Ultimately, Larson's central principal is really pretty simple: no one is as smart as they think they are.

This particular idea is perhaps best shown in that wonderful classic, "Midvale School for the Gifted"

Two cavemen facing each other, fists held out. One says "Dang, tied again". The caption read: "Before paper and scissors".

That one always got me. Someone even "borrowed" an overhead projector and traced it on the wall of the lobby in my college dorm.

Couldn't all of those points been summed up with "People are neither as in control nor intelligent as they think and Far Side used absurd humor to make this point often, now here's the funny," then just listed the comics with out the repetitive commentary?

A french chef lies dead on the floor in front of a frog husband and wife who are in bed. The husband, with his missing leg and recently fired shotgun says, "I always knew he would come back for the other one."

It's an impressive feat of Gary Larson's to create something so memorable that I can picture every comic just from the captions.

"Oh hey! I just love these things! ...Crunchy on the outside, and a chewy center!"

On of my favorite far sides, and what I took my handle from (though I remembered the spelling incorrectly and incorrectly inserted an "r").

My parents got me the t-shirt with that comic on it for Christmas when I was like 12 or 13 yrs old. Seeing how the whole family cusses like drunken sailors, it was hard to not say "you farking bastards" has I was laughing.

This was a nice touch by the author. It only ruined the first four jokes for me. I then learned to scroll more carefully so I could still enjoy the joke as the master intended, rather than having it destroyed by an incompetent "author".
