I still fire up Freelancer every once in a while, great mod community.

I played the holy hell out of all of those games. This can only be good news.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
Welcome!

If you've made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.

If not, you're still welcome!

I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.

I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.

I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.

With the power of today's computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.

With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.

If you've played my games, you'll know that's what I love to do.

I'm here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.

I hope you'll be as excited by it as I am.

My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.

If you register below you'll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game's website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It's my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.

The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.

My name is Chris Roberts.

And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

Nice

If that's half as awesome as i'm imagining, EVE online is doomed.

Doomed, i say.

ThatGuyGreg: I played the holy hell out of all of those games. This can only be good news.

Same here. Just add in the physics of I-War (Independence War) and I'd play it for a decade.

2012-09-12 05:38:52 PM
I'd give it a shot. Never played any of those games.

Years ago I ran into a guy in a bar talking about wing commander, turns out he work on part of the sound design.

As a kid I played the ever loving shiat out of the wing commander games. I hope this works out and we get a good scifi game out of it.

/Hope it's not a FPS, I hate those.

Considering X never lets you land on any planets, none.

Love the X series. Can't wait for the new one. Was always pissed I couldn't land on any planets.

Privateer was one of the greatest games of that era imo. Some of the Wing Commanders were also awesome. I have signed up so let's see what this dude produces!

The more I think about it, I'm not what the difference between a flight sim and a FPS is, but I still feel that way.

The X series wasn't too bad, although it took a while to get into it, and if you stop playing for a few months, you can't remember how any of it worked.

This game always reminded me a lot of Wing Commander, and in many ways I preferred it to WC:

I found Colony Wars to be closer to B5 with the ability to fly backwards.

Darn Shame Sony Didn't make a PS3 game in the series.

I'm not overly familiar with his games... I played a bit of one of the later Wing Commander games but picked it up at a time when I was very busy and messing w/ many games.

I've regretted purchase after purchase of many space games. I'll throw money at this guy just to see what he makes solely based on the fact he comes off as someone with passion and at least some demonstrated ability to get things done.

R.I.P. Origin!

I grew up on Wing Commander (among other games). I'm sooooo looking forward to this.

This guy has been out of "the game" for too long. He has no idea what hes getting into.

Hes not aware of the new game industry model of releasing half baked crap for money grabs and never seeing it finished.

hes also never going to get anyone signed on with MONEY to actually make whatever grandios world he plans on creating. Sure he may get it started. but it wont be long before the money grubbers start pinching his nipples to release the game early for a cash grab.

I signed up. I don't know what Chris has in mind, but whatever it is, I want a look at it.

I loved the numbered WC games. I didn't so much get into the others. Later, I became a big fan of Freespace and Freespace2, the latter of which also has some great mods. If you were a WC fan and never played FS/FS2, you should try it.

If I remember correctly, he bailed around the middle of Freelancer's production to chase a Hollywood dream. So he's got that angle beat by himself, and one reason I'm thinking this may never see the light of day.

That the Freelancer team stuck on and made a memorable game (not as deep as originally intended, but got all the basics right) instead of a turd in the likes of Daikatana, Duke Nukem 4ever or just abandoned the lenghty project is something of note.

Haven't played X but I've heard they're over-complicated. Got DarkStar One and that was freaking awful. Been trying Freelancer mods recently before this news broke; is Crossfire any good? (one other note: while downloading Crossfire today, the antivirus prog on my comp said no viruses, but the Crossfire program appears to be unstable. Hm.)

2012-09-12 07:26:49 PM
Still holding out hope that Infinity gets made one day. Hopefully this guy has something similar in the pipe.

And The X series is decent. Especially the latest offerings. But it really over-complicates some things and misses the mark when it comes to actually being fun.

2012-09-12 07:37:36 PM
Privateer 2 had in its live action cast:

Clive Owen, John Hurt, Christopher Walken, and Brian Blessed.

That's NUTS.

/I was too young at the time to notice, but I called Clive Owen "Lev Arris" for a long time.

2012-09-12 07:41:56 PM
Wing Commander is still my all-time favorite game series. I have not been this excited about an upcoming game in ages!

2012-09-12 07:44:43 PM
I heard about this yesterday and I went out and picked up Freelancer. I had tried to play it years before but never got in to it. This time im having alot of fun, it has a few flaws but mostly things you could tell they had to leave out or didn't have budget for. Like how awful most of the voice acting is save for the main characters.

Gonna go check out some mods for it

I loved Wing Commander (For some reason I never got into Privateer, I wish I had tried it). I really hope Chris Roberts is successful!

The old Wing Commander games were great. Very immersive (even the instruction manuals were written as shipboard magazines). And Privateer is the first "sandbox" game I can remember playing.

I am using firefox with flash block and no script (blocking everything) ... There seems to be an "ENLIST" button at the bottom .... when i enable everything with no script, there seems to need a code ... so i assume you can bypass that.

Damn, that code should have been obvious.

I do love that genre of gaming. The Tie Fighter/X-Wing series (particularly X-Wing Alliance, which was my personal favorite, though YMMV) was one of my favorites back in the day...Never really played the Wing COmmander series, but the more I hear about it, the more I want to.

Loved Wing Commander, though wish Prophecy was a little better storyline/acting wise. Wing Commanders 3-4 were f'ing epic.

I have played every game Roberts was involved in, and they were all awesome.

And then I saw the Wing Commander movie...

I guess he has served his penance. Over a decade as an outcast. As long as he sticks to making great games, I'll support his return. Just keep him out of the greater Los Angeles area.
