That sounds like the broken window fallacy, you can't create a net benefit just by burning up some of your workers.

FTA: "Critics say nuclear-armed Pakistan's corrupt and ineffective government has failed to tackle the country's problems."

Well, threatening an employer who refuses to stop cutting corners and set/enforce sensible safety guidelines seems like a very effective tactic, naturally.

Context. How does that work?

Chinese factory/dorms install suicide nets. I don't think this little incident is going to spark anything unless it's another fire at the factory next door.

Dear Jerk: I was wondering about Romney's honest opinion of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire/reforms, or if that is something he concerns himself with.

It's a disaster that occurred about 36 years before he was even born, so I'm guessing that he doesn't think about on a daily basis.

If a ship sinks next week, are you going to wonder about his opinion on shipping improvements following the Titanic disaster? Or his feeling on aircraft safety in relation to the deHavilland Comet?

It's only a concern for people that employ workers in the states. Not a concern for people that layoff workers in the states.

Yes but if all your workers die in a fire you will have no one to layoff, thus costing you millions in reduced labor costs.

If you take out that pauper insurance on them and outsource their jobs then you may be able to turn a tidy profit. Best to time it to occur just before payday though. Maximize your leverage and all that.

Capitalism, what's not to love? I'd have employed a flood, though. Accelerants are cost prohibitive these days. No real property damage, just reset all the breakers on Monday.

Don't think American Über-corps aren't trying to figure out how to actually do that here. I heard its on Jamie Dimon's list of Romney demands.

I was just referring to the Triangle Shirtwaist fire the other day. Huh. I honestly wonder if this would have a similar effect. It would be nice. Maybe if all factories had similar workers standards, we'd have a more level global playing field when it comes to jobs.
