WhiskeyBender: Were we all secretly gay in the 80's and just didn't realize it? Some of the videos back then...whoaa

We took one look at Judas Priest's Rob Halford -- with his bleach-blond crewcut, leather pants & vest, leather cap and riding crop -- and said "that dude must have to climb over a mountain of top-shelf pussy just to get out of bed in the morning!! And that's probably nothing compared to the weapons-grade poon that George Michael scores!"

"Whoa, dad, why are Mick Jagger and David Bowie singing to each other like they're in a bad romance?"
"Ok, TV off and you go play outside."

I'll never forget watching Freddie Mecury perform at Live Aid in '86, wearing Leather pants and a white Wife-beater, and sporting a luxurious handle-bar mustache and thinking "got-damn! that right there is a man's man"

Yeah, so, I think the answer to your question may be "yes"

Grantland or Topless Robot or someone needs to do a series on this. I stumbled on the video for Smashing Pumpkins "Today" the other day.

- Billy drives an ice cream truck. Why? Who knows.
- He picks up his cross-dressing guitarist
- HELICOPTER SHOT!
- Kids making out in a wheat field
- Gas station now, other two band members are bored
- Paint up the truck!
- And each other!
- More wheat field sex.
- Everyone into the truck.
- SNACKS!
- Kick Billy to the curb.

pretty much this. everything MTV was good at is easily doable better now without it.

Which must suck if you're them, but somehow after watching them devolve over the last 10 yrs, I really have zero eff's to give.

Internet killed the video star.

Just a guess but when you replace music with a bunch of STD/warts, what did you expect?

MTV's viewers went to the Internet, just like Sifl & Olly.

Do bands even make videos anymore? If so, why? There doesn't seem to be anybody that shows them.

In 1992 a crack commando unit was sent to MTV by a bunch of empty suits to create a cheaper programming option soon to be called "Reality TV", a crime they certainly committed. These men promptly escaped from MTV and spread Reality TV like a virus into the Los Angeles underground. Today,
still wanted for crimes against humanity, they survive as soldiers of fortune for TLC, History, Discovery, and almost every other television station on the airwaves today. If you have a problem with viewership - if you want to appeal to the lowest common denominator - and if you can find them - maybe you can hire:

"The dumb it down and make it ridiculous" team.

\"Ow my Balls" will be right back after a short commercial break!

DjangoStonereaver: Spanky3woods: As a kid who grew up in the 70s watching live or even recorded bands was a rare thing. We had the occasional Midnight Special or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert shows but nothing regular and nothing showing you new acts. Then in the early 80s we got MTV and at first it was like water on a dying plant. We used to make an evening of going to someone's house, getting high, eating pizza and watching MTV.

Then the dumbasses killed a good thing. Serves them right for farking up a whole genre.

My next big idea is a network that shows 3 - 7 minute clips of nothing but R-Rated Stand Up Comedy. I'm accepting angel investments and VC commitments for launching my network which I've already names SUC for Stand Up Comedy

Um... Its been done. And its now Comedy Central.

Actually, Comedy Central has never really done the R-Rated comedy thing right. My channel would be unedited

Apos: Handsome B. Wonderful: Apos: "A TV network with subpar programming ends up losing viewers by the truckload."

Explain TLC.

A vile and confounding exception to the rule, for sure.

MTV reality programming grabs the...lets say the 16-24 crowd
TLC reality programming gets the >24 crowd

So, people will grow out of MTV, but will never grow out of Siamese midgets in toddler beauty pageants.

/at least that is how I see it.

Sorta, except you kinda knew Michael was gay (at least in my mind) back then. Halford? That was...surprising.
