The high score list is why the DIY breathalyzers in bars turned out to be a bad idea.

At first I was worried but then I realized it was a good thing:

One reason: Reduced manpower means police are missing less obvious drunks as they focus efforts elsewhere.
I want police to focus on real drunks, not "less obvious drunks" which means people who have a prohibited alcohol concentration and may not be drunk.

Driving through Michigan (my parents were born there and escaped, but I have a lot of extended family to visit there), I saw billboards for an anti-teen drinking campaign. It said something like, "Allegan County teens start drinking at 13." Then I drove a little further and saw, "Kent County teens start drinking at 14," and I thought, "Damn, Kent County, you'd better step it up!"

/I don't think those billboards will have the effect they want.

WOOHOO!

My hometown *and* the SO's 2 hometowns are on the top of the list! Whee!

/with my hometown, I think it's just that the cops are bored as hell and pull over everybody for anything, it's really a pointless chart esp if you consider margins of error... I want to know frequency, dammit

Shame that cops had to get fired across the state just because some rich guys saw the recession as cover for budget cuts.

Also: has there ever been any evidence that escalating penalties *deters* crime?

Forty-Two

Driving cross country recently I was struck* by the number of signs asking people to call police to report drunk drivers. Except the signs in Illinois (+/- 1 state) asked drunk drivers to call police, if I parsed them correctly.

*Figuratively

ringersol

In general, perception of probability of punishment is more important than severity. Fine doubling, for example, was demontrated to have no effect on violation rate. (So of course all states adopted it.)

The entire DUI industry is broken. It should be based on cure rather than punishment. These people aren't thinking about punishment when they drive. Many of them don't even know they are legally considered drunk.

A first time offense is probably a non-alcoholic driver and an isolated incident. Let him go with a caution and a note on the record in case it happens again.

A repeat offender probably needs treatment and supervision, e.g. probation with a daily reporting requirement.

A chronic offender, having failed treatment and supervision, can't be trusted to be out of jail.

There is a billboard in my town that says something to the effect of "Texting while driving means your eyes aren't on the road"

because if there's one thing thats safer, it's keeping your eyes on a billboard!

So is the goal to get a BAL of 1.0? I mean that's what one wanting to be a "SUPER DRUNK" should aspire to, correct?

We should print T-Shirts - "Aim for 1.0" or "BAL of 1.0 or bust" or "Fat, Drunk, and less than a 1.0 is no way to go through life son"

Many people are supposedly blowing over .50 these days.

While the media creates mythical 'super drunks' to explain it, i'm beginning to suspect something is being done to inflate peoples BAC's.

You do realize that less people working means less people being taxed, which means less $ for the budget, right? It's kind of basic math...

No. With the stepped up enforcement we are just catching the high achievers that have probably always been out there.

ER job years ago- woman with a BAC in the mid .4 range. Confirmed by blood analysis. She was walking, swearing, spitting, pissing in the corners of the room. Lovely lady. She shouldn't have been breathing but she was still walking and talking. The tolerance of a champion.

Saw people with blood levels over .3 that seemed fine. They had to camp out with us because the local psych hospital wouldn't take them over .25 and the cops preferred them under .2 before they tossed them in the tank.

The drunk guys were OK unless they had piggy backed coke or meth. The women were nasty, snarling, vile pigs.

My father was one of these superdrunks. Never knew him not to be intoxicated. Kinda sucks not knowing the man he was beneath the alcoholism. He was very rarely pulled over, but I could always tell he shouldn't be driving and took his keys from him on multiple occasions.

He left this world last month at the age of 52. Liver failure did him in. I find it ridiculous that a thread on fark would remind me of him... But here I am.

//RIP dad. Try to lay off the IceHouse before you take your cloud for a spin

I hear what you're saying, but still find it odd no one was ever found walking around with a fatal BAC for many many years, which led to the idea it was fatal to reach such levels, and now multitudes are being found. If it were a simple matter of better enforcement we'd still have caught at least one person in the past who blew what is considered a fatal BAC. Instead of them just suddenly appearing everywhere in the last 10 years.
