APL has been around since 1964, well before Apple ever existed.

I think I get their outlook. Steve Jobs is dead, so they maybe have 5 years max of good ideas that he left them with. After that they have to survive on royalties and suing competitors for any profits.

So what's the hip new company now if Apple is going the way of a big evil corporation? Is it cool now to buy that Microsoft tablet when it comes out?

2012-09-12 09:48:48 AM
Fark Apple.

2012-09-12 09:50:42 AM
It's fascinating to watch, really.

These young, left-leaning, hipster, types are out there. They shout at how evil corporations, Wall Street, and the 1% are. They protest.

Yet, when another iGadget comes out, they'll be first in line to buy it at any price, completely oblivious to the atrocities of Apple.

They got all that money laying around.. might as well employ some lawyers instead of make their product competitive.

Android is currently leaving iOS in the dust and they know it.

Their legal department really does seem to be off its meds lately. What ever happened to the idea that Bad PR is Bad?

Seems to me it'll be equally amusing/diverting for the Church of Jobs devotees. Everyone loves a Blasphemer, after all.

No, they are not trademarking the letters A, P, and L. Subby doesn't understand how trademarks work.

Grapple: What ever happened to the idea that Bad PR is Bad?

I think it was supplanted by the notion that there's no such thing as bad publicity some time ago.

The first programming language I learned was APL. When I was 14, Dad had an IBM 5100 at home and helped me learn it.

Dupe...

But that said, it doesn't look like this is over the letters a.pl, but over an icon:
The Polish patent office said on Tuesday the U.S. maker of the iPad, iPhone and iPod had filed a complaint, accusing the website of copying one of Apple's icons to its logo and riding its coattails to win customers.

"Apple brand is widely recognized and the company says that A.pl, by using the name that sounds similar, is using Apple's reputation," patent office spokesman Adam Taukert said.

A.pl chief executive Radoslaw Celinski said: "The accusation is ludicrous." The firm, which is not currently using the logo in question, is looking at Apple's complaint.

Certainly, Apple can't claim trademark rights in the letters. The word "Apple," possibly, as well as a sound-alike, but only within their industry. But if - and this is pure speculation since the website screenshot in the article doesn't use the accused logo - if the logo used Apple's apple-silhouette-with-a-bite icon, then it could be infringing.

It's posted in the other article in the business tab:
i.huffpost.com

Eh. Maybe the stylized leaf, but other than that, I don't see much similarity. I don't think it's close enough that consumers would be confused.

2012-09-12 10:16:13 AM
If they moved the "fresh" to center so that there wasn't even a suggestion of a bite, that would be even better for them.

F*ck apple in their cocksucking douchebag asses.

Honestly, how f*cking low can a company sink? They look incredibly pathetic.

Apple needs to be careful, the samsung case made sense but if they keep patenting and suing everybody they are going to fall out of favor quick. The biggest thing going for them isn't their products it's their image, people think it's cool to own apple. It's a logo people associate with class, good taste, being cool, etc. If they continue down this route they are going to fall out of favor with the public and despite having a great product people wouldn't want to buy something that shows a logo everyone dislikes.

2012-09-12 10:41:35 AM
Everyone loves seeing the underdog win, a david vs goliath type deal. If they start stomping on the little guy they are going to fall out of favor very fast

Heh, we have a radio station here with the call letters WAPL. They've been around for quite some time though.
