The only people in my experience that utterly hate it are Apple people, since Apple decided they were going to kill Flash all on their own. To everyone else, it's one of those things they don't realize is there until it crashes.

Onscreen Alphabetic KeyboardsThe QWERTY keyboard layout has been around since the 1870s. Sure, it's an anachronism in many respects, but we're used to it. Everyone knows what a keyboard should look like. So it's completely confusing that Apple and Microsoft insist on using on-screen keyboards for Apple TV and Xbox 360 that place the letters in alphabetical order. Hey guys, look at keyboard before building on-screen interfaces.

I don't agree with this one. The only reason QWERTY works so well is that your fingers get used to the location of every key, to the point where even if you don't remember where it is, your fingers will. If you're having to select each letter individually, having it ABC format is easier to locate.

I also may get the Hornit just because it sounds awesomely annoying.

don't forget that he seems to think the media distribution should be done on thumb drives because they are "cheap". Sure a couple of dollars isn't bad for a small one purchased on a large scale but it is hundreds of times more expensive than optical media that is also purchased in bulk.

Let's not even bother to touch on the security issues inherent with thumb drives (yes I know they also exist in the CD/DVD world too).

A long time ago a company named Macromedia released Flash.

At the risk of showing my age:

A really long time ago, a company called FutureWave released a product called FutureSplash. This product was eventually acquired by Macromedia because it was much easier to use than Director/Shockwave, which was Macromedia's competing product. The product was renamed, "Flash".

I dunno, I rather like CD-Rs/DVD-Rs, but then I like having write-once disks for backups of critical files.

I don't really have a problem with wall-warts, though I really wish that more devices would standardize on connectors (like microUSB and mobile phones), voltages, and currents. Considering how bloody tiny they can make switching power supplies these days, having Big Chunky Adapters for low-current devices makes little sense. Also, would it kill them to put a $0.05 regulating circuit on the power supplies? Wireless charging for common devices like mobile phones would be handy, for sure, but how do they propose that other electronics get the DC power they require?

Electric ranges are awesome: I can set mine to a precise number (which corresponds to output power) and things are golden. Then again, I do have this range which is quite nice. Only disadvantage is that it is made out of that glass-ceramic stuff which is annoying to clean when stuff gets baked on. It also scratches a bit. Electricity gives me a lot more flexibility than just gas: electricity can be generated from numerous sources (nuclear, hydro, wind, gas, coal, etc.) while gas appliances require gas.

Wires offer far better performance than wireless connections. Yes, 802.11g/n is fast enough for most stuff around the house and is hugely convenient and clutter-free, but in a radio-noisy environment like an apartment building with lots of other Wi-Fi users, having a wired network is nice. Pushing a few hundred gigabytes over a wireless link is painful -- transferring a disk image to my home storage system over 802.11g would have taken ~10-15 hours and had variable, unpredictable speeds. It finished in about 30 minutes over gigabit ethernet.

Quite a bit of "I don't use this, so no one else needs it" and "some people misuse it so it must be eliminated" but I'll focus on two of the most egregious failures:

Electric ranges: News flash... not every household in America has natural gas service, and electric won't blow up your entire apartment building when the idiot in 4B leaves an unlit burner on.

Wires: You think crosstalk and interference are a problem now, try putting everything in the unlicensed spectrum. Not to mention giving the "brain cancer" tinfoil hat brigade that much more fodder.

This is the one he gets right; every third week there is another CVE. Flash deserves to have Keyser Soze unleashed on it right after he's done with Java.

Farking THIS! Hmm, we want you to choose from a finite set of pre-defined options and you're currently holding a device with numbered buttons that transmit coded tones. Let's ignore those and instead use some half-assed voice recognition technology. That'll keep you entertained as your rage slowly builds, until you finally trip the profanity-detector threshold and we grudgingly connect you to our offshore (and/or prison labor) call center.

Yep.  My DVD gets YouTube, which I stay up watching live music on every night.  Only took me a week or so before I was maybe 75% as fast typing one by one on the "ABCDEF" on-screen as I am on a real QWERTY.

2012-09-12 05:07:55 PM
Camera Flash: Useful if you know how to use it. Don't blame the product for user failure.

Apple TV Remote: Great solution, buy a product from someone else. Fully admit I hate Apple with a passion. Rip off other companies, then sue everyone for supposedly ripping off the idea you ripped off. Yeah, great company, reminds me a lot of Microsoft.

CD/DVDs: Ummmm, ultrabook sales aren't nearly what the media wants them to be, and the same thing with the MacBook Air. I can agree with putting items on thumb drives, but these won't disappear anytime soon (see: movie industry).

Electric Range: I will NEVER own a gas range. You can achieve the same level of quality from an electric range in your cooking provided you actually pay attention to how you cook. Most of my friends and family have switched from gas to electric due to bad quality of parts and leak-related issues that were caused by the manufacturer.

Adobe Flash: Should have been stillborn, imho.

Hornit: I don't ride bikes, too damn dangerous to do such on streets around here. Have NEVER seen or heard a hornit before. Frankly, cyclists need to learn to obey the rules of the road. If a cyclist was riding a bike in the middle of the road, then they should be gently tapped by a vehicle back onto the side of a lane where they belong.

Bluetooth headsets: Agree that they should NOT be used at registers, or when trying to get assistance finding an item in a store. Otherwise, I'll continue to wear mine because I don't see the reason to take it off when I'm running in to pick up a box of screws in Lowes.

Electric Guitar: You want one to be annoyed with? Electric drum sets. Come sit on my pool deck sometime and listen to the idiot the next street over with no musical aptitude whatsoever...

Leaf Blower: Agree only if used to blow leaves off your lawn and onto something else. I use my electric one to blow grass clippings back onto my grass. Wonderful fertilizer.

Onscreen Alphabetic Keyboards: Try looking at a Dvorak keyboard sometime, your mind will be blown.

Wall Warts: Agree with everything but the "look for a replacement". Good luck on that score with some tech.

Wires: You'll pry my wired connection from my cold, dead hands...unless you can give me wireless that functions at the same level. Until then, I'll strangle you if you try.

Some of the items in this list (like the bluetooth headset and the leaf blower) are annoying when other people are using them around you.
When you need them yourself, they're actually very handy.

Why do people dislike leaf blowers? Is it the noise? I have a little over acre and it isn't any noiser than my lawn mower.

I'm not saying it's great, Flash bugs out on me a lot more these days too. Something broke a couple months back and it hasn't been anywhere near as stable as it once was. But what's the replacement? People are fleeing Java because every third release has a security hole you can drive a bus through, but Flash isn't there yet.

For me, it's not the sequence of the letters that's annoying, it's the infernal slowness of moving around the onscreen keyboard with the arrow keys and clicking the OK button on each letter.

Meh.  Some people are just ultra-sensitive to any noise around their house.  I have a guy who blows the leaves down the whole block weekly.  Doesn't bother me.  It lasts for like 5-10 minutes at most.  I have thin walls and windows, and he's using it like 10 feet from where I watch TV, and I can hear the TV just fine.
