iron_city_ap: No Serena references yet?
starlost: i don't think it is a big deal. they are not trying to prevent her from competing like the author claims they simply pulled her sponsorship and are probably giving it to someone they feel is more deserving at the moment.
Ebbelwoi: Well golly she's the NUMBER ONE JUNIOR PLAYER IN THE WORLD so her coaches should just let her do whatever the fark she wants. Dear CBSSports, sometimes coaches bench their star players to get a message through their thick skulls.... and also to reward less talented players who actuallly do what the coaches ask of them.
Waldo Pepper: For what it's worth, Townsend and her mother aren't upset about it. They told Perrotta they are grateful for everything the USTA has already done for them.So if both the player and her mom aren't upset about it, why is this a story? I wonder if she was white would CBS be making a big deal about it.
Monkeyfark Ridiculous: My neighborhood tennis person suggests it isn't about her weight or the US Open in particular but that the USTA thinks that as a junior she has been playing too much and would be healthier and better off tenniswise in the long run if she would sit out for a while, so they're not encouraging her to play tournaments for now because they see her future stardom as more important than anything she's doing as a junior. I have no idea, but that makes more sense to me than some kind of punishment for her weight, which looks normal enough anyway.
Christian Bale: Nobody complains when they give an NFL lineman a weight limit, and even pay him far less money if he doesn't make weight. But once it's a girl OMG OPRESSION BY SOCIETYThere's probably a better way for the USTA to motivate her than withholding their support, but seriously if someone is under-18 and an athlete and doesn't have their weight under control? It's only going to get far, far worse.
RminusQ: [upload.wikimedia.org image 225x300]First she breaks up Seth and Summer, then she becomes a tennis star?
cefm: 3) So there is obviously something way off in her game - #1's don't struggle like that.
JohnBigBootay: cefm: 3) So there is obviously something way off in her game - #1's don't struggle like that. What the hell? Making it to the quarterfinals and losing to a 12 seed is supposedly indicative of something being horribly wrong? that's a bit of an overreaction.
Neeek: RminusQ: [upload.wikimedia.org image 225x300]First she breaks up Seth and Summer, then she becomes a tennis star?I thought it was Seth's pathological lying and Summer's latent realization that she's actually wanted to do something with her life.
Triumph: Lindsay Davenport was a chunky kid and she did pretty well. You want her thinner? Change women's matches to best of 5.
Dr Dreidel: Top US Open upsets, as of August 2010 lists several #1s losing to unranked players (including JohnnyMac).
SevenizGud: Uhm, if she is still in juniors, then she'll never make it as a pro.It is like people saying, if I win the NCAA, then I'll go pro. Dude, if you are still not pro by 18, it's too late. And it's even more true for the girls.
Daniels: Perhaps people who know more about tennis than everyone posting in this thread combined believe that she's risking long term injury to her knees, hips, and ankles?Nope, must be tennis racism.
octopied: Daniels: Perhaps people who know more about tennis than everyone posting in this thread combined believe that she's risking long term injury to her knees, hips, and ankles?Nope, must be tennis racism.1. How is that their problem?2. She's not even that big. What, size 10 or 12? Who are they to judge?
