realize that this has nothing to do with 120 Minutes, but rather I.R.S. Records Presents The Cutting Edge, right?

Just wanted to be one of the few people in this thread who knows that the headline is totally wrong. This is the best of "The Cutting Edge" not the best of "120 Minutes".
