Islam is a sh*t religion and Arabs have a sh*t culture and both of them as commonly practiced in the middle-east are basically incompatible with first-world, Western, democratic societies and principles. I do however have faith in the ability of America to absorb and civilize a modest amount of middle-eastern immigrants over the space of a couple of generations. Good luck Europe.

All the comments, and perhaps I missed it, but I can't believe not a single person has commented on how freaking terrible the film trailer is. Holy crap, it needs a MST3K soundtrack, stat!

"The trailer was uploaded to YouTube by Sam Bacile, whom The Wall Street Journal Web site identified as a 52-year old Israeli-American real estate developer in California. He told the Web site he had raised $5 million from 100 Jewish donors to make the film. "Islam is a cancer," Mr. Bacile was quoted as saying.

You idiots paid 5 million dollars for this? Link Wow. Just wow.

There is a Pastor Terry Jones connection. Apparently he promoted the film today, in an attention-whoring statement:

" The video gained international attention when a Florida pastor began promoting it along with his own proclamation of Sept. 11 as "International Judge Muhammad Day."
In a statement on Tuesday, the pastor, Terry Jones of Gainesville, Fla., called the film "an American production, not designed to attack Muslims but to show the destructive ideology of Islam" and said it "further reveals in a satirical fashion the life of Muhammad."

Apparently there's some other Coptic Christian idiot named Morris Sadek who was involved , though he's not mentioned in that article.

Link

I realize these people have the right to make shiatty movies insulting Mohammed, but it was pretty stupid of them to be promoting this crap on Sept 11, with all the current events in the ME and the fact that we are still in Afghanistan. The mobs who killed the State Dept. worker are far worse, but these asshats did this to intentionally provoke and I hope they're ok that got someone killed for that execrable film.

Cyclometh: machoprogrammer: make me some tea: Thanks, Pastor Terry!

Yeah, let's blame him and not the guys who killed the diplomat. Because it is so hard to not outrage over someone making a film about your sky-wizard prophet

This isn't a zero-sum game. More than one entity can be held to account.

The people who attacked the embassies are criminals at best, murderers and terrorists at worst. One hopes they will be held accountable for their actions, but I'm not holding my breath.

But Terry shares some blame for his acts, which don't occur in a vacuum. He could not have been unaware of what his acts could provoke, and the risk that he was placing people in general, and Americans specifically at by giving these people a reason to coalesce their hatred into this.

Charitably, his acts might be characterized as irresponsible. More accurately I'd say he acted with callous disregard for other people's lives.

I bet you blame the way a woman was dressed as having to do with her rape.

No, you started getting a bit snarky, and clearly didn't grasp what I was saying, nor give me much indication that you tried to.

I don't think you read all of my earlier posts on the matter at hand, just picked a few. And I don't think you understand what you said in your own post, the one to which I applied, which contained misunderstanding and factual errors about the nature of Buddhism and Hinduism. Nor do you understand the background necessary to properly evaluate the claims you are making, let alone the wherewithal to understand mine.

==

A. Regarding my first point, I'm right and you're wrong. Read you any scholarly book on the subject.

B. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the one who claimed that Buddhism was a form of Polytheistic Hinduism? If so, what you said is just false. Hindus think Atman (soul) is Brahman (unchanging, eternal, Being, roughly); Buddhists deny the existence of Brahman (all is changing, or becoming).

C. I clearly refute your claim that Buddhist believe in gods, taking the definition of 'God' to that as is defined by Traditional Theism as well as in various forms of "Hinduism" -- e.g., Bhakti, Vaishnava, Dvaita Vedanta, and you just shrug and say I'm splitting hairs? Surely, you can't be serious...

D. Splitting hairs about the difference between "venerating x" and "worshiping x"? I don't think so. I think there is a relevant distinction here. Venerate' (Latin, veneratio) means "to revere, to honor, to pay respect to." "Worship" (old english, worthiness, if I recall rightly) includes veneration, but also involves adoration, servitude, giving oneself over to God, strong emotions and love and sacrifice, and so much more.

Yes, one who worships God also venerates God. But one can venerate x without worshiping it. For instance, one can venerate but not worship the Flag of the US, say.

So yeah. You might want to think a bit more carefully before you go WARARARBLLING on stuff you don't really understand. Or not. This is fark. =p

Because we all know humans are good at heart.

Sick.

Sick of all the farkheads unable to open their eyes and see a bunch of unwashed, uneducated, fish-brained, power-hungry cavemen when they are in plain sight, sitting in their couch, drinking their beers and fondling their wives.
Sick of people always finding excuses.

"If they were civilized, they wouldn't react like that to something someone saidHUUUURRR HUUUUUUR"

Guess what, Sherlock, an angry dog is an angry dog, and if you go tickle his balls don't go with your right hand: its gonna take month to learn to write with the left one.

"But we can't say people are angry dogs that would be mean and not very politically correHHUUUUUR HUUUUUUR"

Because bashing on a whole religion is SO tolerant, right? But maybe there's a point here: since Humankind is so generous and benevolent, there should be something that make people go bad, right? Another excuse, right?
So go ahead, it's usually videogamesrockmusicdrugsalcoholbookstelevisionglobalwarmingobamabushsa ddamosama, but today their common denominator is religion, so their excuse is religion. CLEVER! GENIUS!

"But this is freedom of speech, we need to support people who say terrible things about rabid retards abroad, even if we don't agree with it we need to fight for the right to saHUUUUUUUR HUUUUUUUUUR"

Yeah! That's it and be humble! Freedom of speech is humility right? And expecting overexcited, overcompensating asshats in a war-ravaged country miles and miles away from yours to have the exact same laws and standards as yours, that's also humble right?

Guess what, my friends are Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Confucians, FFS there's even a 7th day advantist in the lot and we do meet, and we talk, and we have fun, and we never went to war against one another!
That's IS possible!
You know why?
Because each one of us, each and every single one of us believe in PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, and if one of us is being an asshat, it's their OWN PROBLEM, we don't go and march against society, God or Saturday Night Traffic, we go marching against the asshole!

But that's ok. Keep on talking against everything but the perpetrators, instigators, agitators, keep finding excuses for everything, until now it's been working reaaaaaally well, no reason to stop.

Damn.

"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy," the statement said. "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

spacelord321: Bhasayate: ciberido: frunjer: I wouldn't classify Buddhism as a religion. It is more a philosophy. Buddha was a teacher, not a deity. It is a part of Hinduism which is basically polytheistic. Not really sure which type of Buddhism Vietnamese follow, but it is certainly not like montheistic holier-than-thou type religions.

You are shocking ignorant of Buddhism and should go read a book or something.

If you're too busy (or lazy) to do that, then just Google "Tara" and "Buddhism" and spend five minutes reading.

Short answer: Buddhism absolutely is a religion.

Since shiat just got real ...

1st, "Hinduism" is a Western construct.

2nd, in "Hindu" terms, Buddhism is a Heterodox Darshana, as it does not accept the authority of the Vedas.

3rd, none of the 'gods' in Buddhism are exempt from conditioned existence; none of the 'divine beings' are eternal, unchangeable, all-powerful, etc. In a word, all are finite. Therefore, there are no gods in Buddhism, let alone a bunch of them.

4th Buddhists venerate higher beings, gods, Bodhisattva, etc, but they don't worship them: rather like Catholics venerate saints without worshiping them.

Surely it is the rioters that are humiliating the "prophet of Islam" by their behavior, much more than the original film that sparked it?

Bhasayate: A. Regarding my first point, I'm right and you're wrong. Read you any scholarly book on the subject.

My understanding of Buddhism, imperfect though it is, comes not so much from books (though I have read a few), but from living it. I lived on the Indian subcontinent for a few years and spent some of that time visiting monasteries and talking withe Buddhist monks and Hindu priests. I also used to be a Buddhist. I suspect, while you may possibly know a good deal about the academic study, you know precious little about the reality of how actual Buddhists live it. I could be wrong. Perhaps you'll regale us with tales of the years you spent living in a monastery in Bhutan.

It doesn't really matter, however. The best advice anyone could give anyone reading this thread would be to read a few books on the subject, or at least a Wikipedia article or two. I would advise against "any scholarly book on the subject," however, because a book about how real Buddhists live their lives would be of more value than some scholar's idealized version.

Even better would be to go to Asia and talk to some real, live Buddhists. But maybe you'd rather read books.

Bhasayate: B. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the one who claimed that Buddhism was a form of Polytheistic Hinduism?

One more, then I'm out:

1. "Hinduism" is a Western construct. Any scholarly book on the subject of "Religion in India" will make that point. This claim has nothing to do with the nature of Buddhism. One need not be a Buddhist or have lived or not lived in a monastery to know that.

2. OK, sorry I mixed you up with another Farker, thread moves fast. My apologies. But you did reply to the post I made to that other Farker in a way that was similar to the Farker I mixed you up with.

3. I don't think I'm wrong about what I said. If I were, why not reply to 2 and 3? What else was I wrong about? The post about the four noble truths and the 8 fold path?

4. My zafu may spent a long time in a monastery, but it doesn't brag about it, or use that as an a way to argue a point on Fark. =p

5. It seems you replied to my post not knowing the context of my original post and took issue with it not knowing who I was originally talking to. Happens on Fark. All the time. I replied, assuming that you knew what I said earlier. Again, another thing that people assume happens on Fark. That others actually read what we said above simply because we typed and such. Kind of silly if you think about it .. again, sorry for taking you to be this other person.

6. Sure, there's some Fark in my Fark post (I'm not taking this or myself all that seriously, despite the nature of my claims). Let's not take all of this too seriously. I don't think I've been a condescending prick. Just a case of cross talk is all.
