Mrtraveler01: InmanRoshi: Romney has not backed off the response - "It's never too early for the United States government to condemn attacks on Americans and to defend our values," he said Wednesday - but his campaign faces a near consensus in Republican foreign policy circles that, whatever the sentiment, Romney faltered badly.

"It's deeply unfortunate when the circumstance of the statement becomes the story," said Rick Perry's former foreign policy adviser, Victoria Coates, who is now an adjunct fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, and who suggested that Romney should simply have "gone earlier rather than save it for midnight" to avoid appearing to play politics on September 11. "It's unfortunate that it's playing out this way, and hopefully they can get back on message, because their point is sound," she said.

Other conservatives were less sympathetic.

"It's bad," said a former aide to Senator John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. "Just on a factual level that the statement was not a response but preceding, or one could make the case precipitating. And just calling it a 'disgrace' doesn't really cut it. Not ready for prime time."

A third Republican, a former Bush State Department official, told BuzzFeed, "It wasn't presidential of Romney to go political immediately - a tragedy of this magnitude should be something the nation collectively grieves before politics enters the conversation."

"They were just trying to score a cheap news cycle hit based on the embassy statement and now it's just completely blown up," said a very senior Republican foreign policy hand, who called the statement an "utter disaster" and a "Lehman moment" - a parallel to the moment when John McCain, amid the 2008 financial crisis, failed to come across as a steady leader.

Remember when people were questioning Mitt's lack of foreign policy experience/skills. Seems like this is one of those reason ...

apparently the pictures of his smug face above on this page are from THAT press conference. He looks like he got to sneak a peak at his christmas present.

Does anyone have a gif of the Romney speech? Was he actually smirking while saying Obama is apologizing for terrorists? Or did someone in the room make a funny comment? I cannot believe this is legit. Borderline traitor if you laugh at Americans getting killed.

... smells like Republican desperation. Disgusting and reprehensible to try and score political points with this but I put nothing past them these days.

Oh, I'd say they're pissed off at the people who did the deed, whoever they may be. Don't know who they are, but we will in due time.

Though one of our own trying to score cheap political points off of the death of our diplomats... we know exactly who that individual is.

Gulper Eel (AKA subtard): And the news about the first consulate employee killed broke at around 8:30, which is PLENTY of time for a newspaper with its shiat together to rework a front page.

The Times is moving the printing schedule for its weekday front section forward - to about 6 p.m. from 11 p.m. - while creating an inside section just for late-breaking news, to go to press at 11:30 p.m. or later.

That chicken looks really, awfully, dreadfully tired.

The press conference is on YouTube. His face is always vaguely smirky IMO, but he doesn't really get his smirk on until the Q&A portion at the end. Particularly, look at where he says, "I'm not going to get into hypotheticals...We responded last night to what happened in Egypt." The game-show-host smirk photo I think comes when he says thank you and leaves.

It seems to be a defensive reaction for Romney. When he's reading prepared material he's OK, but as soon as he has to answer any questions, he gets that Judge Smails-esque panic-smirk.

Wicked Chinchilla: Act of War is simply a justification for war. It does not mean war is automatically declared.

A pancake is a pancake, it does not mean you are eating breakfast at the time.

If this theoretical pancake exists, it will be eaten by me and in doing so it will become breakfast time extension.

skinnycatullus: the craven diplomatic response to it

I'm confused about what this is supposed to mean. The only official response I've seen has been condemnation.

It's the republicans employing the "big Lie" strategy and seizing on a document written and released BEFORE the attacks that tried to calm people's feelings. Romney is now claiming that it was "our response" to the attack and that we offered sympathy to the attackers rather than condemning the violence

False. It will become an amalgamation of the nearest meal and breakfast.

exp. - Eating Breakfast food at or around lunchtime = Brunch.
or, and this is my personal favorite, breakfast at or around dinner time = Brinner. I love brinner.

And even worse, the tweet was sent from Egypt, where the eventual protest was fairly mild. The violent attack was in Libya. But the big lie conflates the two, and makes it seem as though the t weet was a response to the attack in Libya.

HighOnCraic: My two cents: as a New Yorker who used to read the Times, the News, and the Post almost every day, I know that the News and the Post would almost always have the late sports scores, but the Times would hardly ever have the late sports scores. Perhaps someone with free time can check the print editions of all three sports sections to back that up.

Here's the Times print-page synopsis. You can see capsule versions of the stories by first hovering over the table of contents and taking it from there. They got the Mets and Yankees scores in, but I'm not sure when the games ended. Yankees-Red Sox tend to run long.

At any rate, and to recap: the Times did have the embassy story that did include the riots and the first consular employee's death but not the other four deaths.

I think that even without the ambassador's death available for the press run, it was worthy of front page coverage, seeing as the Times is the paper of record and all.

They put it on A4 with no mention on the front. The News, Post, USA Today, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and WSJ had variations of it on their front page, kicking people to longer stories inside. Which is what they do when something breaks and they want to get it in without reorganizing the whole front page.

And I think Newsday was still trying to find Libya on their globe.

Not mentioning troops during his RNC speech

/As Lewis Black pointed out, if you're Pesident, "You can't talk about the war with a smile on your face. [G.W. Bush did] it constantly. If you're the President, you should go 'We're going to talk about the war, I must have a frowny face.'"

//Long quote slashies

Romney is right. Obama's response has been totally lame. If Romney were president he'd personally fly to Libya, buy the entire country by putting $10 million of his own money down and financing the rest of the deal with $120 billion in junk bonds, then pay off the country's leaders with huge bonuses, burden the country with massive debt it can never pay off, and then cash out, leaving the country in financial ruin.

You know, creating jobs.

I watched it (and here's a link, so you can watch, too). He didn't start out smiling. But the smirk just kind of got away from him a few times - when he thought he was scoring points, or when the press dared to question his actions. Mostly he's pretty condescending about the whole "being questioned" thing.

Then you haven't seen the Romney-fied version of the White House response. Even though he was nowhere near the White House, of course it's the only version that's "true"...

What an asshole. Romney can't even let something tragic like this go by without lying and then trying to turn it into political gain.
