I like the new Nano. If it has a clip on the back it would be almost perfect for working out.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: machodonkeywrestler: Johnsnownw: I don't understand this infatuation with phone thickness. When I bought my Samsung Captivate, 2 years ago, I thought it was too thin. There is a point where it becomes too thin to handle, and I think we reached that stage 2 years ago. Enough with obsession over making the thinnest phone!

Also, it looks to me as though the iPhone 5 is going to cost more and have fewer or equal necessary features as current Android offerings. I don't think this phone is going to bring in many new customers, but I'm sure current owners will upgrade...because they've invested too much in the company. Suckers.

Give me a thicker phone with a larger battery any day.

According to Macworld's feed, the iPhone 5 has 8 hours of 3G talk time, 3G browsing time, and LTE browsing time, and 225 hours of standby time, which exceeds the battery performance for the iPhone 4S. That's not bad, IMO.

Try again, champ. I have a clock radio with an ipod/iphone dock that I use every night. I works just as well now as the day I bought it and has absolutely nothing that needs to be changed. However, now if I decided to go upgrade my phone (which I'm not, the final straw being the continued foxconn abuses) I would have to either pay additional for a special adapter that would likely end up breaking or buy a new clock. It's a stupid money grab with the only purpose being to push more of their proprietary bullshiat. fark Apple.

So what phone would satisfy your requirement of not being manufactured by a Chinese company which has questionable labor practices? I'm honestly not being snarky, but my work Dell has Foxconn boards in it, and I'm sure my Moto phone came from there as well:

Nexzus: BohemianGraham: Still no scrollable dock or widgets.

This is what I still don't get about iOS - no widgets. Widgets are the most supremely awesome thing to ever grace a smartphone. Unfortunately, the Samsung widgets on my S3 suck ass, but on my Desire HD, one look at the home screen, I had the time, weather, next appointment, and subject, sender and first few lines of my latest email.

Swipe left I'd have more of my inbox. Swipe right and I'd have more of my calendar. It (was) highly functional.

Download the go weather app. IT's widget are great.

From what I can tell, it's a fine phone. For people that own a Mac, it might even make it the right phone for some. But this is not some "game-changer" that the indoctrinated believe that it is.

The indoctrinated are total pussies when it come to tolerating any form of criticism towards Apple products. In each Apple thread we have some pussy crying about how Apple is being picked on again. Supposedly, the iPhone 5 gets 10 hours of video playback. If that extra hour matters, you bought the right phone. Personally, I only care about standby and talk time. I have a job that doesn't involve travel, so I seriously doubt I'll ever be watching 10 hours of video on my phone.

But hey, I personally like having choices on the market. I prefer Apple stuff, but realize it's not for everyone. I have even thought about buying a Google Nexus Tablet to see what the Android fuss is about, but I am pretty happy with my iPad and don't really want to throw $200 down for an experiment.

What I don't get, and have never understood, is why people hate Apple so much? Now that we're in an age of interoperability, why should what I use matter one bit to anyone else? And vice versa?

Slightly bigger, slightly faster, slightly better camera. iOS version will be the same so software wise no difference. $99 for the 4S or $199 for the 16GB new phone to get the slightlies.

SFW? Are you too stupid to just keep using your current setup until you want to buy a new clock radio? "I have to buy a new iPhone right away even though the old one works fine!" If you are for real, then you are the douche the iHaters hate so much.

I'm not buying a new phone anytime soon. I have accessories that work with my current phone that will be sorely missed, but in the long run, who cares? The new connector will be really nice when I need a new phone. I hate this huge sh*tty connector on my iPhone 4.

Latinwolf: Spoken like a true iDrone. "How dare anyone have a valid criticism of anything related to Apple".

People whine about Apple losing the floppy disk and the built-in zip drive too. It is a valid criticism only if you think you need to upgrade right away. Everyone who buys this phone will know that they will be losing their old accessories when they buy it. They have a choice to get any other phone they want if they are so inclined.

Typical anDrone iHater idiocy. I have no control over what phone my company buys me, I also don't care. I fail to see why a phone you will never buy gets your panties in such a knot.

It's not the "pay moar" part that bugs me; I understand that the new connector is the price of getting a smaller, thinner iPhone. But it is a stumbling block to upgrading. I have about $200 in dock connector accessories that would have to be upgraded. So, I won't be standing in line for this phone. I will be watching the reviews, though, and waiting to see when the new accessories come out for the new connector :-)

I think a big part of the problem is the people. It seems like for every reasonable person like you there's a dozen people who want to proclaim that everyone else's products are the dog crap on Apple's shoes and the world would be better off if everyone everywhere just had an Apple everything.

Verizon LTE I guess would be #1 for me. Then better camera, bigger screen, neater look/feel/design, in that order.
Siri I think might be useful if someone sent you a txt msg while driving and you wanted it to be dictated.

The iPhone 5 is meant for people who already like the iPhone. It adds new features while staying within the design parameters for an iPhone. It's not revolutionary, it's just another phone in the evolution of the iPhone. Is it up to par with current generation Android phones? I have no
idea. But even if it's not it's entirely irrelevant.

Why anybody thinks (and comments about) the fact that it's not "better than" something is just bizarre.

FWIW, I love Apple products, but the hype is just ridiculous. It's going on 1h 45m of "announcement". Granted, that's not just the new phone, but they could have announced all the new stuff in an hour, tops.

That would be what I'd recommend. The biggest reason to get my iPhone 4 was the retina display and the more powerful A4 chip inside. New apps might run better with the A6 chip, but if the price diff is an issue, and/or you have a lot of accessories based on the 30-pin dock connector, then the 4S will probably work great for you.

Siri is a combination of voice recognition and google. So no, you don't need GPS for either of those.

ok, Siri ties into some location-based stuff. "find directions to ____", "find a hotel near me", etc. Generally Apple can get pretty good location information based on which wifi network you're connected to, but prepare for inaccurate results.

Yeah, it's weird the way users want something that works and this annoys IT guys.

If it all just worked, I'd love it. But they don't. I have to answer more calls from departments that use Macs than PCs. Applications don't work, plenty of printing issues, AD connectivity is a trainwreck, and on and on.

The whole thing has just completely jaded me I'm sure.

AD connectivity? You got a bunch of users on 10.7 machines? That was horrible to get on domains but 10.8 made it so much simpler and easier. Pretty much 10.5/6 works well with AD, 7 blows, 8 is solid again.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: So, I'm going to have to assume you don't give the smallest shiat about this and just want to keep doing things "the way we've always done them...where IT shall remain the 'department of NO.'"

No, you're going to be smug and assume the best way to do things is the Apple way. And it currently is not. Because with the infrastructure we have in place, our current software, etc, it would take a budget 10x what we currently have in a school system to change everything around to make it "Apple friendly." And to what end? So people can say they use Apple instead of PCs? Outline any sort of advantage we'd get for spending that type of money. Currently, everything does work extremely well technology-wise in our district. Remote workspaces, wireless campuses, BYOD, parent and teacher portals, we're hardly the department of "no." We're utilitarian. I don't care what the tool looks like, as long as it gets the job done. And Apple doesn't offer ANYTHING better in that regard. Sorry, it just doesn't.

What I don't get, and have never understood, is why people hate Apple so much? Now that we're in an age of interoperability, why should what I use matter one bit to anyone else? And vice versa?

I think a big part of the problem is the people. It seems like for every reasonable person like you there's a dozen people who want to proclaim that everyone e ...

Reasons:
- Fanboys and hipsters.
- Monopoly over hardware that is somehow legal
- Completely locked and fenced in OS
- Fanboys and hipsters
- "The Jesus Phone"
- Costs
- Fake claims that 'it just works'
- Fake claims that they cannot get infected
- Fanboys and Hipsters.

Also a note on the whole IT thing. Really? It just works? Try and use a MAC in an Enterprise environment and see how much fun it is. I had a video card start to die in my Mac Pro tower, no diagnostic tools available to figure out what was causing hangs and graphical glitches. There is almost no administrative capabilities for normal users and that's a big no no. Open source support is weak as well.

Oh and 4 little words: "Spinning pinwheel of death". Never have I had a quad core, 8GB machine hang and perform as badly as my Mac does. I frequently get the pinwheel, or even worse, tremendous amount of hard drive activity on my machine, when nothing is actively doing anything. I'll look at my activity monitor and see 20-30MB/sec write speeds for sometimes as long as 15-20 minutes, try and use a machine when your HDD is off doing it's own little thing.

Terrible experience imho. The iTunes changes were not asked for, and I don't know why they made them. Any modern Android device will blow this farking thing out of the water. If Samsung's lawsuit about 4G LTE goes through (as they created the radios) iPhone will be held up anyway.

kab: And in the upcoming days, we'll get to see how truly strapped for cash the 99% is.

Maybe the most pungent and effective comment in this thread.

Is audio going to work over the new dock connector? my car stereo plugs in to the existing one via USB and gets the audio through that cable. Is that going to "just work" if I swap out the cable for one with the 9-pin connector, or am I going to need some crazy adapters?

WinoRhino: Mitch Taylor's Bro: LOL, you're so precious.

If you say so. The Apple sales guys came into my school district trying to sell us on iPads and apple products. They have NO WAY to manage them, no way to ensure specific apps are installed across the system to everything. No response when we asked them how to maintain installation of apps through some central iTunes account. Their answer was "Just tell the teachers what to install and they can put in for reimbursement if the app costs money." The few teachers that were issued iPads via grants now want docking stations, keyboards, and have no idea how they can use them with the projectors and other classroom technology we have standard across the district like smart boards, etc.

I don't know what Apple people came into your world but they are idiots. you can easily manage them with the free iPhone Configuration utility that can be deployed in a matter of seconds.

allow me to direct your attention the the thread from last year's iphone 4s announcement. there were many dire predictions of failure, for all the same reasons mentioned in this thread. maybe you'll be right this time.

Many people take issue with Apple's patent absurdity. There are other players in this, but Apple is the major one, and it's been pretty ridiculous for some time.

That's where a LOT of the hate comes from.

iPhone5, according to Apple:

it's designed & built to an exacting standard, unlike anything we or anyone in the industry has made before
"I don't think the level of invention has ever been matched by any other product we've done" -- Bob Mansfield
Jony Ive said they went "way beyond what we knew to be possible" to engineer the iPhone 5
It's not a phone, it's a goddamned engineering miracle.

Think Different. Or differently. Or a little bit better than last time, but still different. But better.

Fark it, it's skinnier than the last one.
